Troll hunting

(235 Posts)

I have been told off for troll hunting to which I hold my hands up- though I wasn't hunting, I'd found one!!

Shouldn't GNHQ be troll hunting for us. Those of us that have been here a while will be instinctively aware of malicious posters generally and can report (as I was told to) but how long does it take hq to look into something and what harm can be done to unsuspecting members in the interim?

BlueBelle Sun 23-Dec-18 09:40:40

I m more confused than ever by Holdings post ?‍♀️

apart from me of course arrogant or what

Who are you Holding ? Are you now proposing that a regular poster is a troll ...divide and rule eh

Sorry but I find most of your posts quite nasty

Anja Sun 23-Dec-18 09:42:26

RachellaGransnet yes you did delete a thread I reported within an hour. Another, much more obvious one, was still running last time I looked.

kittylester Sun 23-Dec-18 10:04:02

I'm not sure Rachella that you've actually got the point though.

Yes maw I do remember that poster and, just the other day, when a new poster asked if she should take notes on GN members, as an aide-memoire, I advised against it. When I mentioned our previous experience of a poster "keeping notes" others agreed that it could be unwise to do that.
The ex-poster who was banned was mentioned then and I think some unpleasant memories were stirred!

mcem Sun 23-Dec-18 10:48:51

Ps the thread was "Getting to know you" but I was not accusing the op of any underhand intentions!

holdingontometeeth Sun 23-Dec-18 11:00:19

Dear me, that was tongue in cheek but again you are only looking for negatives.
You all refer to what I have tried to investigate and now I am being described as a weirdo!
At least I tried to see a link with certain posts and identify someone who is really taking the p**s.
Anyway, that's me finished with posting on the Threads, I will continue on the word games where there's no subterfuge and leave you all too it, though I may post on my Diabetes banished Thread if I have any further comments or info to add.
Whilst looking at past threads I noticed that I had posted over ten months ago so I am not quite the newbie that I thought I was.
I also said in my last post that you cant be sure if I am part of what I have discovered.
That was just to show you that you cant be sure of anything on here, and I am accused of intentionally causing confusion.
Well I thought you were already confused in your efforts to identify insincere posters.

Elegran Sun 23-Dec-18 11:46:18

It is a very confusing field, holding and trying to find anything solid in it is like searching for a needle in a haystack while wearing a blindfold. The clearest evidence that you have found something is the pain as the needle stabs your finger., and you can't even be sure that is not from some innocent sewing needle annoyed at being accused of being a hypodermic.

Meanwhile mass murderers have been known to protest their innocence loud and long and tearfully. The hunt makes the hunters suspect everyone, so don't blame them for being cautious about you - you said yourself they ought to be.

In the assumption of your being "with the good guys", enjoy the games threads, and watch out for card sharps. Cheating b*****s get everywhere!

I havent posted for a long time (various reasons!) but have lurked around. This thread has just about finished me! I dont agree with holding at all if fact I think there is something rather creepy about "his" posts but now I feel a little uncomfortable about GN as a whole, even though I have had some great support and (hopefully) made some good virtual friends.
The thought of someone "doing research" about posters and compiling "evidence" is not pleasant! I think its time to say goodbye GN.

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 12:59:55

I couldn't care less if someone wants to compile a dossier on me.
Old, grey, fat, boring.
That just about sums up the facts about me.

BlueBelle Sun 23-Dec-18 13:06:29

They won’t find much of interest on me either MissA, mores the shame
I certainly wouldn’t think you need worry Hazbeen and the very worst just don’t write anything too personal Don’t let it unnerve you into leaving it’s a great place to chat, debate and have a laugh, some of the posters are so quick witted I often have a giggle No man (if Holding is a man I m not too sure myself on that one) will send me off in a flux

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 13:07:28

So you're not about to flux off?

BlueBelle Sun 23-Dec-18 13:12:04

Nah, I m not fluxing, it’s a non flux day today

HAZBEEN Sun 23-Dec-18 13:18:10

I see holding's behaviour in "researching posters" as a form of stalking. I know that may seem as an overreaction to some but not to some people. I normally take a lot of the comments etc in my stride but this hit a nerve so to speak. I feel his comments about other members distasteful at best and down right creepy if honest.

janeainsworth Sun 23-Dec-18 13:26:28

Hazbeen don’t go. I very much doubt holding’s ability to research posters’ backgrounds etc since personally I’ve always found the Gransnet search facility pathetic ?
I think holding sounds creepy too.
But Gransnet is a public forum - anyone out there can try to do what he claims to have done.
Just be careful what you post - a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself how you would feel if your post was read out in court.
That may sound dramatic but it does serve to rein in high feelings. smile

Marydoll Sun 23-Dec-18 14:30:40

Hazbeen, please don't go !
Dont let one poster put ypu off!

Jane10 Sun 23-Dec-18 15:03:32

Do we not all have some sort of memory of what other GNers are like or may have posted before? We don't actually formally collect this info but I remember eg if someone's DH is ill, who's due a new DGC, who's wondering about living somewhere etc etc. Never formally collated just there in the back of one's mind as one reads threads and posts. I know which Grans may be of like mind to me or who I often argue with etc etc.

oldbatty Sun 23-Dec-18 15:47:55

Miss A , I feel now be the time to reveal my not very secretive dossier on you.

Ah yes, here we have it,interesting ,feisty, articulate, kind and funny.

kittylester Sun 23-Dec-18 15:48:08

Maybe hotmt is just Father Christmas - making a list, checking it twice......

Chewbacca Sun 23-Dec-18 15:50:06

You think kitty? Hmmmm...... hmm

mcem Sun 23-Dec-18 16:37:49

Missadventure although I 'm too lazy not inclined to compile dossiers I do have an image of you! About my height (5'5") /slim (12-14)/ short neat hair /fairly determined and feisty/ quickwitted and with a good SoH/ a sympathetic, interesting and interested poster!!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 23-Dec-18 16:41:29

Miss Adventure look forward to meeting you in a certain "hostelry" close to us ??

oldbatty Sun 23-Dec-18 16:48:12

Do I need a funny handshake to get in?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 23-Dec-18 17:07:22

Oldbatty I am sure we would recognise you ?

oldbatty Sun 23-Dec-18 17:53:21

I may appear in a different guise.
