New members- acronyms/abbreviatio ns question

That's a good idea Farmor. I feel sorry for new posters, who are obviously a bit lost, and receive less than welcoming responses to their request for help!

Not everyone is fully IT competent and it takes time for them to find their way around the site. It probably took courage for some of them to even post on a thread!

I agree that sometimes new members do get a bit of stick for 'not seeing' the heading at the top of the page and sadly, sometimes they could feel hurt as 'they only asked'
I am sure members don't mean to upset them but it depends on how the reader takes it.
My irritation is the D before everything! D could stand for 'darling' 'despicable' or many other adjectives beginning with D so is it really necessary?
Surely D1 for eldest daughter etc. is enough and would cause less confusion?
Just a thought!

Every now and then, in the middle of a thread, a poster (presumably new) asks about the common abbreviations used DD, DS etc. Usually someone enlightens them, but others get a bit irritated that they haven’t seen the heading at top of page. I wonder could GNHQ send a welcome email to new members with a list of the abbreviations or direct them to list?
Those familiar with this type of forum don’t have a problem but Gransnet seems to get some members who haven’t used one before.
