My hopes for the future generations are that they each live the best life they can, look after their health sensibly, make good choices at school, with friends, with activities like sport, art, music etc and hope these help them make the right choices during their teens and into adulthood. I hope they will learn to be kind to each other as well as themselves, that they will recognise leading a good, even quite simple life can be rewarding. I would like to think future generations will treat the planet, animals and plant life better than any other generation, to use resources wisely, not be greedy or selfish, not to continue the arrogant trends of those who came before and put their own needs over those of other living things. Maybe consider finding solutions to the way we over-populate the planet (contraception, limiting how many children we have etc). I hope they will live in a more balanced, fairer world, where society has bridged the chasm between the privileged few and the poor so that everybody has a shot at a half-decent lifestyle. I hope that education will focus on academia and other life skills that are needed. It would be nice to think there will no longer be kids leaving school illiterate, that they will have at least basic skills around cooking, shopping, budgeting and, importantly, forming relationships with other people, being good neighbours when setting up home for themselves. I'd like to think there will come a time (in Britain at least but worldwide would be even better) where nobody goes hungry, where everybody has somewhere safe and decent to live and is able to access any services they need. If discrimination, poverty, violence could be left in the past so that people have more respect, a sense of self-worth and nobody has to live in fear it might make the world a nicer place to live. If young people learn to help each other, to bring each other up rather than put each other down, to be taught from an early age violence is unacceptable, to eradicate domestic violence or other hidden forms of abuse.
Even though I have next-to-nothing to leave I did write a will but it needs updating really. I don't currently have anything I could leave to CRUK but if my financial situation changes I would certainly consider a donation in my revised will. Both of my parents as well as friends, colleagues and acquaintances have had cancer and I'm acutely aware that most families will be touched by cancer at some stage so would be happy to support research into prevention, treatment and cures. I guess overall I just want future generations to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them or make things worse. I'd like them to be happy, content, confident, hardworking rounded decent human beings, good parents, friends, neighbours, colleagues, team-mates etc
