I've been saying for years that we won't win the World Cup again until David Beckham is England Team Manager! grin

Football players/managers/"scandals"/results/ clubs/ WAGs/inflated salaries.......
I am agog with indifference [bored] emoticon.

Wimbledon for me - I love that fortnight each year when I have an excuse to put my feet up and watch the matches, with bowl of strawberries and cream at hand. Although, I don't obsess about it - just catch up with the highlights if I'm going to be out in the afternoon x

JessM so glad it's not only me! Although I hate all football related stuff, not just that related to the England team.

To be honest, the only sport that I enjoy on a regular basis is horse racing, and even then I have a preference to the jumps pver the flat. Rugby international season might get my attention, but it depends what it clashes with. I also always start supporting Wales, in memory of my very Welsh grandmother, but then switch allegiance to England if Wales get knocked out!

I used to quite like tennis, but wasn't too bothered to watch Wimbledon last year.

Mr Phoenix is a cricket fan, but I can't say that I'm enamoured! Thank goodness we don't have Sky, so therefore his cricket viewing is limited. "Oh look, that section of paint is drying really well......................yawn"

Me too! I don't mind the odd international match, but the obsession with football is boring and gets in the way of making weekend arrangements for some members of my family - they live, breathe and eat football, and plan their weekends around it. We even had one wedding planned around certain football finals - it wouldn't have been a problem missing the live match on the day of the wedding, but he reasoned that their anniversary was bound to coincide with the final year after year, so he had to take that into account. Unbelievable!

Not at all phoenix I too get fed up with the obsession. And the fact that it is all about England. My buddy had a letter published in the Guardian the other day (his first ever) about the fact that its coverage of the rugby was so biased in favour of England.
I actually think it is very odd that the UK fields all these different teams in international soccer and then complains that England don't win. Too big for football boots?

This may be controversial, but here goes!

I hate, loathe and detest football! The players seem to be a load of extremely overpaid prima donnas.

The violence that has been displayed by "fans" in the name of this sport is abhorrent, disgusting and shameful.

What is that phrase about football / rugby? Something along the lines of a game played by hooligans and watched by gentlemen etc?

(Retreats and prepares for a roasting!)

We need someone who is relatively squeaky clean and can put his foot down. I think David Beckham is really sweet but not sure if he's got the authority to pull the likes of John Terry into line.

Harry Redknap is a fly-boy - full of flannel! I don't for one minute believe he is as naive as he reckons!

OK ...but do you really think, that for what is a part-time job ...anyone should be paid £6 million a year??

If we'd been in a position to earn £100,000 per annum for all our working life ...it would have taken us 60 years to earn what he did in a year!!

How many of us even earned £50,000 every year of our working life?? if we had it would take us 120 years to earn what he did in a year ...excuse me??

Where is the FA getting this sort of money from??

Yet again the media is pushing the wrong issue ...we must have many excellent football managers other than HR ...who with the owner, ran Portsmouth football club into the ground. confused

How come Cameron has time to put in his ten pence worth on this? Surely he has better things to do? Oh, I forgot, we're all in this together. Another PR opportunity?

Ariadne Fri 10-Feb-12 17:55:11

Exactly, kittylester!

kittylester Fri 10-Feb-12 17:42:58

My lot are all football fanatics and have loads to say about all this but I just think that David Beckham is sooooooo gorgeous that is all that counts winkblush

Ariadne Fri 10-Feb-12 17:35:32

Oh yes, DB is fairly inarticulate but he does it so sweetly.

JessM Fri 10-Feb-12 17:33:43

They couldn't could they? Really? Cringe.

tanith Fri 10-Feb-12 17:27:05

Loathe as I am to say this David Beckham is similarly inarticulate, but I guess we can put up with it because we won't really be listening to him much lol . I do think we should have an English manager for the England team.. but my hubby will do his nut if Harry R deserts his beloved Tottenham just as they are doing ok..

Ariadne Fri 10-Feb-12 17:18:06

Better than being an Ireland fan, eh? grin No, married to a Scot, I'm not mentioning rugby more that once a day.....

Seriously, though, what a load of nonsense it all is. I'm not that interested but it keeps cropping up on the news. The only comment I could make would be to ask why not ask David Beckham, then we'd at least have a lovely man to look at, rather than the grey and inarticulate assortment of the moment!

JessM Fri 10-Feb-12 17:04:10

Am I being unreasonable to think all this is an embarrassment to the English?
Captain of England in trouble - Fabio (and presumably Terry himself) fails to "get" that he needs to step aside until name cleared. hmm Then Fabio, continuing with the theme of not "getting" normal professional behaviour comes out in public to disagree with decision... hmm
Maybe the FA glad to see him go?
And then there is Harry R, getting off his tax charge. Boasting that he does not understand computers or money or even emails and immediately the British press hail him as the hero that will save the England team? hmm
So glad I am a Welsh Rugby supporter and not an English football supporter. grin
