Where are the immigrants taken when they arrive in the uk?

This is not a thread to discuss whether they should be here or not, or how they got here, this has been covered several times before. What puzzles me is where they are taken. Some weeks the best part of a thousand arrive, either on inflatables or having been picked up by our border control boats. Where on earth do they go? What an absolute nightmare for the people in charge of finding them accommodation. I can find no information on line. Does anyone know? I am just curious of the logistics of finding endless bed and board for so many.

I can see all viewpoints but I am saddened that the venom is directed at the asylum seekers in the hotels and not against the system. I volunteer for a charity that supports all the needy in our county including the asylum seekers at our local Best Western hotel. The problems arise because it takes more than two years for their applications to be processed and meanwhile they have nothing to do. A friend volunteers for a group that gives them English lessons and our charity arranges football sessions to give them something to occupy their time. I know some of you will feel this is a bit over the top but it is at least a small attempt to deal with the problem rather than just complaining.

A lot of people here are swallowing the right wing media. It is not a piece of cake waiting to get leave to stay- refugee status. They cannot work even voluntarily. Very limited resources. If lucky they live near a city with access to charities who can help with family reunification and house and job hunting once they have leave.
I worked with those waiting.
They were largely very appreciative and if they trusted you told you their stories. Murdered police brothers, smashed kneecaps for being in opposition, gay …

That's just the ones that are picked up officially. I have seen videos of these rubber boats landing on beaches and black lads just running for it into suburban streets. God knows where they go from there. I feel very sorry for people living in these south coast towns.

I have not seen any videos, but I have wondered about people coming in various other points along that coastline, obviously not in such great numbers but coming all the same and then just vanishing,
We don’t know who they are. we don’t know what their intentions are and they are not all fleeing persecution
It’s a ticking time bomb and things are going to get rough,we are the laughing stock of the world while our own people suffer..
I wonder what the young men who died during the two world wars would think now if they look down upon this once great country, I think they would have their heads in their hands weeping..😢

We live in Folkestone, one morning we were walking along the pathway above the beach, we noticed a lot of people looking out to see. We joined them and watched a dinghy approach the shore, about 12 men got out, had a look around and casually dispersed in different direction ( all on their phones). I knew it was a regular thing in the area yet I was still shocked.

A valid question Bazza and one which most people have been puzzled about.

Yes, a very valid question
Take no notice of those who jump on you, you are perfectly entitled to share what you want many of us agree with you..

It would appear there is no answer.

I’ve seen three now, all bare footed. One came on my mums bus bare footed swinging a chain. What’s that all about?
Bus driver didn’t throw him off the bus.
Mum said she was frightened to death.

Seen loads but three of them were bare footed I should have said.

Well where do they go then ? Are they dispersed throughout the country or do they all just stay round the South coast area?
Do they get sent to Scotland and the north? If they are filling up hotels where do tourists actually go ? Who feeds them, do they get free meals or do they have to buy their own?

Plenty up North, all wandering up & down. Saw two fighting yesterday, nearly knocking an elderly man on to a busy road 😩

I note the usual reference to "our homeless". The issue of homelessness, particularly on the streets, is not a new one and should not be seen as a result of immigrants.

It's not, although it could exacerbate it - but what are we doing about it?

Bridie22 Sun 03-Aug-25 11:28:53

If the government has reduced the number of hotels they have been using to house migrants, but the number of migrants landing is still rising, it is a reasonable question to ask " where are they being housed" and surely it must impact on availability of accommodation to homeless people, people looking for homes to rent and people needing emergency accommodation?

My feeling is that various social issues - poverty, rising rents, sale of council housing, broken homes and addiction - or a combination of some or all of these factors, are why we have so much homelessness.

Also, many years ago, psychiatric and mental disability hospitals were emptied and have now, in the main, been sold and turned into expensive - sometimes gated - housing developments. Their needs were meant to be catered for with "care in the community", which has worked for some, though hasn't really addressed addiction issues. When people were in crisis in those days, they could turn to these institutions for temporary shelter and help - now you will see people who have very obvious mental health and addiction issues sleeping rough on the streets.

I think the opening post was a perfectly reasonable one.

The News shows people arriving in this country from rubber dinghies, they are escorted ashore wrapped in blankets or whatever those foil coats are.

Then that’s it. I have often wondered where they go next. I know all about the hotels, but they seem to be full of single men. Where are the women and children sent?

I have asked this before, and been told there are very few women and children. That’s odd, as it’s always them who get spoken about when the dangerous crossings are mentioned.

As for who pays for everything, the accommodation, food, spending money, health care….well, as a tax payer, I do.

It’s not ‘The Government’, it’s the good old British tax payer.

Maybe it would help when discussing the subject to distinguish between 'immigrants' and 'illegal migrants'. Yes, it's a legitimate subject to discuss but too often there is no informed discussion, just ranting and throwing about wild accusations stirred up by the usual trashy newspapers/media and the latest diatribe from the representative of Clacton (who seems unable to find his way there to represent his constituents).

Allira Sat 02-Aug-25 22:48:09

Actually, it is stated 'reception centres' so not just one.

Initially to Manston in Kent, a secure site, for security and identity checks, it’s a former RAF site.

Thanks, JaxJacky

Allira Sat 02-Aug-25 22:27:44

Don't worry, Bazza!

No, you're not on the wrong site, posters are allowed to start threads, ask questions, as long as it is within guidelines.
Other posters may not like it, but that is their problem. They could answer with sensible information if they wished to do so.

Bazza Sat 02-Aug-25 22:22:12

No I am not a man! Perhaps I used the wrong site, but I’m not trying to stir up feelings, goodness knows there have been enough threads on immigrants. I just genuinely wondered if anyone knew the logistics of housing so many people, whether they’re immigrants or not. I really didn’t mean to rattle any one, and I’m sorry if I inadvertently did. And just for the record I’ve been on Gransnet for years.

What kind of identity check can you do on someone with no passport. And can't speak English? Ir so they say.

The whole situation if it wasn't so serious. Is an absolute joke. A pantomine

Allira Sat 02-Aug-25 21:35:48

Never assume anything.

I think Bazza has been trying to stir up feelings and start a debate - he surely reads newspapers/watches tv/sees things online. He knows the answers to his own questions here.

He?

Why assume Bazza is a man?

Why is this on ‘site stuff’?

Just so they can start another similar thread in another part of the forum under the pretext of it being a different subject [sigh...].

Maybe it is someone unused to the site. I don’t recognise the name.

Bazza has been on Gransnet for years.

It was a perfectly reasonable question but obviously some posters see it differently.

Perhaps it was just a mistake putting it under Site Stuff.
