Student research requests

The information about how and where to post surveys is clearly provided on Gransnet. I would expect any PhD student to have the intelligence and common sense to find all these things out and fulfill the appropriate preliminaries before posting anything like that on GN.

That generally they do not is symptomatic. As an ex-questionnaire designer I have found that many of the surveys students post are of very poor quality and the information they will provide is suspect. Nevertheless they will still use this poor data to reach very dubious results.

I am all for helping students and when I was working the nature of my work meant that I was often approached by students wanting help, which I gave very willingly, including help with questionnaire design, providing they had done their homework first and thought about it carefully. Queries of the 'Please send me all the information you have on the market for central heating in the UK' ended up in the bin.

BlueBelle GNHQ are running a business- hence the charge but I agree, maybe they could look at their prices.

I get student requests for help re: my campaigns and I'm always pleased to help. I don't get paid but hopefully my replies will raise awareness. I agree with BlueBelle's comment. I have to admit I don't always follow rules [as long as no harm is being done of course]. If you don't try, you don't get!!!!

Why leave being polite to student requests only to those who run the site?

Rules can be followed in a friendlier way

Baggs by 'vet' I meant fill in the online form that pops up when the student clicks onto the appropriate forum - there are some questions on there which I assume is a form of vetting.

Riverwalk I was the one who reported that particular site.

GNHQ I know always send a friendly email to a student who may have wandered on to our site thinking that all requests are free.

I agree, Media could afford much more and students could use our wisdom for free.

Surely all this kind of thing is better left to those who run the site.

I don't think Gransnet has the resources to vet students.

I didn't see the original post but as someone who completed a research project as a very mature student with the help of a wide range of people accessed face to face and remotely I understand the difficult in accessing appropriate sources. I agree, media can afford much, much more than the average student of whatever age and a more obvious link to the process would be helpful. Be interested in your response.

The researcher did seem genuine and I think he/she could have been informed in a friendlier & politer manner that you have to go through GNHQ and pay a fee.

It's not always obvious when you go on a new site what the rules are.

I once tried online Bridge thinking I was playing against robots, when someone piped-up 'why are you so slow?' I had somehow blundered into a proper match with three humans! I said I'm a beginner and sorry for my error - they were very nice as they bade me farewell and in the direction of the robotic section.
