Suffering from either dry or itchy skin (or both) can be really difficult, especially if you aren’t sure of the triggers, remedies or what products to buy vs what you should steer clear of. Plus with so much information on skin out there it can be tricky to know where to look! Which is why Balneum would love you to ask all your dry, itchy skin questions to dermatologist Paula Oliver.

Here’s what Balneum have to say: “Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion helps to relieve itchy, dry skin, leaving skin feeling soft, soothed and hydrated. Created from soothing active ingredients such as urea and laureth-6.5, our dry skin and itch relief Lotion reduces irritation and locks moisture back into the skin. Easily absorbed, it’s proven to relieve the itch and is suitable for use with eczema and psoriasis prone skin. Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion has also just won the first ever Gransnet Rated!”

Here is a bit about Paula: “Paula qualified as a nurse in 1979 at The Royal Devon and Exeter hospital and has worked for many years in secondary care, as well as in primary care as a District Nurse. In 1994 her career pathway moved her into dermatology and Paula became the lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in a busy dermatology OPD and developed many nurse led initiatives. More recently Paula worked for Galderma (UK) Ltd a pharmaceutical company dedicated to dermatology and managed and led the UK nursing team for Galderma. This successful role entailed delivering education to HCPs on general dermatology, skin cancer and photodynamic therapy. She has published several articles relating to dermatological conditions and has completed a Diploma in Nursing, BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice, Master of Science in Clinical Studies and Education at the University of Brighton and is an Independent Nurse Prescriber. She is currently an active member of the British Dermatology Nursing Group.”

Do you have any questions for Paula? Do you want to know more about selecting the right product to relieve itchy, dry skin? Do you have a specific skin condition you would like advice about? Would you like to know how best to use their product?

Whatever your questions around dry and itchy skin, post them below and we will choose 10 in total for Balneum to answer. Everyone who posts their questions will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

My daughter has eczema and occasionally gets patches of it in “awkward” places such lips and eyelids. What products would you suggest for these delicate areas?

My son who is mid 30's suffers with eczema mainly on his face. Can he use this Balneum lotion on his facial area or is it just for the body, which is where my husband uses this oroduct. Therefore, can you recommend a lotion for the face instead of the regular tube of hydrocortisone cream given by the gp - as on the face you have to be careful to only apply a thin layer as it says it can thin the skin.

I've been using Balenum for about a month after receiving a sample bottle through the post. I've just reordered because it really does help with dry skin.
I've used Balneum all over but haven't tried it an the face because I'm used to a heavier / thicker cream for there. What I'd like to know is whether you think it would be a good idea to use another face cream over the top of balneum? Will this have any negative results?

I suffer with both acne and dry, itchy skin. How should I deal with it?

Ohmother Fri 28-Feb-20 17:17:22

I’ve been told to make sure my shower moisturiser has liquid paraffin in as that helps the best. Is that true?

Jacquilk Fri 28-Feb-20 15:58:53

I have really dry skin under my eyes. It makes me look like I have 2 black eyes at times. It really stings with most moisturisers or barriers, and nothing seems to shift it.
I’m reluctant to se anything medicated as it is too close to the eyes and very delicate skin.
Any suggestions?

Is it better to keep using the same moisturising product or should we have a break from it and use an alternative?

Icklecaffs39 Fri 28-Feb-20 13:58:36

I have a very itchy scalp that on occasions drives me mad. What is the best shampoo and conditioner to use please?

I suffer from a very itchy back. Living alone, it is difficult to completely cover my own back with the lotion. What about a spray and/or a shower cream?

I know what you mean Phoenix. Have had same problem. Saw a dermatologist who said I could have a op to remove a few lumps and bumps on my personal bits but I declined that and then she wasn’t interested. I can feel the swellings coming up and I put sudo cream on thickly eases the pain and takes 4/5 days to subside. At times uncomfortable to walk

What is the best cream/lotion to use on itchy legs? They are particularly bad after my daily bath.

My husband suffers from dry, itchy and red skin on his face, in his beard and on his bald head. He moisturises daily with various brands of well known creams for dry skin. He also uses hydrocortisone cream which he is prescribed by his doctor. This does work but only temporarily. He doesn't like to use it all the time as he is told it thins the skin so just uses it when he has a particularly bad flair up which is more and more frequent. Do you think Balenium would help?

jaybee66 Fri 28-Feb-20 13:20:41

I would like to know the best cream to feed the skin all round my fingernails as it constantly feels hard and dry.

H1954 Fri 28-Feb-20 13:02:29

I have dry skin which I can cope with by moisturising but I'm plagued with a very itchy scalp! I get lumps under the skin which can be quite painful at times but extremely itchy. I've even woken myself up in the night scratching at my scalp! I use a chemical free bar shampoo and conditioner as all the bottled products irritate the condition even more. I cannot even use products like Tgel which is supposed to be specially formulated for itchy scalps. There is no sign of dandruff and my GP hasn't got a clue either! Can you offer any advice please?

General itching has got worse since the menopause

Echame Fri 28-Feb-20 11:28:56

So many people swear by Aveeno products for dry skin but I wonder if this is really is the gold standard or are there better products out there for super dry skin like mine?

HHBBNN54 Fri 28-Feb-20 11:06:00

My partner has very itchy skin on his forehead and doctors do not seem to be able help. He has been given various creams but nothing seems to help. Any ideas how I can stop him continually picking at his forehead.

libra10 Fri 28-Feb-20 11:02:04

I have a mild form of psoriasis, and have used Aveena, Balneum, and other lotions and ointments to varying effects.

My question relates to whatever research is currently being done regarding psoriasis and eczema treatments, and whether it is possible that a cure will eventually be developed.

Craftycat Fri 28-Feb-20 10:54:17

I get red itchy skin under my breasts & in my groin. If left it becomes sore so I use Daktarin 2% on it - which I can buy over the counter.
It doesn't stop it but controls the itching a bit.
If there is a better option I'd love to hear about it,

Trebor33 Fri 28-Feb-20 10:45:47

After the menopause I find myself with very different skin type. I now have quite high skin colour/roseacea on my face plus dry skin patches. What can you recommend?

gardeningpower Fri 28-Feb-20 10:30:49

I have very dry skin on my legs and its sore sometimes and my legs and feet get hot in bed which makes it worse what cream can I use, cant use E45 as it makes me itch

burwellmum Fri 28-Feb-20 10:26:05

I get itchy spots and a rough itchy rash in reaction to certain detergent residues and materials - what should I use on it, I normally just wait for it to go away but that can take weeks.

Grannyjacq1 Fri 28-Feb-20 10:25:15

Have 'inherited' 2 giant sized pots of Hydramol when sorting out my mum's bathroom cupboard. Any advice on how to use it? Is it safe to use for washing face? It seems a bit too greasy to use as a moisturiser, but suppose would be OK on feet overnight, under a pair of socks. Or any advice on who to give it away to - it would seem wasteful to throw it away, as I think it's quite pricey - and someone might find it very useful.

Glosgran Fri 28-Feb-20 10:00:36

I frequently have itching on my abdomen although there is no rash or any visible sign of anything that could be causing it. Do you have any idea what could be the cause and what I can do to help it? Could it be a mineral or vitamin deficiency of some sort?
