We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

As I've not been out or seeing the grandkids, I've been keeping busy by watching tv, knitting, reading and using the internet

Andrea1 Tue 08-Sept-20 20:02:18

I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading and having a catch-up coffee and cake with friends.

I enjoy walking with my two dogs but also enjoy crosswords etc but find that I lose myself trying to finish so end up wondering where time went. When weather permits like to keep on top of garden which is nigh on never ending but enjoyable.

I watch YouTube in my spare time. It's a great source of unbiased truthful information. Just do your due diligence to test the veracity of your sources. Much better and more honest than any mainstream source!

I'm a crafter, everything from knitting to papercraft so my hands are always busy creating something for friends and family. I also enjoy making home decor items

I enjoy meeting up with one of my daughters to put the world to rights over coffee and cake or gardening. Particularly over covid gardening has given a great sense of achievement when its time to harvest.

I enjoy entering competitions and researching my family tree when I get some free time.

I love gardening and being outside, regardless of the weather. And walking the dog of course. When I am tired from a busy day I watch a bit of telly, I deserve it!

Now I have a little dog I spend it with him. He has some emotional difficulties so I watch programmes like The Dog Whisperer to help me make sense of his anxieties.

I can't think of a nicer way to spend spare time. He's such fun.

aligiraffe Wed 09-Sept-20 20:24:44

For the last few years I've had shortness of breath and poor mobility, so I spend the majority of my time at home in my recliner chair.
I'm quite content watching TV and doing competitions and games on my laptop and keeping in touch with family and friends.

Lorelei Wed 09-Sept-20 23:13:37

I spend time on my laptop learning about different things from Internet sources, entering competitions, e-mailing friends, doing jigsaw puzzles online etc. I also like doing hands-on wooden jigsaws that get sent on to my better half's father's cottage when I've completed them (they rent the isolated cottage sometimes, so wildlife watching, reading and puzzles are the main sources of entertainment - no TV or anything). I read a lot and this has been a lifelong habit. I have a reasonable collection of books my better half refers to as a 'personal library', and though I have read the majority there are still a fair few on the 'to be read' pile!

We will be moving house soon and I will have a greenhouse for the first time ever. I am looking forward to being able to grow more all year round and to be able to provide more home-grown food. Gardening will be my way to stay calm, stay focused and learn a lot. We have big plans for planting to make our new garden wildlife-friendly, to be mindful of pollinating insects with everything we plant, and to provide homes and food for as many species as we can. We have looked into providing a home for a few disabled hedgehogs and, once settled, we may even add beehives to the hedgehog houses, bat boxes, bird boxes & insect hotels plus all the hedges, trees and other plants in front and back gardens, living walls and roofs, climbers along walls and trellis, raised planters full of food for us and the wildlife. There is a large sheltered area behind two tall trees so I will also be researching what, if anything, I can grow or do there and we suspect it is where foxes may sit in the evenings - one of my new hobbies will be sitting in the conservatory watching foxes in the evenings and other wild visitors during the day. Long overdue, but I have also got a sewing machine - and plan on learning how to sew!

Needle felting, baking, seeing friends, watching tv, learning German.

CassieJ Thu 10-Sept-20 09:23:15

I use my free time to bake. I read lots of books. Visit family. Just chill as I don't get a lot of free time.
