Just seen an article about the Closing Ceremony. Now's our chance to plead for our case, namely that it is not ruined by ageing rock stars, wheezing their old hits and displaying their hair dyes!
_Here's my list of the banned_:
*Paul McCartney+
Elton John
Cliff Richard
Brian May
Tom Jones
Kylie
Madonna [as if]
_Exceptions to the above_:
Mick Jagger and the Stones
Shirley Bassey
Elvis Presley grin
Any others for either list?

But every time I felt like that, something amazing happened. Like, on Sunday I'd been working on the garden and came into the kitchen to make a cup of tea and jokingly said 'I suppose we've won another gold medal while I've been outside' and, d'y'knowwhat...WE HAD grin! It's been like winning the World Cup every day for two weeks.....

oh Lordy and now the analysis begins on the telly. Well I will have no trouble switching it off and going to bed to read..night all!

Hello, I'm new on here. I've had a quick read of this thread and would like to say I thought the Olympics were amazing. The opening and closing ceremonies were fantastic and the athletes made me very proud to be British. I do think it's nice to get back to normal though. It felt a little like force feeding towards the end.

I was hoping for Wuthering Heights.....crikey; just remembered the Pink Floyd bit as well. That was good. I thought it was McCartney doing backing vocals for Roger Daltrey at first [it wasn't was it?].

I love that Kate Bush song smile

I'm going mad! Misread crimson's post....confused

Ella46 Mon 13-Aug-12 21:49:08

Ana Kate Bush was a recording, Kate Moss was in a gold dress.

Yes the franglais made me smile too - we have an awful lot of people round here who speak french like that.

I loved the ceremony - even the Spice Girls smile but I was annoyed that Hazel Irvine and colleague talked over the two Elbow songs. Every time they spoke, the sound was faded and the lyrics of the Elbow songs were the ones MOST relevant to this unique sporting occasion. Ok ok I'm biased but my choir's musical director said the same thing tonight..and she's no slouch.wink

Re the ageing rock stars and their never ending egos, David Bowie has gone right up in my estimation, because apparently he turned down the request to appear live with "I've retired". grin (Source: Twitter). I like it when the material is given to the younger generation to perform e.g. Ed Sheeran singing Pinball Wizard ... that's the way to do it when your voice IS GONE! [thumbs up emoticon].

Anagram Mon 13-Aug-12 19:37:51

I thought it was a recorded Kate Bush song?

crimson Mon 13-Aug-12 19:36:20

Interesting that there does seem to have been something for everyone last night. Embarrassed as I was watching The Who I was amazed that Kate Moss was there [it was actually her, wasn't it?], and I loved Ray Davies [he never could sing but is probably one of our best songwriters from that era; the only group to have been banned from America, were The Kinks; thought of as far too subversive]. I didn't realise that some people were able to watch it on their telly in 3D. And I've realised that I Am the Walrus is probably my favourite ever Beatles song. Everyone I've spoken today have been--kna--very tired; don't know how I [or they] got through work this morning....

GoldenGran Mon 13-Aug-12 19:34:25

I was a bit grumpy about it last night, on another thread but think I was sad it's all over, I feel strangely bereft today, but I've noticed people are still jolly and happy . We need to keep that going somehow.flag

According to a news report, economists have calculated that it will - but not until 2021!

Charlotta Mon 13-Aug-12 19:05:13

Instead of watching the Closing Ceremony, I am now reading about it. So much more interesting. I knew there would be nothing for me. Now after 8 pages GN about it I'm glad I went to bed early with a book. I think the Queen may have done the same.
I'm glad the Olympics is over and hope that it will bring some prosperity to Britain after all that money spent.

Nonu Mon 13-Aug-12 18:52:24

The Who , what was that all about , he had a backing singer as he obviously not able to hold the notes , quite sad really

gracesmum Mon 13-Aug-12 18:46:19

The Who, George Michael, a very sad Ray Davies - oh momento mori!!
Given their age I thought "Talking About My Generation" was really quite funny -even ironic? Maybe they shouldbe called The Who?/Why? Do I Come Here Often?

choicestchard Mon 13-Aug-12 18:44:06

We can't blame all these ageing pop stars who probably jumped at the chance to polish their egos at one of the biggest UK events in many years, but I do blame those responsible for engaging them. Who on earth were they hoping to impress?
The athletes on the other hand were a sheer delight to watch; not just when they were competing, but afterwards when they were glowing with joy at having won a medal. After an event winners and losers had to run the gauntlet of being asked daft questions by sports interviewers but almost all did so with good grace and humour. So proud of them all - what wonderful role models for our children.

gracesmum Mon 13-Aug-12 18:42:18

If you listen again, you will hear that Harry was referred to as "Prince Henry (not i) de Galles", not du Pays de Galles as his Royal title is Prince Henry of Wales, and the Prince of Wales is also "Prince de Galles" not Prince du Pays de Galles
"Traditionnellement, le fils aîné du souverain britannique reçoit le titre de Prince de Galles."

Me too ninnyflag

ninnynanny Mon 13-Aug-12 17:20:01

Fantastic best olympics ever, opening ceremony and closing ceremony Britain doing what we do best. I am proud to be British flag

eGJ Mon 13-Aug-12 12:43:33

I think the Majesty they referred to last night was the Queen of Spain who has been supporting althletes in many disciplines. She was at the opening ceremony too. The best part of referring to Prince Henry (as he is properly titled) was in French! Prince Henri de Pay de Galles! flag

soop Mon 13-Aug-12 12:01:17

nanaeg High five! flag

nanaej Mon 13-Aug-12 11:44:38

Was he Henry because he was on official royal duty? Don't care at all, tbh, what they call him or what titles they use.... IMO it's all nonsense to worry about it. Nobody was intentionally rude just a bit muddled at the end of an exhausting but thrilling few weeks!

Daisyanswerdo Mon 13-Aug-12 11:38:52

Was there any traditional British music? If so, I missed it. I would have liked to see Gareth Malone too. Have to admit, I'm not a rock music fan. Loved the Eric Idle scene.

absentgrana Mon 13-Aug-12 10:01:45

Nope, his actual name is Henry but it was decided from the start that he would be known as Harry.
