We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

My 93 year old Mum has never used soap on her face. Just a warm, damp flannel. Followed by Ponds cold cream. She still looks amazing. No one can believe her age

I tell everyone to use sunscreen!! I didn't use it enough when I was younger & ended up with some pigmented skin on my face. In hindsight I would have look after my skin more so that It looked younger now! I have had a great treatment to help it look better but I swear by sunscreen now

My mothers best beauty tip was if you wanted to lighten your hair, put lemon juice on it when your going to be in the sun. it opens up your cuticles and so the sun lightens it, I've passed this tip to my daughters and grand daughters. Its a lot better for your hair than bleach and you get a cool simple new look if you fancied a change! My granddaughters still do it these days smile

My mum always used Nivea to moisturise her face - a blue pot with white writing - and thick white cream. She swore by it and, although I do use Nivea nowadays, there is so much more choice and variety. I don't know what she would think of the choice nowadays - she was definitely of the less is more generation in both make-up and skin care.

My mother told me to drink lots of water. I notice when I become dehydrated that the skin on my forearms becomes very wrinkly and when I top up it's OK, so it must be true!

Dab egg white on you face for an instant tightening and smoothing of the skin. Advice from mother!

My mum always taught me to stay out of the sun and protect my skin from it because she always said that's what ages you most! My Mum travelled a great deal when she was in the Navy and said foundation, the powder variety will fill your pores in a good way keeping pollution and dirt out so you won't suffer from spots etc! I don't get spots! She also said you should always remove your make up, change it regularly and moisturise as often as possible. I'm 40 now and have followed this advice since I was in my late teens. My skin is my best feature, no wrinkles yet, no sun spots and no blemishes. My Mum was an amazing woman!

My mom always advised me never to go out without vaseline on my lips as every kind of weather affects them. I tell my daughters the same now except they use lip balm. We never suffer from sore lips

Lucylucciano Thu 19-Feb-15 18:33:33

My mum always encouraged me to moisturise the skin morning and night, she swore by Ponds face cream!
She also said that even when you dont feel like wearing any makeup, apply a bit of lipstick and it will make you feel more confident :-) I always do this now.

My Mum didn't do make up or have a beauty regime at all, but my Gran always told me to wash my face in as cold water as I could, never use soap on my face but keep a rough flannel and use that instead and use Pond's Cold Cream at night. Gran had beautiful skin with very few lines even into her 80's. I have tried to keep to her advice and do get told my skin is very good for my age :-)

always wash your face with hot water and soap first thing and last thing

My mother told me to choose a base colour for my wardrobe (i.e. Black, or Navy) build a matching capsule of items around it, and you will have something to wear appropriate to most occasions. Also, that it's a good idea to buy clothes when you see something you really like or it's good value in a sale, rather than specifically shopping for a special occasion.

My mum always told me to moisturise hands and neck as they were often neglected and gave away a woman's true age; I think she was right.

GrAnne2 Thu 19-Feb-15 17:44:05

Always told my daughters to cleanse thoroughly at night & care for the eye & neck areas from their late teens (areas that show age first).

susiesusie Thu 19-Feb-15 17:32:38

My mum encouraged me to start wearing foundation at a very early age. It was fashionable at the time, but to be honest I didn't really need it and especially as it was really dark shade and left a tide line on my neck. What it did do however, was protect my skin from the sun, because I continued to wear it on a daily basis. Obviously, this set the trend for wearing superb make up such as L'oreal as I got older, and at 58 years old I truly have a lovely skin..Thanks mum x

We were instructed to stay out of the midday sun long before it was known how damaging it was to skin.

My grandmother's dressing table always had a large bottle of lavender water which she used as a pick-me-up, as a linen refresher and as a perfume.

My mother's dressing table always had a bottle of Yardley Lily of the Valley eau de toilette and a jar of Pond's beauty cream. The cream was applied liberally before bedtime - and so were those dreadful, plastic hair curlers!

becky004 Thu 19-Feb-15 16:39:48

My mother alwas told me to remove all make up before you go to bed, cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day. And put vaseline on lips to keep them soft, and a dab on the eyebrows to keep them looking tidy!

snapdragon Thu 19-Feb-15 15:48:38

My Mother told me to dab a little peroxide on spots to dry them up, it seemed to work but don't overdo it!

paulandrach Thu 19-Feb-15 12:28:20

I've told my three daughters about the importance of keeping your skin protected in the sun to prevent wrinkles (and obviously cancer) and they all religiously drink water, and plenty of it. I'm pleased to say that they have glowing, healthy skin so it seems they do listen to me sometimes!

dragonfly63 Thu 19-Feb-15 10:40:25

My mother taught me to use sugar water on my hair when I put rollers in - this is one tip that I don't use. She also told me to rinse my face well after cleansing with tepid water and this seems to be a good idea as my skin is still quite good at 60.

Susandani Thu 19-Feb-15 10:28:13

My mum told me to use vaseline on my eyelashes instead of mascara, it gives them definition, lengthens and thickens them. I still do this now and have told my daughter to do the same, I think she will when the false eyelash trend is over... wink

bethymorgan Thu 19-Feb-15 08:10:28

Get lots of beauty sleep x

spaghetti Thu 19-Feb-15 07:50:20

Always take your make up off and moisturise day and night!

jeanio Wed 18-Feb-15 23:47:08

My mother told me to moisturize every day regardless of whether I was going out or wearing makeup. I also passed this advice onto my daughter and granddaughter.

pinkspideruk Wed 18-Feb-15 23:37:40

My mum said to use mayonnaise as a moisturiser for hair.

Also to rinse hair with freezing cold water to keep it shiny.
