I think my cookies have gone wrong

I've been getting an advert on Gransnet for a couple of weeks now, about 'mycotoxin management'. When I click on it it says, "Animal feeds are your business and it's ours too". confused No it isn't! I haven't even got a goldfish!

I'm so fed up with it. It's not even a pretty ad. It's orange and black. Someone make it go away. Pleeease.

At last I have got rid of the mycotoxin ads! I followed the arrow at the top right of the ad, which took me to a Google Adchoices page. There I could select some companies to opt out of. That mycotoxin ad was placed by the advertising firm Double-click. When I opted out of Double-click I stopped getting ads placed by them.

In place of the mycotoxins was now an ad for euromillions, placed by Infectious Media (I don't think I want to catch whatever they are infected with) .

I followed the "Adchoices" link at the right-hand end of that, which took me to info.evidon.co.uk/more_info/17649 From there I could select "opt out of more companies" - that produced a list of several hundred online advertising companies, about half of which had a box where I could opt out of them there and then, and the other half had a link to their website, where I could opt out separately.

I did the box ones, so that is half of them excluded.

It said on the evidon opt-out page - "You can opt out of any or all of the companies listed below. If you opt out, you will still see ads online, and in some cases data may be collected about your browsing activity, but companies will not use this information to select the ads you see online. For detailed information on how each company uses your data, including their opt-out policies, click on the company name below. "

This Google support page tells you more about how to opt out and what that can and can't achieve. - support.google.com/ads/answer/2662922?hl=en-GB

The ads on the mobile site are at the bottom of the page, under the typing box.
My current one is Bookfest.

I am so sorry!!!

Elegran Fri 29-Apr-16 10:17:36

I am now getting nothing but the farm mycotoxins! On a loop!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 29-Apr-16 10:04:21

I've got Lidl!!! Hooray!

Shame I haven't got a Lidl near me. Sigh.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 29-Apr-16 09:55:46

Big Brother is watching you!

I have never searched for anything farm-ish though. It's a complete mystery.

I did stay on a farm last week. How could they know that though?! shock

Good point about the Phoenix thread. grin

Elegran Fri 29-Apr-16 09:39:22

Just wondering what ads we will be shown after the recent thread started by Phoenix ?

Elegran Fri 29-Apr-16 09:37:41

Since following your link for a look, jings I am getting that ad in the top panel too. That is how Google ad-choices work - they automatically note key words in your searches and send ads that refer to them to the ad spaces on websites. Website designers can put in an ad space and sign up for Google to fill them in. I think the web-owner gets a minute fragment of a penny each time someone clicks on one. It is like taking out a paid ad in a magazine, except that the firm advertising just gets a short turn in the space provided.

Hello Kat. smile It is on the right and along the top. Don't worry about it though. It's more puzzling than anything. Totally wasted on me! grin (I should have put this under Chat. Soz)

Hi jingl, where's the ad? We only have ads on the top banner or on the right-hand side. Most of the time the ads are run by Google AdChoices, not us, and they tend to display ads they think you may be interested in...You can adjust your preferences by clicking on the little arrow when you hover over the ad.

Elegran Thu 28-Apr-16 18:52:26

Had you perhaps been looking at a wildlife site which has the words "animals" and "protection" on it? That is all it takes for google ads to think that you are interested in anything that has those two words on its first page.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 28-Apr-16 18:24:50

I suppose it's a mistake to keep clicking on it, but it's got this awful fascination....!

ninathenana Thu 28-Apr-16 18:20:43

I won't share the loveliness thanks jings I don't want it popping up on my page grin
I've got enough trouble with the Amazon add after I ordered GS birthday pressie on Tuesday sad

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 28-Apr-16 18:09:43

Yeah right! hmm grin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 28-Apr-16 18:09:04

It's just this one that's annoying. Because I am not a farmer. I thought they were selected through 'cookies'. Just mystified really.

Crafting Thu 28-Apr-16 18:08:08

I was going to say send them to me jings. I'll eat anything, ....not sure about the animal feed though hmm

Ana Thu 28-Apr-16 18:06:45

I'm sure you've complained about them in the past, jingl. But perhaps my memory's going...hmm

Indinana Thu 28-Apr-16 18:04:19

Oh those cookies. I was all ready to give you some baking advice grin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 28-Apr-16 18:03:10

I don't want Adblock. I quite like adverts. Nice ones.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 28-Apr-16 18:02:28

Share in its loveliness

Ana Thu 28-Apr-16 18:01:26

Adblock

Ana Thu 28-Apr-16 18:01:05

Install Adbock Plus. I did and got rid of all those irritating ads on here and on other sites.
