Please stop quoting others as it makes threads too long

Why do posters keep quoting other posters as it makes such a long read? Purple boxes and paler purple boxes? (I wouldn't even know how to do it.) Why can't someone just say "*ANOther*, I totally agree with you when you said x,y,z" and not keep on pasting the whole of a previous post into yet more boxes. Sorry this isn't the technical way to describe it but, when I see a really long thread, quoting stuff I've already read, I just skip over it.

As for using 'quote' for a post that is just before your own response, sometimes other people have posted while I'm writing my response, so the response is separated from the post being responded to. Which could also be confusing.
That's true, too.

As someone who is frequently at odds with other posters I find it necessary to use the quote facility when replying to specific posters. What then sometimes happens is another poster chips in with a comment which needs a response. I don't know how else to continue a conversation which involves 3 or 4 posters.
Just skipping any of it is fine.

You could try getting on with people, Gloryanny 😂

I do this quite a lot…and will carry on ….

It’s the arguments and the tit for tats that make the thread long. 🙄

Namsnanny Sun 05-May-24 14:51:39

I just do what seems the most helpful at the time.

A fast moving conversation requires quotes whether it is to the last poster or one back a ways.

Surely looking down to the last person to write on a multiple quote (ie lots of bocks) stops repeat reading?
It also allows those who don't read all the thread (a bugbear of mine) to catch up.

Sorry, but I shall still use the quote button

I use a quote to make it clear which part of a discussion I am replying to.
Sometimes I try to 'cut and paste', especially if the post I'm replying to is a long one. but the italics don't always work for me so that make for confusion.

I find the quote option useful.

You say you dont know how to use it. There’s a clue in the word ^quote in the posters box.
It’s slightly 😉annoying when someone posts others posters words and doesn’t use italics to let you know they’re quoting someone else’s words.
I will carry on using the quote facility.

Yes, I agree.

It's sometimes difficult to work out what a poster is quoting and what they are actually saying themselves as they don't use ^^ on either side of the quote.

So yes It’s slightly 😉annoying

But if a thread gets to about 998 posts, it's great to have The Last Word 😁

Because it's quick and easy.

I don’t use the quote facility if there are more than three responses on it if possible as I agree that too many make it hard going to read through and make sense of.

MayBee70 Sun 05-May-24 18:04:43

Probably wouldn’t need the quote facility if HQ would let us be able to ‘like’ posts which other forums seem to be ok with.

Why not? A 'like' button would just act to reduce the number of posts on a thread, and the forum would shrink and possibly die out altogether, as people would 'like' instead of posting "I agree'. I don't know why someone would 'like' instead of quoting though.

Oh yes, it can spread down the page and get confusing.

I wish we could tag the poster we're quoting, or just to reply to them, as you can on Mumsnet. Maybe you can and I haven't worked it out?

Actually, quoting posts can't make threads any longer as threads are limited by the number of posts, not by the length of individual posts.

When a thread reaches 1,000 posts it then stops and, if anyone wishes to continue the discussion, they can start a new thread with a similar heading.

A post can be short, even just one word, or it may be lengthy and involve quotes, but it is just one post in the one thousand (or fewer) that is part of a thread.

I’ve never been that confident using “copy and paste” though

lemsip Sun 05-May-24 20:28:18

I agree with Skydancer stop the quote on quote on quote

comments in between become lost

Could you just cut and paste relevant phrases?

How? I use the quote button but would often prefer to only quote a bit of the previous post but I can’t do it. I would also like a like button so that I could just show my agreement without commenting myself.

Calendargirl Mon 06-May-24 06:53:18

I like the ability to ‘quote’ and will continue to use it.

Never seems an issue to me.

I find it more annoying when people have obviously not bothered to read what others have actually posted, judging from some of their comments.

Katie59 Mon 06-May-24 07:04:26

If there are multiple quotes on a controversial thread I do copy and paste rather than extend the thread, in general there are few conversations that are too long

It depends on what you are using to post, GrannyRose. If it is a phone or iPad, you press the first word you want to quote, It will be highlighted and two dots will appear on the highlighted bit. You drag them to cover the whole of the quote, and you will se an option to copy. Click that, then go to where you want to put your quote and click. The option to paste will appear, and you click that. Ta Da!

On a computer, it's even easier. You just highlight the relevant bit, press 'control' to get the option to copy, go to where you want the quote to go, press 'control' again and take the paste option.

You can also highlight, go to Edit at the top of the screen and select 'copy', then go to where you want to put your quote, click and go to Edit again and select paste.

The explanation is more complicated than doing it😎

Cossy Mon 06-May-24 10:32:24

Sorry OP, whilst I do see your point, where appropriate I will continue to use “quote” especially on very long threads
