What an incredible man Galen! I can just about manage basic French and have been (unsuccessfully) trying to learn Italian. DDIL speaks seven languages including Serbo-Croat and Russian, DS speaks three (French, Italian and German), but was always a natural mimic which I think helps. He learned German at University, DDIL taught him Italian and he self-taught French. DD says she has absolutely no intention of trying any language other than English!
Spam on GN tends to be when someone we've never heard of before suddenly posts a link to a site which they wish to promote. It's usually pretty blatant and easy to spot once you've seen it a few times.
I did know a tribunal member who spoke Italian, Russian, French, German, Welsh and Spanish fluently. He read all the literature in the original languages. He was at Birmingham uni at the same time as me. He had no arms or hands and was the most remarkable man I've ever known. He was mayor of ? Honiton for many years. You can google him, his name's Frank Letch.
Oh don't mind me. I can't count, so may have got the stars wrong? Tosser not that bad so can't see need for blanks. Maybe someone's name ? Hope someone knows...
I'm newish here and have clearly led a sheltered life. Plus I'm endowed with a modicum of naïveté. I know what spam is on my p.c. and it usually makes its way to the spam inbox, where I don't see it. Stuff from advertisers mainly, offers of Viagra, though I now just delete them all. But what is spam on gransnet? I haven't been around long enough to discern what might be spam as opposed to genuine contributions. some names appear regularly and the OPs clearly know one another. Would spam be from an unknown poster? But everyone has to register with GN so can't his/her origin be traced by GN? I also saw somewhere else an esoteric reference to t****er. The poster clearly didn't want to spell it out. Is that the same thing as a spammer? I am being totally genuine here, and would appreciate some clarification. Sorry if I appear stupid!
