When I opened Gransnet a few minutes ago, there was an ad on the right-hand side for business loans. Not only was it visible, it was also AUDIBLE. Some female person babbled on at me about how wonderful their business loans are. I have never ever shown any interest in business loans.
I followed an arrow at the top right of it and found myself on a page where I was informed that I had received this ad because I was being sent ads that related to my interests!
However, I could choose which advertisers from a long list to block. This would mean, it said, that I would still receive ads but they would not be targetted. This is the page where I could do that choosing - www.ghostery.com/en/support/global-opt-out/ Some of them can be blocked by "select all" on that page, some need more steps, I am working through those one by one.
The choices were not specific sellers, but ads from agencies like double-click and so on, who place ads for many companies. With any luck, this will block a lot of the rubbish that infests my laptop.
I shall keep an eye open for future ads and see if my ticks are working. I have added the link for others to use. Fingers crossed.

I downloaded AdBlockPlus and have no problem with any ads on any site I visit - very good for the BP! 
(Prior to that I did all that 'choosing' but it was never-ending...)
If you do try AdBlockPlus, make sure you 'enable' it before cursing it as a useless waste of time like I did!
