The first thing to do would be to get a flu shot at the earliest opportunity. After that making sure you wash your hands a lot. You have to remember that the cold and flu virus is easily spread. if someone sneezes into the hand without using a tissue and then uses that hand to touch an object you can then pick up that virus even if its a few hours later. Buy a hand sanitizer and use it often and always use tissues instead of your hand when sneezing or coughing.

I'd say it was pretty hard not to get a cold this time of year but washing hands regularly and covering mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing.

Blondie82 Wed 14-Dec-16 19:18:35

I wash my hands when back from shopping as I believe germs are passed on to others when using trolley & door handles.

Sensible hygiene precautions, eating properly, dressing warmly and lots of fresh air.

Parsleywin Wed 14-Dec-16 13:05:15

Frequent, thorough hand washing. Rocket science it ain't, but it does seem effective!

goose1964 Wed 14-Dec-16 12:49:35

prevent flu with the jab but colds are so hard to prevent the best way of stopping those is to eat a well balanced diet so your immune system is as strong as it can be

It's impossible to stop children picking up every single cold, but no one wants to catch every bug going. I always carry wipes and anti bac hand gel, to use if we can't wash hands somewhere. And we all have the flu jab.

I do worry that we may be over-cleaning our homes nowadays, but the fact remains that infant mortality is thankfully much lower now than in previous generations. While there are obviously many reasons for this, I do think better hygiene levels have played their part.

Frequent washing of hands, tissues hat can easily be disposed of and keeping well by eating a varied diet and lots of walking to get out in the fresh air

The thing I have found most effective is high dose Vit D. Taking this every day has kept me cold free for a few years now and I used to catch every one going.

Dress appropriately for the weather. Keep yourself warm and dry.

I have found that frequent handwashing has helped this winter - especially with lots of sick little ones.

However, a friend who is very rarely sick told me that she takes a high dose of vitamin D (20,000iu) so I've just started doing that too.

My hints and tips are to try and avoid crowds, take hand wipes with you when out and about as germs are lurking everywhere. When someone at home has a cold, wipe general surfaces with Dettol diluted in water.

As viruses can enter your system through eyes and nose, along with mouth, by not touching these areas you can reduce your risk of catching colds.

Teach children to sneeze into a tissue as this reduces the risk of germs spreading.

When I am out of the house I always wear gloves. I have my flu jab and take my multivitamins always drink fresh orange and eat healthy . When in the home I use anti bac as I walk in and throughout the day. My immunity is low so I am very careful I use the dettol antibac aerosol on door handles and toilet seats telephone and TV remotes. My father has cancer so i am super vigilant on micro bacterium.

Sellins Tue 13-Dec-16 11:27:33

Use a hand sanitiser.

rocketriffs Mon 12-Dec-16 22:19:09

Get the flu jab and eat healthy food. I don't believe in making tour environment sterile and completely free of bacteria. Weakens your resistance.

beeelaine Mon 12-Dec-16 17:43:16

Vitamin D - people forget all about it and it really does help your immune system as well as good for your bones, i would recommend you take it daily during the winter months!

Apart from that if you are eating fruit and vegetables and a balanced diet you should be getting all you need but its a good idea to stock up on some of those tonics the chemist sell - which are great for a pick me up if you get flu.

Also my other tip is to cook an extra dinner each time you make a sunday dinner - freeze it and then you have a lovely dinner full of goodness to eat when you are back to eating again without cooking.

Stay warm and its not unpolite to tell people to stay away who have been really poorly!

Lots of handwashing, and if you're using touch screens to shop, or buy tickets, then use the knuckles of your hand rather than your fingertips.
