Managing your cookie preferences on Gransnet

I have to click on "I accept" every time I open Gransnet.

On all devices.

The first time this happened, I looked at the list of things and the default seemed to be "Off" for all of the names listed.

I'm with yggdrasil on this.
Are we expected to trawl through the ridiculously endless lists (which don't really explain in simple language whether those companies sell on our info to yet more 3rd parties...or not)
I get unbelievably annoyed at the constant blocks of data protection and cookie blurb with which we are bombarded umpteen times a day.
On the phone or online...It's wasting hours of our time to listen to the data blurb and then options within options then requests to stay on the line after the call or texts asking for feedback. Every blooming company, every blooming day. angryangry

As if you haven't got enough to do.....hmm

Sorry again.

Gonegirl Thu 14-Mar-19 14:47:37

I am so sorry. It was totally my fault. blush

Sorry, Gonegirl. Realised we didn't answer your query. Can you email us on contactus with your browser and device and we'll take a closer look? Thanks smile

I'm with yygdrasil - privacy levels set as high as possible on all social media sites, ad blocker running.

I too ignore any site that makes my access difficult - accept my terms or I'll go elsewhere. And do on many occasions now.

Don't you just love (not) those (not GN) who trill at you "Your Privacy is important to us". No it isn't, your attempts to harvest my data are what's important to you!!

Hello, so sorry about the issues some of you have had posting. It was an unrelated improvement <ahem> that happened at the same time as the cookies preference update. smile All sorted now so everything should all be working fine again. Do let us know if not though.

Gonegirl Thu 14-Mar-19 10:47:51

When I click on the Black Dog Gang thread it whizzes down the page and finishes up on 27th - 28th December. Every time.

We're trying to get to the bottom of the issues. Hopefully some of the problems from yesterday will have been sorted by now but if there is anything ongoing, please post here (or email us at contactus) with as much detail as possible. Your browser (Chrome/Firefox etc), if you are accessing it via a laptop/tablet or mobile and if you are using an adblocker.

Thanks for all of your comments and apologies for any inconvenience this is causing. Our tech team are looking into this right now and we'll come back to you soon with an update.

If you delete cookies regularly you should not have a problem surely?

I have had a terrible time trying to post for over an hour on the Good Morning thread, after setting my preferences.
I had to keep logging in each time, what a pain.

It won't even let me post this comment!!

Anja Thu 14-Mar-19 08:51:21

I’m not sure if I will stay on a site which doesn’t give me control of my preferences.

megan123 Thu 14-Mar-19 08:28:55

I have an ad blocker also. Won't let me post on some threads. Hopeless!

yggdrasil Thu 14-Mar-19 08:06:57

There are a great many sites now that won't let you see what they have unless you agree to them having access to your data. I just go somewhere else for my information. I nearly did the same with Gransnet. I have all my privacy levels set as hard as I can with social media sites, and I also run an ad blocker. Which I have no intention of switching off. (It is so good I even pay for it)

Ginny42 Wed 13-Mar-19 21:38:39

But there was no way to get that information until you'd completed what Elegran has described. I almost abandoned GN, as the list of companies is massive and if I'd made the wrong choice I suspect I would have been inundated with what I regard as Spam. I don't want anyone deciding 'what might interest me' and I never click on ads.

Elegran Wed 13-Mar-19 17:15:34

Bump. Note to EVERYONE. This is not a geeky technical message, it is a simple way for you to choose what you see onscreen. When you get the opportunity to do this, DO IT You can choose whether your reactions, clicks on ads etc will be recorded and used to "bring you what interests you", whether to be shown ads about things on which you have commented, and so on.

Some things are "required" - you won't see anything of GN without them - some could be on or off and the choice is yours. The default if you do nothing is "ON" and you have to set them to "OFF" yourself to prevent them being operative.

This is your chance to choose.

Thanks for letting us know this, Lara I may have to read it again when the crunch comes.

I am willing to bet, also, that you will need to repeat the post a few times!

Hi gransnetters

A quick heads up that, starting today, we're trialling some tech that will enable users to manage their cookie preferences (sadly, not the choc-chip variety). This approach is considered best practice: giving people more control, and aligning with GDPR and the recently updated Data Protection Act.

We have tried to make it not too annoying, but apologies in advance for any interruption to your browsing -- as ever, it's a balancing act.

Here's how it should work:
1. The first time you visit a Gransnet page you should see a pop up along the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, by clicking ‘I Agree’, or you can manage your individual preferences by clicking ‘show purposes’.
2. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page and in your account settings you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.

We have already launched this on our sister site Mumsnet, and there have been a few known issues with ad blockers and Firefox. This is because ad blockers prevent the consent management system from being able to record your preferences. In this instance, the easiest solution is to exclude your ad blocker from running on the Gransnet site, otherwise you may need to contact your ad blocker directly to find out if they have a work around for this. In addition, we are also aware that Firefox has integrated ad blocking features which similarly prevent the system from being able to record your preferences. In this instance, we have found that by adding Gransnet to its own 'container' and the instructions to do that are here addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Thanks for reading this far! Any issues please let us know.
