Facebook and Instagram public posts to be used for training artificial Intelligence - but you can object.

Hi XXXXXXX,

We're getting ready to expand our AI at Meta experiences. AI at Meta is our collection of generative AI features and experiences, such as Meta AI and AI creative tools, along with the models that power them.

What this means for you

To help bring these experiences to you, we want you to know that we'll use public information like public posts and comments from accounts of people 18 years or older on the basis of legitimate interests. We'll do this to develop and improve AI at Meta. You have the right to object to the use of your information for these purposes. If your objection is honoured, going forward we won't use your public information from Facebook and Instagram to develop and improve generative AI models for our AI at Meta features and experiences. If you've already objected, you don't need to submit another request.

Elsewhere it is states that "In the coming days, Facebook and Instagram users will start receiving notifications explaining what is changing and how to access the objection form." so if you use or view FB or Instagram you can expect to get a similar email from them with a link to the objection form.

I put this into the text box on the form - "I object to Meta using my public information from Facebook and Instagram to develop and improve generative AI models for their AI at Meta features and experiences.
The GDPR, the Data Protection Authority in the EU and in the UK, forbids the use of people's information and data unless with specific permission, which I do not give. The law has a thirty-day grace period to comply."

Note that this is about public posts. Private posts to/from family and friends are already excluded. On the other hand, mentions of you publicly on their sites by people who themselves have not objected could still be used.
