Suffering from either dry or itchy skin (or both) can be really difficult, especially if you aren’t sure of the triggers, remedies or what products to buy vs what you should steer clear of. Plus with so much information on skin out there it can be tricky to know where to look! Which is why Balneum would love you to ask all your dry, itchy skin questions to dermatologist Paula Oliver.

Here’s what Balneum have to say: “Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion helps to relieve itchy, dry skin, leaving skin feeling soft, soothed and hydrated. Easily absorbed, it’s proven to relieve the itch and is suitable for use with eczema and psoriasis prone skin. Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion has also just won the first ever Gransnet Rated!”

Here is a bit about Paula: “Paula qualified as a nurse in 1979 at The Royal Devon and Exeter hospital and has worked for many years in secondary care, as well as in primary care as a District Nurse. I seem to have a permanently itchy back. There is nothing to see on the skin apart from a few broken veins. I've invested in a back scratcher which brings temporary relief, and how on earth do I apply cream to my back? Also, I have psoriasis on my scalp. Can I use Balneum on my scalp. Lastly (sorry for the long post), I have very itchy forearms which break out in red patches which sometimes bleed. My GP gave me Hydrocortisone which doesn't seem to help. Oh dear, I sound like one very large itch!

Geminijen
Double check for head lice.
Shake, comb or brush your hair over a white piece of paper, sink, pillow case.
Just one adult louse can cause awful
itching, the eggs are glued to the hair shaft so don’t move!
It’s only when they hatch you see the little b@@@@@s.

My problem is an itchy scalp. I've never experienced this before and I'm not sure what to do about it. I haven't changed my shampoo or conditioner. Having spent half term with the grandchildren, I even checked for nits grin Any advice much appreciated.

Hi,
I have psoriasis on my scalp that gets very sore and itchy. It also causes scales that look like dandruff, so I can’t wear dark clothes.
I have tried all the over the counter shampoos but they are not effective. Can you suggest what I can use that won’t make my hair lank and greasy?
Thanks

I have fairly dry skin on my face, so use moisturiser day and night. However, from time to time I get whiteheads around my upper cheek area so I am wondering whether there is a specific type of moisturiser I should be using or should I stop using night cream to allow my skin to "breathe?"

Is it worth wearing cotton gloves at night to break the itch/scratch cycle?

funsizescot1975 Fri 21-Feb-20 11:27:15

Ive tried E45 etc are there any over the counter creams that are best for the eye area? i dont wear much in the way of makeup, in fact wearing makeup doesnt seem to trigger it all.

What about skin with eczema?

Pjran Fri 21-Feb-20 09:56:01

I seem to have small very dry spots on my arms. So dry you can almost pick them off. Ordinary moisturiser doesn’t help.

Dry, red blotchy areas on arms, wrists and on face. Saw dermatologist a few years ago who diagnosed psoriasis but who also advised not using steroid creams unless absolutely necessary, but I have to use it when I get a flare-up, which happens about every 2 weeks, now. Diprobase moisturises, but doesn't hold back any flare-ups. Have been trying out a natural product which contains beeswax, propolis, honey and teatree oil, but not much improvement as yet (and it's very expensive).

Hi, Every year from May I reintroduce sunshine back to my skin (Vit D etc). I do this gradually and ultimately, after several weeks, I never do more than 30 mins; but I always get an itchy back, is there a reason for this?

pinktulips Fri 21-Feb-20 06:51:50

I have dry skin, and eczema on my elbows and backs of my knees, most of the time I tolerate it. It does flare up and spread from time to time where I get it on my kneck and hands. I have always used a non-bio detergent, one thing I have never done is a food intolerance test- is is worth going forward to see if any food groups contribute towards my condition.
Some nights are impossible to sleep without itching, as I don't wear creams as it's uncomfortable in bed. Thanks

I have three questions:

1. I've often wondered - could a high quality cream like Balneum be used on the face instead of spending money on the many products that are "specially formulated for older skin" etc. Surely a good quality cream is suitable for skin, period.

2. Should all skin creams contain a 30+ SPF or even 50+ SPF nowadays?

3. Is it true that SPF creams have to be re-applied every 2 hours as they lose their efficacy e.g. if you are spending a day in the sun?

Oceana8 Fri 21-Feb-20 01:23:14

Hi I have dry eyelids that crack, swell up and are very sore. Prescribed steroid cream that I am reluctant to use as can lead to glaucoma . I am struggling to find any products safe to use on eyelids.

grannybiker Thu 20-Feb-20 22:27:49

I had very intense itching as a side effect from Pertuzamab.
While creams and lotions can soothe a little, none work properly as the itch is neuropathic rather than dermatological. High doses of Gabapentin and gel packs kept in the freezer also help.

Every so often after I've been swimming, the top of my feet by my toes start to itch. I've been treating it as athlete's foot but not sure it is.

SwissMiss Thu 20-Feb-20 16:48:37

I'm going through the menopuase and apart from the usual hot flushes and night sweats I seem to itch all over my torso when I'm laying in bed at night.

TerriBull Thu 20-Feb-20 16:31:05

My question is the same as Moocow's can you develop eczema later in life? mid 60s, about a year ago I became very itchy with particular scaly patches in certain areas, the prescription ointment didn't work. My doctor also recommended Diprobase bought over the counter at any pharmacy, which happily does work for me.

Gaunt47 Thu 20-Feb-20 16:08:41

Itchy scalp is my problem, doesn't matter which shampoo I use. I understand this is quite common as you age.
Is there a cream to rub into the skin which doesn't leave hair looking greasy please?
