This activity is now closed for questions

If you’ve travelled across the globe, just starting to see the world, or even if you’re just starting to plan your first ever travel experience, Collette wants to help educate you on the ins and outs of escorted touring (travelling in a group to various destinations via a guided tour). Tour designer and travel expert Diana Ditto will be here to answer all your travel related questions.

Here’s some information about Diana: “Diana, the Director of Product Design for Collette, often spends more than 100 days a year travelling. Her job is to seek new and incredible travel experiences to build into Collette’s escorted tours, offering unique travel moments you can’t find on your own. To do this, Diana speaks with industry experts, local travel guides, and tour guests, researching and handcrafting bespoke travel experiences for Collette guided tours with her team.”

Perhaps you have a Collette trip coming up and would like a bit more information on how it will all work? Maybe you’ve been thinking about going on an escorted tour for a while and want to know where to start? Or maybe you’d like to know where the best destinations are for touring?

Ask Diana your questions about touring on the thread below and we’ll select 10-15 questions for her to answer and post her responses as soon as possible. All who leave a question below (regardless of whether it’s chosen or not) will be entered into a prize draw where one Gransnetter will win a £150 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

I am concerned about the amount of activity there would be as both me an my partner are pensioners. Can you opt out of some things or even select a more gentler holiday

Pumpkin2 Thu 06-Jun-19 21:09:24

Are such holidays suitable for the disabled?

Are there opportunities to 'do your own thing' if the days itinerary is not want i'm looking for and if travelling alone, do you have to share rooms and if not, do I get the same quality of room as a travelling couple. Don't want to be put in the broom cupboard.

If hubby and I travel together would it be easy to arrange if we wanted to do different excursions from each other ?

sammylea80 Thu 06-Jun-19 19:37:48

Do you have to pay single person supplements?

AliBeeee Thu 06-Jun-19 18:42:24

I have been on quite a few small group tours over the past 17 years, starting in my early 40s. The age range was usually very varied and on one trip we had people in every decade from age 18 to 70s. This always worked well, with everyone mixing well. The trips have been all over South East Asia and India.
On my last few trips, the age range seems to have risen markedly (in line with my own age!) and I wonder if group tours are now mainly taken by the over 50s?

Looks good

I would like to ask Diana what are some of the more obscure or unusual tours offered? I would also be interested to know about any places she has visited, checked out etc, but then decided not to offer guided tours for some reason or another - where were they and why would she decide against arranging tours there! (I think it is just as important to know about the pitfalls and places to avoid as it is the brilliant tours)

So much to see in too short a time, this is the problem.

I like the idea of many tours but often hear feedback that there was not enough time at places or the travelling between was too much. I fear this would spoil the trip.

We would like to visit the Rockies and other places in Canada. We would also like to experience New England, but we had also wanted to schedule a visit to New York next year. Does Diana have any suggestions or advice should we want to amalgamate a visit to New York with Collette tours?

Do any of the guided tours offer some time for people to do their own thing? I have relatives who live in different parts of the world so like to combine sightseeing with visiting people. Thanks.

I've looked at several trips on your web site. I like the additional information provided: e.g. pre and post night stays, meals, activity level, optional excursions, traveller reviews etc. No mention though of maximum group size?

Would love to go on an escorted tour but with some mobility problems I worry that I will be left behind

Ikea1234 Thu 06-Jun-19 15:52:47

Are there any travel agents providing the flexibility to attend some parts of a tour and not others, like dropping in and out of the itinerary? There are some places I would love to go to (Machu Pichu, India's Golden Triangle, Antarctica to name but a few) but I 'm not sure I would want to be tied to a group the entire time as I like to discover new experiences on my own also!

I would like to go New Zealand and definitely want to visit the film set of Hobbiton. Which is the best tour group to go with? I would travel as a single person so don't want to be with just couples and I want decent accommodation and some meals included and not to be shoved in some single box room!

I’m not brilliant in coaches. Can I pre-book my seats on any coaches in advance as I need to be forward facing and at the front,

hkswain Thu 06-Jun-19 14:07:02

My biggest issue is how limiting the tours can be - is it ever possible to have any free, unscheduled time on a travel tour?

Authoress Thu 06-Jun-19 13:53:28

I am a dyed-in-the-wool introvert and need decompression time alone. I'm certain that I'd offend people I was in a group with if they didn't know the syndrome - do you do tours for introverts with alone-time built in?

glennamy Thu 06-Jun-19 13:48:57

Are there tours to a number of countries in one guided tour... i.e. Far East, Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia? If so how long is the duration(s)? Thanks!

Helsbells68 Thu 06-Jun-19 13:05:50

Can you customise the trips you want to do or is is always a set itinerary.

carolynhey Thu 06-Jun-19 12:56:25

Is there any shorter tours round Europe you would recommend ?

Dizzyc73 Thu 06-Jun-19 12:34:14

I'd like to know whether any guided tours are specifically for people who are older and less mobile? My mother in law would love to do something like this, but she can't walk very fast and feels like if she was part of a tour she may let the group down and become a burden. I just wondered how it works, is there a minimum fitness requirement in order to travel? Thanks

andywedge Thu 06-Jun-19 12:31:35

I've always fancied Antarctica - is this possible?

Funkyferret Thu 06-Jun-19 12:18:15

Which parts of the world would you recommend that caters best for vegetarians and vegans, or are guided tours in general, quite good at making sure different diets will be catered for wherever it is located?

Holidayenthusiast Thu 06-Jun-19 11:59:57

Are there tours designed for people with chronic health problems who are no longer able to walk long distances or hike up steep gradients?

cathisherwood Thu 06-Jun-19 11:47:30

We went on a great tour while in Iceland where the tour guide was Icelandic and therefore could tell us cultural details from a native point of view.
Can you find out about who will be your tour guide and how experienced they are before you book a trip?
