susiecb I too took up golf a couple of years ago and yes, its a great way to socialise, be in the fresh air, exercise and have fun. Oh but it can be frustrating! Good for you getting your handicap down! Everytime I believe I'm improving, some little niggling fault brings me back down again. My problem last week was 'topping'. Next week it will be something else!

I gave my clubs to my D-i-L, as my son said he wanted to teach her to play (don't think she's started yet). I gave up playing (badly) because of a problem with my shoulder. I had a good short game but couldn't get much power behind my fairway shots. I like to walk round with DH now and again. I think golf is a great game, but I'm taking up fly fishing this summer!

I really enjoy golf as i have said and our club recently had a recruitment drive with free lessons and reduced prices. As a result we have 12 more ladies and I have the great pleasure of taking one of them out for her first 9 holes on Tuesday. We have almost 400 men and only about 70-80 ladies.
I'm sorry to hear you are not able to play so much snookm but still enjoy the driving range and perhaps the 19th hole?

I notice that all the entries under golf are by ladies. Are there no men who play or who have played that use this wonderful website?
I've played golf since I was 17 and am now 82 so can't hit the ball properly any more but I enjoy the driving range where it doesn't matter how well or badly you hit it. I find hitting a golf ball is a bit like the Japanese shooting arrows from bows - it gets rid of something inside you which you want to get rid of. I'm not sure what it is but it does you good. Aggression perhaps?

Goldengran I am the worst golfer but its fun. I do hope you take it up again did you know you only have to do 9 hole qualifers now for handicap? Most clubs are so pleased to have lady members I dont think they mind how we play!smile

susiecb, it's not boring at all. I love it, but I haven't played for a couple of years. Reading your post has really made me want to take it up again, I was a terrible golfer but I made great friends an d we had fun.

crimson golf is great for social life but I dont take the game too seriously. Also should have mentioned lots of second hand golf gear on e-bay perfectly good to start off with after borrowing as much as you can.

Good idea. My neighbour is a mad keen golfer. I might ask her where she plays. Always tend to think of it as being expensive. My social life is non existant at the moment.

I know this sounds boring but read on. I took up golf a couple of years ago on retirement as a way to be outside and make new friends. It was less expensive than I had feared (you can spend a lot if you want but can also do it on a budget) but more difficult and never boring. It has taken me all this time to reduce my handicap (improve) but I have made good friends, played outside in all weathers, stayed mobile even though I have arthritis in my spine and most other places. Today I learnt I had improved by means of a new handicap certificate.

Not too many ladies play golf but those that do enjoy the wonderful friendships that build up. In our club there are ladies still playing in their 80s and they are very good. If its something you have ever thought about doing do try it. There is some grant money for free lessons for beginners so its worth finding out at your local club who will lend you all the equipment you need to start with. I recommend it for staying mobile and active.
