An edit option could be helpful

Ha, the only time I saw an edit button used on here was when one of the Admin changed their own post just after I’d replied to it. Left me looking completely deranged. grin

I don’t think I follow you. You can send emoticons in PMs. You don’t have the option to include photos, which, as N&G said, would be nice. I realise that you can see everything in the text box that you can see in a preview, but if I post a long message, it’s irritating having to scroll back and forth trying to edit or correct text, and I can see no reason why the preview facility should not be made available.

Understand your point - I just triggerred PM to see the layout and cancelled as I didn't want to send a message. You can only send text, no special options like emoticons so a preview option really would not help as the text box you type into shows everything you would see if you had a preview option. Perhaps PM's should allow these other features when a preview would be needed.

With all due respect, I don’t want to “review them ad nauseum” and copy and paste them when a simple review button such as we have with thread posts would serve the same purpose and be less ponderous.

"Greyduster" I don't think you need the edit feature on PM's simply because they can be drafted at leisure in a word processor , saved, reviewed ad nauseam and pasted into your PM text when you are ready. Once an email or PM is sent that is it and you cannot take it back in any forum.

I did get an email this morning from Buzz50 saying there was a PM for me but when I tried to find it the sender or Buzz50 had deleted it!

Can we start a petition? Perhaps if enough Gransnetters sign it, the powers-that-be would relent! grin

I agree with others that other forums allow this without any obvious problems arising from it.

Good thought n&g. Would appreciate that ability too.

It would be useful to be able attach or add photos in pms though ?

Why do so many forums work perfectly well with an edit button Lucy I can’t think of one that doesn’t have one and I go on quite a few Some have the five minute rule which is fine
Preview is not enough as Cinders said you don’t always note the texts have been changed for you, also I often think of things just after I ve pressed the submit button then have to write a second one which looks like you’re hogging the thread

Why do we have a preview button on thread posts but not in the private message option? There is the same requirement for it, I would have thought.

Afternoon! nina is right I'm afraid; we don't have any plans to add an edit button at the moment as it has the potential to create very disjointed threads, with information missing etc.

We do encourage use of the preview option instead, and if you need to withdraw a post you can always report it to us and we'll gladly do the honours.

The problem is essentially that when you type something and read it back even with a preview you tend to read what you thought you wrote. It is only when you look at it hours later that the glaring errors hit you in the face. Then you are powerless the fix them.

If you take a while writing a post some one else may have typed something that makes your carefully constructed offering out of context. So you can't dilly dally too much.

GHQ are aware of our feelings on this and it has been referred to many times. Some say you should use the preview option but I agree 'edit' would be quicker and simpler.

I have never been on a forum except this one where you cannot edit your own pos, its the most annoying thing about this one Even if you were just allowed a 5 minute window it would be so useful Its like we are kids that can’t be trusted to edit our own work and have to go to HQ for everything to be done for you

This is a tricky one, many of us make mistakes typing and some forums allow you to change or even delete your own posts. The downside of this is that follow on posts can appear out of context.

Gransnet admin will delete posts or even threads if you have a good reason.
