Take Five, have launched their new ‘Too Smart To Be Scammed?’ test, as part of Take Five to Stop Fraud week and they would love you to take the test and share your result and your thoughts.

Here’s what Take Five have to say: “Take Five to Stop Fraud is a national campaign that offers advice to help everyone protect themselves from preventable financial fraud. It educates individuals to help them spot scams and urges people to stop and consider whether the situation is genuine – to Take Five and think if what you’re being told really makes sense. Remember, ‘My money? My info? I don’t think so.”

It is becoming increasingly difficult to spot a scam as criminals are more sophisticated than ever; however there are still steps you can take to protect yourself and learn how to spot a scam before you have given away any personal details. Take the test, find out if you’re too smart to be scammed and let us know what you think. How did you score? Did you learn a new way to protect yourself from scams and frauds? What did you find the hardest about spotting a scam? Were there any bits you were surprised you got wrong or right?

Everyone who takes the quiz and posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I got 7/8, happy, would rather be overcautious

rocketriffs Mon 12-Feb-18 17:46:54

I scored 6 because my bank does not send emails as part of their security regime, so I always ignore any emails that claim to be my bank because they wouldn't be genuine.

coolbeans Mon 12-Feb-18 14:13:34

7 out of 8

Not bad, I do always check in my branch if my bank sends me emails or text

Dresden Mon 12-Feb-18 14:01:03

I got 7 right. Like other posters, I was a little over cautious. Still, probably better that than too trusting.

tinysidsmum Mon 12-Feb-18 13:47:57

I scored 7/8

Silvergran59 Mon 12-Feb-18 12:24:47

Pleased to say I got 7 out of 8 which I am pleased with, and the answer I got wrong I did not trust my 'gut instinct' and went with the answer I thought would be correct. Great quiz really makes you think.

auntyann Mon 12-Feb-18 12:23:27

Shocked that I got 6/8...need to be more aware!

carole251 Mon 12-Feb-18 11:05:32

6/8 for me... I thought I was more savvy than this.

Although I never click on links from emails and ring through use the direct numbers as listed for my banking, I see I'm going to have to be more careful.

notnecessarilywiser Mon 12-Feb-18 07:43:12

7/8 for me - as a PP said, one answer was dependent on whether I recognised any of the transactions!

Kittyme1 Sun 11-Feb-18 20:31:50

I got 8/8, which I was pleased to get. However, I had to really think about some of those questions.

grannybiker Sun 11-Feb-18 19:10:25

I got 8/8 smile
To be honest, I may have been more suspicious resulting in incorrectly rejecting legitimate contact if I hadn't already received communications along similar lines that WERE from my bank.
Still feel chuffed!

ItsGreatBeingAGran Sun 11-Feb-18 18:05:00

I scored 7/8, the only question I got incorrect was q4, although I would call the number, I would double check this was the correct number before calling.

There's so many different ways of being scammed, it can be so easy to be caught out if you're not observant.

You scored 8 out of 8!

elizabethmae Sun 11-Feb-18 00:41:14

I got 7/8 I am pleased with that. You can never be too careful

WombleLancs Sat 10-Feb-18 23:01:00

I got 7/8. I once got a call from my bank, asking me to confirm my details. I refused and said to the women "How do I know you really are from my bank and not a scammer?" There was a pause and she said "Erm, you filled in the contact form on our website about 15 minutes ago, asking us to call you." "Oh, yes, I did, didn't I?", I said, feeling rather stupid. She laughed and said I was right to be cautious.

lynwestie Sat 10-Feb-18 20:27:15

I scored 7/8 On reflection being over cautious on 1 of them

oliveoyl72 Sat 10-Feb-18 19:58:51

7 out of 8 got one incorrect because I read the question wrongly (took the quiz again to have a look and check). Pleased to know I'm pretty switched on to fraud/scammers tricks.

Jamaloka Sat 10-Feb-18 18:50:24

I got 8 out of 8.

grannysmith953 Sat 10-Feb-18 17:51:25

I got 8/8 but it doesn’t make me too confident, the scammers always seem to be one jump ahead. A nit picking approach to grammar and spelling does seem to help though....

DS64till Sat 10-Feb-18 15:31:53

6/8 which I don’t think is too bad

narrowboatnan Sat 10-Feb-18 13:53:48

I got 6/8 but I am naturally suspicious of messages like these. I would be less suspicious if I had a message from my bank after I had made an unusually (for me) expensive purchase. This has actually happened so now if I know I am going to make such a purchase I contact them beforehand to let them know what I’m up to. I think it’s good that measures exist to protect us from fraud.

Kirstyetjohn Sat 10-Feb-18 13:14:40

I got 7/8 because I thought one was a trick question. I am normally very careful as I used to work for a bank and saw fraud on customers accounts. People get caught out!

belo Sat 10-Feb-18 11:20:04

I scored 7/8 too! Again from being overly cautious. But, I knew this was a test so I was on the look-out. Would I have been so careful day to day? The email from the builder telling me of change of account number may have caught me out.

This is a really good test. I have sent it on to my parents who I worry are too trusting.

mcem Sat 10-Feb-18 08:37:50

Scored 7 but happy to be marked down because I was over cautious.

grannymary Sat 10-Feb-18 07:57:34

6 out of 8, so over cautious I didn’t trust the genuine messages, better safe than sorry. I tend to mistrust any messages received out unexpectedly
