Profiles

Last night I set out to delete my profile, but found that I could not bring myself to do it. It was the deleting the photos of the DGC which I could not face. I have compromised by leaving the full profile but making it Private meantime and will revisit the issue at a later date.

I was blue until last year.

I changed because I don't mind sharing my info with fellow posters but not with the Daily mail !!

I've been on Gransnet since 2012 and have left my profile on. I can understand why many people have removed their profiles, particularly as Gransnetters' comments have ended up on Facebook and in the newspapers.

However, I very rarely post about anything very personally sensitive relating to me or my family. I don't mind being open about my political leanings and opinions on various issues.

I feel that when someone is open about who they are, there is less likelihood of them being "professional" contributors whose job is to infiltrate sites and influence opinion, or trolls who just want to stir up trouble (although I suppose personal details could be made up).

Well the difference is on fb you chose what you want friends to see but here everyone sees it

I think there are implications of being on any social media site, profile or not. This site is accessible to all and it would not be impossible to profile members, who have posted on various subjects, ie personal preferences, views and even political stance, and although individuals are known only by username perhaps not impossible to identify them. It's good to be aware of it.

I had a blue profile until another member (who has since left) threatened to involve herself in a real life situation of mine.

Granny23 your profile is easily identifiable as it is full of photos of you and your family Up to you but I wouldn’t want all that on a public profile

I was blue until last year when we had a long thread about our posts going on FB and the Daily Fail and I then chose to remove all info about myself

Alima it was last year that I removed my profile for that reason and I have not regretted it. I did not put a photo on it but I could have been traced if anybody had bothered.

I was aware you could have a profile but I've never been happy to give out too much personal information. I hadn't even noticed that some posters were blue...!!

Gillybob Now I'm wondering if I should do the same?

I’m still blue but I’ve recently removed the details of my profile . As someone who chooses not to have FB presence I was disappointed to learn that GN puts various threads on FB .

Two or three years ago the “profiles” were down. Must have been quite popular to have one then, soon a thread was started and many Gnetters put info and even photos on that. (I didn’t, don’t want to scare the horses!). Fast forward to within the last year and there was uproar caused about Gnetters posts being on Face Book. Posters rightly felt threatened, too much info being given out willy-nilly and possibly IDs becoming known. Consequently many people took down their profiles and some changed names. Shame, but that’s how it is.

G23 You may be right about the security aspect as things have changed such a lot over the years since we joined in 2011.
A lot of people who joined then have now gone "blue" maybe they don't want to take the chance of being "outed" by members of their family and friends and depending on the topic it could cause problems don't you think.

As a newbie to the site I am aware of this profile corner, but I think first and foremost I like to feel totally comfortable and "at home" before giving out information about myself,probably already have said far too much!!!
But at some point undoubtedly I shall fill in all the blanks.
