We’ve all been asked this question at some point. Our answers can vary from ‘I wish I’d taken more risks’ or ‘I would have stopped caring about what people think’, to ‘I wish I’d had more fun’ or ‘I wish I’d travelled the world more’. But if you really think about it, what practical advice would you have really benefited from when you were younger? What would you have told your younger self? What would you have done differently? A recent survey carried out across Mumsnet and Gransnet revealed that some Gransnet users consciously put off financial decisions. Is going further with your finances something you might have given more consideration to, with the benefit of hindsight? Whatever advice you’d like to give to your younger self, Legal & General would love to know.

Here’s what Legal & General have to say: “On our savings journey, a nudge in the right direction can make the world of difference when it comes to our financial futures. It’s starting off early, saving little and often over a longer period, that can really pay off*. Although it’s never too late to start saving, what tips and guidance would have motivated you to do more with your money and just get started?”

Would you have taken more risks when you were younger? Is there any information you wish you would have known back then, such as how to save into your pension, how to invest your money or even how to save your money from an earlier age? Would you like to tell your younger self to be more confident in the decisions you make? Or perhaps you wish you’d spent more time with friends and family?

Whatever the advice you would like to give to your younger self, post them on the thread below and everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).*

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

I would say don't be afraid to try new things and have the confidence to do them. Learn as much as you can. Knowledge is never wasted.

Save earnestly, invest wisely, spend sensibly and borrow rarely.

Look after your mental health. It's every bit as important as your physical health.

Don't wait for the right time - it never comes and before you know it, a lot of time has passed

Live life to the full and never look back.

I should have married the man I wanted to and who wanted to marry me instead of the man my parents decided I was marrying. I should have stuck up for myself and had more confidence.

Try and be more confident as you have the skills to do the jobs i had growing up. Also go to the doctor as soon as you feel the back pain as i waited too long and ended up disabled at the age of 22 and i could not get an operation to sort my twisted spine as i was too old. Avoid people who just use you.

Jansau Fri 22-Feb-19 23:22:56

Don't have the operation. take your chances. Having the operation caused a debilitating stroke . Would sooner have gone quickly without the operation

I really wish that i had been more sensible with money and that i had saved my own private stash. Because at christmas my husband left me and emptied tbe bank account leaving me penniless. But knowing what i know now i should of always had a back up supply of money.

Senseilew Fri 22-Feb-19 20:54:20

Keep your mouth shut, keep your thoughts private and don't be worried by what other people think, because worrying wont stop them thinking.

mazann55 Fri 22-Feb-19 20:27:10

Start saving for your pension now no excuses

Enjoy life whilst you can as you never know what is round the corner and the only certainty is old age will catch up with you!
Work hard and make sure you have lots of fun - you deserve it!
Save more than you spend, budget and make sure you plan for treats too.
Be happy, you only have one life and there is only one special you!

Don't listen to what other people have to say, they are not always right!

Lesleysherrard Fri 22-Feb-19 19:24:01

Don't EVER buy a motorcycle!

Yamma Fri 22-Feb-19 19:06:49

For years I've only paid the interest on my mortgage..!Really wish that I'd paid even a little each month now because I'd love to retire but can't till the mortgage is finished! Also I'd have written down one thing my children and grandchildren did each day as they grew up.....so many memories would more readily come to mind if I had. Enjoy every minute.....the years really do fly.

When it comes to your finances, never assume that you can be dependent on others. No matter how small, always have a 'get out of jail' pot all of your own.

wendycl Fri 22-Feb-19 16:25:29

Go to university and expand your horizons

ScodieHo Fri 22-Feb-19 15:53:45

Don't worry, and do your own thing - it will all come out right in the end!

Txrxaxcxy Fri 22-Feb-19 13:03:45

Live life too the full every day and don’t take any notice of anyone’s criticism ? because it will be jealousy of what you have and what your doing

coolcatz1969 Fri 22-Feb-19 12:31:34

get the hell out of this country

julieps172 Fri 22-Feb-19 11:57:01

To be less concerned about what other people think.

Clioh Fri 22-Feb-19 11:31:02

My advice to me would be.... save for your retirement as soon as you start work. Don’t be afraid to take chances, but learn to say no to those who take you for granted. Be more confident in yourself.
Don’t believe everything you’re told and finally the grass isn’t always greener!

bradybunch Fri 22-Feb-19 11:17:20

love life and enjoy every minute of it ! !
