I think merlot has explained her aim quite well in her 1500hrs post, soop. It was not the litchen she was objecting to but the way one or two posters use it.

The real point has been made by several posters: there should be room on GN for quiet 'rooms' like the kitchen, noisy rumbustious rooms like the political threads, and rooms where sharp retorts are made by posters who feel really upset about happenings in places like Aleppo.

Surely there is room on GN for all types of thread, quiet ones like the Kitchen where one can relax, humorous ones and more serious and often excitable threads such as the political ones. I dip in and out of most, although I tend to steer clear of political and religious ones as I am not well enough informed to debate sensibly.

Having done some stuff that needed doing I have glanced again at this thread and think I'll beat a hasty retreat and look at some political threads for a bit of light relief!

Soop, bags is right when she says I wrote my post carefully. I was trying to put across that the ethos of the kitchen is sometimes abused by posters who are only too happy to discuss other threads in a back slapping way even though this is frowned upon by HQ sometimes to the point of threads being deleted.

The kitchen is not the place for any of us to wade in to defend the contents of another thread. We respect its values but it doesn't always cut both ways.

soop, I don't get it either. If people want to retreat somewhere to link their wounds, the kitchen is a place for them. No one needs to follow them to see what they are saying about other threads. for you.

It may not be a criticism of the "Kitchen" itself, although it is described as divisive but it is a fairly damning indictment of some of the people who post regularly there.
Phrases such as "crafty enough to slip the halo back in place" or "nasty vitriolic stuff" can only be read one way, and "a good old flounce with another username in the back of the wardrobe" omits to mention that if a member leaves because of snide criticism by other named or unnamed persons, they are obliged by GN to change their username
So, yes I have read it carefully and if it is designed to be a valedictory salvo before this contentious thread bites the dust it has probably achieved its aim.
Speaking as someone who left GN because of one snide and cutting remark too far and returned with another username (as obliged to) perhaps I am one of the targets, but I make no apology for changing my username as there is no alternative. How often does that have to be explained?

Well, I have to say this......when anyone starts criticising Soops Kitchen, it's a poor bloody show. It is a place of refuge, happy and sad chat and supportive with it.

merlotgran The forums on Gransnet are many and varied. Sadly, I am not gifted, as are many, with the ability to debate serious issues. All that I have attempted to do is talk about daily ups and downs with any Gransnetter who enjoys uncomplicated banter. I do not pretend to be anything other than pleasant and courteous. It is not in my nature to invite or participate in confrontation. I am perfectly happy in my simple-minded way. All I ask is that every member of Gransnet enjoys whatever forum they choose to comment on.

I too have fallen out with Jing occasionally, but she doesn't bear grudges and is a great person to have on GN, I would love to see her back. Without characters like Jings, GN would be a beige place.

Just to change the subject before the thread reaches its natural end, I've solved the PM mystery.
