The thought of decluttering ready to move fills me with dread and definitely puts me off moving!

lynndibb Mon 25-Nov-19 11:05:02

Just moved house.Great chance to declutter, still brought stuff we didn't need. Tip do a drawer or cupboard a day do not try to do too much.

I have moved house 7 items so I am quite confident about it. We will have one more move shortly. There is only the two of us and although I love my home the garden is too big for us to cope with. I would hate to live in a retirement flat, sorry but I don’t want to be surrounded by other old people. I have friends of all ages and I think it keeps you young mixing with all ages

I am in the middle of moving home at the moment and although its pretty nightmarish and stressful, the decluttering is doing wonders for my mental health! All the built up clutter was basically representing what was in my mind!
At least I can now enjoy a clean slate in my new home!

I have only moved house a couple of times and they were all really stressful. The only upside is that it does make sort out and get rid of stuff that you haven't used for a long time and could probably do without

I need to trade down to a smaller house next year and totally dread it the sheer upheaval fills me with dread

imustbemadme Sun 24-Nov-19 14:58:40

We are meant to be selling next year but I'm dreading it! I'm most concerned about where I'll go as I'm on my own.

We're going to need a lot a skips for his junk in the garage!

I'm looking forward to having my own space eventually, somewhere fresh where I can make new memories.

I have to move so no choice really and am making a note of everyone's good advice on here smile

I'm happy where I am now , moved here five years ago and have a nice big garden for grandkids to play .Would only consider moving if I won the lottery and could buy a barge !
Always wanted to live in one of those .Probably keep the house
too though .

Moving is always such a pain, having to pack everything in boxes etc and then unload it all in the new house!

volcanopete Sun 24-Nov-19 13:11:20

Moving house is so stressful I'm going to stay where I am.

rocketriffs Sun 24-Nov-19 12:24:46

The big thing holding me back from moving home is the expense. I want to change location to another part of the UK, but it's very costly. I don't mind packing, decluttering and furnishing a new home. I quite enjoy that aspect and find it exciting.

Luckily I have only ever moved house twice, with no intention to move again any time soon! Both times were extremely stressful but I found planning things well in advance and using lists to organise myself were life savers. And deciding to use a removals company to pack and move us was the best decision ever!!!

fishnships Sun 24-Nov-19 10:34:58

Just a small thing, but when moving if you are packing yourself it is easier not to empty the drawers, just stack them.

dwerry Sun 24-Nov-19 09:12:13

I've moved lots of times due to changing jobs and I always find it exciting. I love the fresh start feel you get and I also love getting to know a new area. I had to move to Luxembourg for 2 years, at one time, when my children were very young and that was a challenge but you always get through it because you have to deal with challenges in order to progress in life. Generally, people are always helpful so never be afraid to ask.

We have just moved house and the whole experience was massively stressful; such a upheaval! Communication from both estate agent and solicitors was often poor at times and wish we had used a removal company rather than attempting to move ourselves with the help of family

I enjoy the reminiscing as I go through things deciding to keep or get rid. I also enjoy the feeling of going into a clean new space where everything has it’s place.

The drawbacks to moving though are that it generally means downsizing, at this stage of life, and less storage areas, which I find frustrating.

You may leave good memories behind but just think of the new memories you make In your new home

I've only moved homes a handful of times, each time for a genuine reason. One time it rained all day on moving day and we got soaked, but laughed and laughed and loved it - many many years ago when I was in my early twenties. Slightly dread the thought of moving now as I am on my own.

wendycl Sat 23-Nov-19 19:10:27

We dreaded the thought of leaving our home and garden so much we've installed a lift to make it 'future proof'.

cuppatea Sat 23-Nov-19 17:44:14

The last time we moved it took a lot longer to pack everything than anticipated! If we move again it will be to downsize which will mean the vast majority of our furniture and belongings will need to be culled. I anticipate starting the decluttering at least a year before we start the move

I wouldn't mind you learning the harp next door to me Galen smile but am not in Gloucester but Shropshire. Grasp the nettle and move.

Get some help on board, it's not as bad as thinking about it. It can be a wrench after living somewhere for such a long time, but it's only bricks and mortar and being close to your DD in easier to manage accommodation will compensate.

albertina Sat 23-Nov-19 16:44:46

My last big move was 25 years ago from the North East to Devon. I used Pickfords and they were excellent. The told me how my possessions would go into a sealed container and would be safe. Stupidly I worried about it and labelled everything I owned. Some of the sticky labels are still there and remind me of my folly.

Galen Sat 23-Nov-19 15:51:17

I’ve now been in this house for 40+ years.
As it’s a large. house and I am very disabled, I’m afraid the time has come when I’m seriously considering moving to more suitable accommodation.
I want to be nearer my darling daughter in Gloucester but I really will miss my lovely view over the Bristol Channel.
The main problem however will be downsizing. I currently have a 4 bed house and it is extremely cluttered. I really can’t face the upheaval.
Also, would new neighbours appreciate me trying to learn the harp?
This is my project for when I retire next week. ( it’s probably the only chance I’ll ever get)

maisietoo Sat 23-Nov-19 15:00:31

Moving is not a thought for now but may be in the future. I would be worried about downsizing and where we could put all the stuff we have collected over the years.
