This year, as we have done previously, we're asking gransnetters to nominate a political figure for these awards. Your shortlist will be discussed by the judges (led by Esther Rantzen) and a winner announced at a ceremony early next year.

Last year our winner was Joan Bakewell. In 2014, Ann Clwyd, Harriet Harman in 2015, and Baroness Sally Greengross in 2016.

This year, once again, we would love to receive your nominations. They absolutely don't have to be an MP - they can be involved in politics at any level.

The awards scheme - run by leading retirement developer, Churchill Retirement Living - is designed to honour the work of the UK’s over 65s and celebrates the significant role older people have to play in British society.

You can nominate anyone you like who has made a significant contribution in the political field. The two criteria to bear in mind are:

- Nominees must be 65 or over
- The awards recognise specific achievements made by individuals in the last 12 months

Looking forward to your nominations and suggestions - many thanks

David Attenborough for services to the environment. He campaigns and the whole subject is dependent on politics. Politicians in power decide things that are good or bad for animal survival, food availability and land use.

I agree about Sir David Attenborough. His promotion of the beauty of the natural world and what we humans are doing to destroy it is so very powerful. Just because he is a politician doesn't mean he's not a powerful and effective campaigner. I hope that it has started to make a difference so my nomination is for him

I am going to put forward Margaret Hodge. Still an active politician at 74. I respect her enormously for calling out the anti semitism in the Labour party and for refusing to have it swept under the carpet or brushed aside.

Eric Pickles I believe now Baron Pickles. I realise his work around the Rotherham child sex scandals was not in the last year and he stood down as an MP in 2017 but he continues to do lots of important work around the holocaust and was made a life peer in 2018. H e is also chair of the parliamentary review

Margaret Hodge for her fight against anti semitism in the Labour Party and refusing to be silent when threatened

I'd support Margaret Hodge too.

Yes me too for Margaret Hodge
