Just seen an article about the Closing Ceremony. Now's our chance to plead for our case, namely that it is not ruined by ageing rock stars, wheezing their old hits and displaying their hair dyes!
_Here's my list of the banned_:
*Paul McCartney+
Elton John
Cliff Richard
Brian May
Tom Jones
Kylie
Madonna [as if]
_Exceptions to the above_:
Mick Jagger and the Stones
Shirley Bassey
Elvis Presley grin
Any others for either list?

Can anyone help? I have to be in London on Sunday for Monday grandchildren care. Daughter's TV is small and dodgy so thought I'd go somewhere to view the Closing Ceremony fireworks (I assume they'll have some). Can anyone recommend a good vantage point?

GadaboutGran Thu 09-Aug-12 21:13:17

.. or perhaps "Sailing By" especially if the boats are still waiting for a wind at Weymouth to sail.

YES!

If I could choose the most fitting piece of music to close the Games it would be The Band of the Royal Marines playing Sunset. flag

I for certainly DON"T ADORE most of them , think they are terribly OLD HAT, but guess the organisers think that"s what is required , Sigh, sigh

HildaW Thu 09-Aug-12 19:32:29

With all the talk about 'legacy' and inspiring the young it really should be up and coming folks..not the dear old hasbeens ( who we may well adore, but they are hardly representative of the future).

Nonu Thu 09-Aug-12 18:27:24

What I do hope though , is that there is a DVD made of both , I can then watch at my leisure flag

gracesmum Thu 09-Aug-12 18:14:51

No - tell!

specki4eyes Thu 09-Aug-12 18:09:28

ok harrigran will concede Tom Jones - you're right, he can belt em out and he doesn't dye his hair either. But hope you all know the story of what he does with his mouthwash? grin

JessM Thu 09-Aug-12 17:46:12

No! No! let him make gaffes!

AAAAAArgh not Kate Bush. Please, please. But at least she seems to have abandonde the awful falsetto knife on glass screeching... sets my teeth on edge

Remembering Boris's contribution to the Beijing closing ceremony, dare I hope that he loses his voice on Sunday?

Bellesnan Thu 09-Aug-12 17:06:19

Gosh - she must be nearly as old as me now wink

Annika Thu 09-Aug-12 17:00:55

Daughter-in-law went to see Madonna a few weeks ago. She has been a huge fan of hers ever since Madonna came on to the music scene in fact.

She told me her performance was terrible and it was not only her that thought so ,when leaving the show she heard many people remark that it was time Madonna called it a day and they would never go and see her again ! Looking forward to seeing her Sunday evening then !!!!!!! wink

Bellesnan Thu 09-Aug-12 16:55:07

Think you are right crimson. My s-i-l is in the Band of the Irish Guards and will be there with all the musicians of the Massed Bands of the Guards Division apart, I think, from the Coldstream who are on leave and I think Blur and Madness have been mentioned. They (the massed bands) are also on the opening of the Paralympics.

whitewave Thu 09-Aug-12 16:53:53

Fingers crossed that it will be as good as the opening ceremony, but honestly with the opening and the last 2 wonderful weeks it will be difficult not to be an anti-climax. Still we can take the rough with the smooth - anything rather than back to thinking about our sinking economy.

crimson Thu 09-Aug-12 16:27:06

I thought it was Blur and Muse?

Annobel Thu 09-Aug-12 16:26:41

If they have a contribution from Rio, I hope it's more inspiring than the London bus thing at the close of the Beijing games. Maybe a carnival atmosphere and a bit of samba. Can only hope.

gracesmum Thu 09-Aug-12 16:14:29

Too late if we don't want the ageing pop contingent. Macca and Elton definitely a zimmer frame too far. Is this the image we want- yesterday's men? Whaat happened to "Inspire a Generation"?

harrigran Thu 09-Aug-12 15:05:56

Oh no you're not susiecb I haven't had the television on for two weeks.
Tom Jones can still sing and in tune and I think he looks good for his age unlike Paul McCartney who is a joke.

susiecb Thu 09-Aug-12 15:01:39

Apparently we are getting Kate Bush who my husabnd adores - told me likes mad brunettes so thats fine I'm one. I do hope he doesnt plan for us to watch this I haven't recovered from the opening cermony but I will be glad to see that back of the olympics - yes I am the only woman in the country who is bored by it they are going to have me stuffed and put in a museum!

Nonu Thu 09-Aug-12 12:50:24

We"ll have to have 3 large [wines] to dull the pain .[cheesy grin]

Nonu Thu 09-Aug-12 12:48:07

Specki4eyes ,, Spice Girls ! or do u like , WHAT IS THIS rock amd roll hall of fame ???? This MAY deserve a flag

Anagram Thu 09-Aug-12 12:43:50

He's too bold by half already, specki! grin

Agree with your list, apart from Tom Jones who can at least still belt 'em out (and in tune).
