Hello, everyone.

As we approach the end of the year, we at GNHQ are thinking about what we can do to improve the site for everyone in 2024. Simply put - we think we need a makeover!

What we’d really like to know is does Gransnet hit the spot, or is there something you're itching for. What features do you love, (or not) and is there a gap we need to fill? We’d also like to know if you think Gransnet reflects who you are and if not, how can we make it more ‘you’?

If you were in charge at GNHQ for the day, what changes would you make? Anything from the layout or the topics to even the name Gransnet (AI suggested ‘nananook.com' grin) - we want to hear it.

Your opinions matter to us and we’re all ears.

Thanks,
GNHQ

I don’t understand why Gransnet can’t have the same features as Mumsnet. Mumsnet is far from perfect but it’s got to be better than the current Gransnet that is very very basic.

We also used to have Christmas themed 'Smileys' - no such luck now! sad

They're still there but the short it isn't showing. Eg. for tchwink just type tchwink in square brackets

Indeed we did. And wasn't there a roast chicken imoji that had a particular meaning but I can't remember what it was.

No to a name change
No to a dislike button.
A edit button would be useful.
Also being able to read all OP replies like Mumsnet.

Why do certain topics never reach the Active list? Probably been mentioned already.

I posted on an old tv thread about ‘Vigil’s’ return, as I saw no point in starting a new one. Only received one comment from BlueBelle, and she must have picked it up from ‘last hour’ or ‘last day’.

Have stuck another comment on this morning, no, not on Active.

Often seems to happen with tv forum, why? It’s often the most looked at one.

🤷‍♀️

I found the original Vigil post on the TV thread. Only 4 down from the top. It has 208 posts.

So we did, danni, I'd forgotten those

Totally agree with changing the swimming picture on the home page. It's been there for as long as I can remember.

Sometimes posts just seem to disappear with no explanation, too. I assume they must have been reported. Who knows ? I guess, who cares? It is a little odd, though.

Iam64 Tue 19-Dec-23 20:46:06

I agree Rosie. I’ve seen posts that seem to me to breach guidelines stand because no one reported them. Occasionally a flurry of deletions occurs with none of the deleted posters given a reason.

Rosie51 Tue 19-Dec-23 17:43:43

I think explaining how someone has transgressed the guidelines to have a post deleted would be helpful. For example 'you made a personal attack on another poster, that is unacceptable' or 'you used swearwords that are unacceptable on GN' etc. The guidelines are very non-specific so being told you've somehow violated them, without it being spelled out isn't helpful. I don't mean in the actual thread but in a message to the poster.

Yes to Doodledog’s post at 7.43 today 19.12.23.

Iam64 Tue 19-Dec-23 08:21:31

Support for Doodledogs comment at 07.43 on 19.12.23
HQ respond to reports by looking at an individual comment. There seems to be no attempt to consider context, the persistent complainer, or the various posts leading up to a complaint and request for deletion.
I endorse what Doodledog says

Doodledog Tue 19-Dec-23 07:43:53

I’d like to put in a plea for consistency and consideration when it comes to posts being deleted by HQ.

It very much seems as though persistent complainers get others’ posts deleted because they express views that contradict their own, and that because HQ are alerted to the post, not the thread, they are dealt with out of context. When new readers see the deletions it can look as though the complaining poster is the victim, when that is absolutely not the case.

I understand that mods can be busy, that these are judgement calls, and that threads are seen in isolation, but it would be good to have a more transparent policy please.

Can we have an AIBU voting button?

Good idea.

Definitely NO to OPs being able to close a thread they'd started.

It could end up with threads being closed on a whim - I think I'd probably not bother to comment if that were to be ruled in. It is the way threads develop and meander that make it interesting.

If the OP no longer wishes to be part of the topic she could announce the fact that she's not responding further - an option to do just that at a later stage at the beginning of the topic would be a better alternative.

I can imagine that there might be too many "COMMENTS ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED ON THIS THREAD" if the original poster were allowed to close it. I belonged to a group on FB where this happened frequently. In the end, people just stopped posting, fewer posts meant fewer people bothering with the group and it just fizzled out into the archives.

JackyB Fri 15-Dec-23 08:34:53

I hope no one is holding their breath for another blue/GNHQ posting on this thread. Look out for a new thread of this ilk about the same time next year.

Oh, and nothing changed on the site until then either. At least, not for the better.
