Oh, be still my pedant's tongue...

merlotgran Wed 20-May-15 22:23:25

I don't know about dead horses but the high ones make an awful racket when they're let lose in the yard.

Soutra Wed 20-May-15 22:20:10

A whole hour? I'm amazed it was still on Active Conversations then.
And your point is? confused

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 20-May-15 22:18:10

It had been quiet for nearly an hour before you put that up. grin

Soutra Wed 20-May-15 22:15:34

Has anybody been in touch with the RSPCA about the flogging being meted out to this dead horse?hmm

Anya Wed 20-May-15 21:15:40

I speak several languages and have read works of both Rabelais and Molière in French but I can't see earthy humour in Anya's declaration of intent.

loopylou Wed 20-May-15 17:51:57

What an incredible man Galen!
I can just about manage basic French and have been (unsuccessfully) trying to learn Italian.
DDIL speaks seven languages including Serbo-Croat and Russian, DS speaks three (French, Italian and German), but was always a natural mimic which I think helps. He learned German at University, DDIL taught him Italian and he self-taught French.
DD says she has absolutely no intention of trying any language other than English!

Soutra is that your bedtime reading?! I have heard of them but being the uneducated peasant that I must be I have never read any.

Anya Wed 20-May-15 14:38:42

Our posts crossed Galen he sounds like an amazing man indeed.

Bellanonna Wed 20-May-15 14:38:08

Ok. Thanks Anya

Anya Wed 20-May-15 14:35:56

Spam on GN tends to be when someone we've never heard of before suddenly posts a link to a site which they wish to promote. It's usually pretty blatant and easy to spot once you've seen it a few times.

Galen Wed 20-May-15 14:35:12

I did know a tribunal member who spoke Italian, Russian, French, German, Welsh and Spanish fluently. He read all the literature in the original languages. He was at Birmingham uni at the same time as me.
He had no arms or hands and was the most remarkable man I've ever known.
He was mayor of ? Honiton for many years.
You can google him, his name's Frank Letch.

Oh don't mind me. I can't count, so may have got the stars wrong? Tosser not that bad so can't see need for blanks. Maybe someone's name ? Hope someone knows...

Anya Wed 20-May-15 14:20:04

Can't work out what t****er is either, esoteric or otherwise. Had thought it might be tosser, but that's only 3 stars.

Bellanonna Wed 20-May-15 14:03:43

I'm newish here and have clearly led a sheltered life. Plus I'm endowed with a modicum of naïveté. I know what spam is on my p.c. and it usually makes its way to the spam inbox, where I don't see it. Stuff from advertisers mainly, offers of Viagra, though I now just delete them all. But what is spam on gransnet? I haven't been around long enough to discern what might be spam as opposed to genuine contributions. some names appear regularly and the OPs clearly know one another. Would spam be from an unknown poster? But everyone has to register with GN so can't his/her origin be traced by GN? I also saw somewhere else an esoteric reference to t****er. The poster clearly didn't want to spell it out. Is that the same thing as a spammer? I am being totally genuine here, and would appreciate some clarification. Sorry if I appear stupid! blush

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 20-May-15 13:57:03

Flip me! I'm not talking to you anymore Anya. You're too posh.

Soutra. You're funny. smile

Soutra Wed 20-May-15 13:55:21

hmm hmm?

Soutra Wed 20-May-15 13:54:03

Doesn't everyone read Moliere/Solzhenitsyn/Kafka /Plato or Tacitus in the original?

Anya Wed 20-May-15 13:45:35

Oops! I'll just have to resort to bawdy, blunt and un-becoming language to redeem myself then Ana wink
