Suffering from either dry or itchy skin (or both) can be really difficult, especially if you aren’t sure of the triggers, remedies or what products to buy vs what you should steer clear of. Plus with so much information on skin out there it can be tricky to know where to look! Which is why Balneum would love you to ask all your dry, itchy skin questions to dermatologist Paula Oliver.

Here’s what Balneum have to say: “Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion helps to relieve itchy, dry skin, leaving skin feeling soft, soothed and hydrated. Created from soothing active ingredients such as urea and laureth-6.5, our dry skin and itch relief Lotion reduces irritation and locks moisture back into the skin. Easily absorbed, it’s proven to relieve the itch and is suitable for use with eczema and psoriasis prone skin. Balneum dry skin and itch relief Lotion has also just won the first ever Gransnet Rated!”

Here is a bit about Paula: “Paula qualified as a nurse in 1979 at The Royal Devon and Exeter hospital and has worked for many years in secondary care, as well as in primary care as a District Nurse. In 1994 her career pathway moved her into dermatology and Paula became the lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in a busy dermatology OPD and developed many nurse led initiatives. More recently Paula worked for Galderma (UK) Ltd a pharmaceutical company dedicated to dermatology and managed and led the UK nursing team for Galderma. This successful role entailed delivering education to HCPs on general dermatology, skin cancer and photodynamic therapy. Paula has recently moved into an independent consultancy role in Dermatology to deliver education, service development and clinical care. She has published several articles relating to dermatological conditions and has completed a Diploma in Nursing, BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice, Master of Science in Clinical Studies and Education at the University of Brighton and is an Independent Nurse Prescriber. She is currently an active member of the British Dermatology Nursing Group.”

Do you have any questions for Paula? Do you want to know more about selecting the right product to relieve itchy, dry skin? Do you have a specific skin condition you would like advice about? Would you like to know how best to use their product?

Whatever your questions around dry and itchy skin, post them below and we will choose 10 in total for Balneum to answer. Everyone who posts their questions will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

My hands are awful! Particularly at this time of year, despite me thinking I am being careful with them. They are red & sore in places, flaky, cracked and even bleeding in others. I've tried all kinds of lotions. Any advice for how I can really sort them out?

Does Paula answer these questions at all?

I have sensitive skin, and sometimes get rashes that flare up that are itchy and sore which then seem to go down- but would like to know what products to put on it when it happens. Thanks a lot!

Wonder what best body butter or lotion is best for going into skin quickly & is not oily or greasy like a few are ! Have noticed now I'm over 60 my skin definitely feels drier & rougher! Thanks ?

I don't generally use a moisturiser as I prefer to use a facial scrubbing brush whilst bathing to remove dead skin cells and then use a facial scrub which acts as a moisturiser. Is there anything else I could use that wouldn't sit on the skin, but would feed it and moisturise it, as I have found most supposed moisturisers useless.

Calenda cream works wonders

Any tips for dealing with patches of dry skin on the face. I have a typical oily t-zone but also get very dry patches on my cheeks and chin and I'm not quite sure how to tackle it and what product/s to use to be able to cater to both the oily parts and dry parts of my face. Ideas appreciated!

Hi Paula, My husband always had dry & itchy skin mostly on his elbows & knees since he's been working on the building sites for over 40 years. Since he retired last year he's been suffering more recently, he's been using E45 & Diprobase which is not helping much. He is kind of fed up now & want it healed! Kindly help & advise please.

Many thanks.

I have been diagnosed with excema in my ears and prescribed Betamathazone cream. Any ideas how I can improve the situation? I swim three times a week but earplugs make no difference.
Thankyou

What is the best way of preventing split skin on tips of fingers and thumbs in very cold weather?

mumofmadboys Wed 04-Mar-20 12:51:57

I would echo the previous question. Prevention and cure please.

I have trouble with the dry skin around the end of my fingers. I do get dermatitis and am prescribed hydrocortisone cream, which I use on outbreaks as necessary. I find it so hard to deal with the ends of my fingers though as I'm always using them and creams don't seem to work.
I also use cotton gloves at night sometimes after using thicker cream but usually forget.
What do you suggest please? Thanks

Any thoughts on how to protect our hands now that we have to wash them more often than before?

Mine are already getting sensitive and dry ..

I've solved my itchy dry skin problems by not using anything with perfume in it. Also by limiting the "products" I use to three: soap, shampoo, moisturiser.

My little granddaughter (not yet 2) suffers from Eczema which is particularly bad when she gets hot . It’s mainly in the insides of her elbows and knees but she has small patches on her back and tummy too. It’s fine when she is distracted but I feel s9 sorry for her as it’s obviously very itchy. We have tried a few different creams which help but nothing seems to completely clear it up. I would be grateful for any advice you can offer. Thank you .

With all this extra hand washing, using soap and hand gels, my hands are very dry and sore. I use hand creams regularly throughout the day but they are still as dry and chapped and itchy at times. Any suggestions of what else I can try?

I am 41 and still get spots. I think they are mainly hormonal spots but I would really like to know the best way to get rid of them and keep them gone.

My son has very dry cracked skin on his hands for which he has been prescribed many treatments by both his GP and a dermatologist, however neither have given him a diagnosis and no treatment has worked. I think it likely that he has palmar psoriasis, can a skin test confirm what the problem is?

lillyofthevalley Thu 02-Apr-20 16:23:36

@LucyBGransnet. any update on this thread please ?

alphacole1811 Sat 04-Apr-20 14:48:02

As constant hand washing my recyclables and for the current virus situation and also being mainly through the menopause, my skin seems a lot less elastic...what is the best way to rehydrate my skin at this time?

dragonfly63 Wed 08-Apr-20 14:47:38

My husband suffers from eczema on his hands. I am in the at risk group that needs to be shielded so he is washing his hands much, much more than normal as he needs to be the one to interact with the outside world. The normal hydrocortisone that he uses isn’t helping and he has deep painful cracks on his fingers. He is moisturising them after every hand wash. Can you give any advice please?
