The Decline and Fall of GN?

(111 Posts)

There used to be on GN some very funny if sometimes a bit ascerbic posters. Most of them seem to have gone. In fact it seems that any controversial and slightly contentious post or thread is wiped by GNHQ. The future seems to be pleasant nice postings (which are fine if you need support) or playing games. It seems that GN like the rest of society only accepts boring old farts. If you comment please don't mention other threads or this will be deleted (That ruling suppresses any complaining doesn't it!!!)

But some things are not for discussion no matter how civil we are!!

rosecarmel Wed 28-Aug-19 17:37:59

And what? smile

Gonegirl Wed 28-Aug-19 17:34:32

Not wishing to make this a thread about a thread, obviously.

No doubt Hawkeye HQ are watching.

Gonegirl Wed 28-Aug-19 17:33:09

Civilly? Yes. I would agree with that. And?

rosecarmel Wed 28-Aug-19 17:29:23

All our lives we are expected to behave particular ways in different situations and settings-

Anthony Horowitz surely has his plate full of his own expectations, initiatives to influence how and what people think not to mention most definitely has a list of what he would allow or prevent to occur under his own roof-

What's happening on college campuses is extreme and complicating an existing, systemic problem- Not solving it-

Here, members aren't restricted from discussing any subject- They are free to discuss anything - Civilly -

Spot on? Not just universities. I remember some of the comments on GN when there was talk of bringing back Spitting Image ?
I suppose it's as simple as: you either get satire, or you don't.

TerriBull Wed 28-Aug-19 17:04:34

I'm reading a book by Anthony Horowitz and this paragraph seemed very apt, parts of it could well apply to this thread.

"There are some people who argue that we are too sensitive these days, that because we're so afraid of causing offence, we no longer engage in any serious sort of argument at all. But that's how it is. It's why political chat-shows on television have become so boring. There are narrow lines between which all public conversations have to take place and even a single poorly chosen word can bring all sorts of trouble down on your head". (as it seems to have done for GG's tongue in cheek thread)

People are going to disappear up their own exhaust pipes if they continue become so offended at every innocuous comment. If we carry on like this debate will become obsolete. Just look what's happening on university campuses hmm

NanaandGrampy Add to your list 'expletives' part and parcel of twenty first century language .

Lessismore Wed 28-Aug-19 17:02:40

Minnie, no sorry, I don't?

Did you misplace an apostrophe?

rosecarmel Wed 28-Aug-19 16:53:25

Much of what get discussed on this site are first world frustrations- Considerably more of those than game threads overall- More pressing issues receive greater activity- Usually-

Moderation on this forum is thoughtful and light-handed yet protective- But not overly protective- Plenty of latitude offered up for banter and fun-

Complainers are too ignorant and conditioned to recognize abuse, homophobia and prejudice- Being called out on such wrecks "their" idea of fun, and by fun I mean reinforcing each other's mental health issues-

Judy54 Wed 28-Aug-19 16:24:47

Surely the golden rule is to always be polite and don't say anything on here that we would not be prepared to say face to face. Humour and wit are fine, downright rudeness is totally unacceptable.

sodapop Wed 28-Aug-19 16:13:18

gringrin Annodomini love your bland leading the bland comment.

I agree Riverwalk seems its ok to make 'racist' comments about one country but not another - strange.

GN is definitely more boring now, too many games and sponsored discussions. Good to see a bit of spirit Gonegirl.

trisher Wed 28-Aug-19 15:41:55

I can'thelp it whenever racism and the British are discussed the Flanders and Swann song starts to run through my brain. It is probably terribly un-PC, but it is funny and it does show that by being funny about something you show how ridiculous it is "A Song of Patriotic Prejudice" (or "the Engllish are best"

I'm a bit of a ditherer when I post and it takes me ages to type stuff. Yesterday I typed a lovely post to Gonegirl's thread and by the time I'd hit "send", the thread had vanished! When I look at the stuff that gets posted on Mumsnet, it's far more controversial and combative than anything that gets through on here. Double standards? Are grannies only supposed to discuss knitting patterns and potting up hydrangeas? hmm

MissAdventure Wed 28-Aug-19 15:00:23

There isn't any excuse for 'speaking' to anyone like that.
It's perfectly possible to think someone is wrong without being damn rude about it.

I have seen a few posters say that they have been put off posting due to others behaviour.

I'm sure that doesn't help the site.

Squiffy Wed 28-Aug-19 14:46:33

ann Sorry to read of your experience flowers Comments were made by people who know nothing of your history I imagine.

BBbevan Wed 28-Aug-19 14:45:05

Marydoll exactly right. Posts are now mostly bland for fear of the PC police.A little spice makes things a lot more interesting

Minniemoo Wed 28-Aug-19 14:34:14

I'm sure you can remember Less

annsixty Wed 28-Aug-19 14:33:55

I started a hasty and ill considered OST on Saturday evening.
I asked if I was being unreasonable and was soon told I no uncertain terms I was.
I accepted that and said I was wrong.
This did not stop some posters.
I had some very snidely and spiteful replies and was called a total twit.
I was very upset especially as some, quite a few posters I had never heard of.
This wasn’t the GN I joined where if you can’t think of anything nice to say don’t say anything.

Lessismore Wed 28-Aug-19 14:31:57

tell us about the mauling....was it lions?

Minniemoo Wed 28-Aug-19 14:05:10

I'm quite new here. I've almost left a couple of times due to being mauled. I didn't leave due to my inability of locating the 'how to leave' area. Despite being told how to do it. More than once.

So I'm still here. Lingering and lurking mainly.

But I must say I look forward to seeing GG's comments as she is rather amusing.

It's a shame that some questionable posts are allowed and others aren't.

I suppose it's all to do with who complains /reports

Ramblingrose22 Wed 28-Aug-19 13:56:03

I think it must be a difficult balance to strike sometimes for GNHQ.
I don't like to read exchanges between people who just enjoy being rude or sarcastic to each other but it seems to be the way of the world at present.
I once joined the online chat part of a magazine I subscribed to and complained about the numerous pet photos and adoring comments in response to them that I had to scroll through every day to get to the subjects I was interested in.
I asked the magazine for a new thread or area of the website to be dedicated to the pet lovers because this wasn't why I had joined.
You wouldn't believe the abuse I received and I got no support from whoever managed the online chat so I left it.

glammanana Wed 28-Aug-19 13:53:43

ninathenana So true with your post,I think back to the early years when the first thing I did of a morning was to log into GN its a long time since I did that and had a good laugh at the posts whilst enjoying a early brew.

Gonegirl Wed 28-Aug-19 13:49:24

Nobody can be funny, or even a bit different, with the threat of being booted out hanging over them.

Gonegirl Wed 28-Aug-19 13:47:44

I think HQ take it all too heavily tbh.

Why not take a few chances HQ?
