Is there one sporting event which had you really gripped

Apart from every time Wales won the Grand Slam , for me I think it’s the 2001 Wimbledon Final , Goran Ivanisevic v Pat Rafter

Rugby World Cup 2003. As it was in Australia we had to get up really early for all the matches but never missed one.
After each England game my younger son would ring me from whichever pub had been open to show it & we would have a good celebration.
After the final ( which I was so nervous about I watched the last 15 mins through the crack in the door) we were going mad & celebrating when he rang & we had the usual- love you Mum- What a result etc. conversation.
20 mins later the phone rang again & it was my son saying he was sorry not to ring before but could not get a signal on phone & long queue for the pay phone..
I still wonder who that man was I was speaking to & if his Mum gave him an earful for not ringing her!

When Rafa Nadal won his first Wimbledon title in 2008 against Federer, after he'd been beaten by Federer the year before. I shot out of my seat and yelled so hard after he won match point, that I gave my son the shock of his life and he burst into tears!

John Isner vs Nicolas Mahute. SO exciting. Longest Wimbledon match ever (over 11 hrs). I remember feeling sad someone had to win they fought so hard.

Isner lost in the next round I think as he was so exhausted but it was epic.

Milton winning the World Cup (twice).. What a horse!! Desert Orchid winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Handsome and brave.

Like others on here, I absolutely loved the 1966 World Cup Final and managed to persuade my Dad to take me to watch West Ham and the three World Cup stars when they played our local team. I spent the first 10 minutes supporting them and then switched to the home side because the atmosphere was so good. The rest, as they say is history - I have been a season ticket holder ever since and traveled all over the country (82 of the 92 FL League grounds) and in Europe supporting Burnley, taking my children and now the older grandchildren with me. I can't think of another 120 minutes that has has such an impact on my life.

I would also say the 2008 Wimbledon final with Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. One of the best tennis matches ever.

The final day of the Commonwealth games in Edinburgh in 1986. To be there with the whole family including my 80 year old mum made it a day I'll never forget. The queen was there too as it was the closing ceremony.

The only sport I ever watch is snooker. I hated it when I was young. Thought it was an 'Old person's thing' but then I started to watch Jimmy White and was hooked. Now I'm a Ronnie O'Sullivan fan and love to watch the Masters every year.

When England won the Rugby world cup. That drop goal that clinched it....I was jumping up and down. Another has to be when Torvil and Dean won the Olympic gold medal back in the early 80s.

In 2013, when Wigan Athletic (my local team) got through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup, my GS said, "If they get to the finals, will you take me to Wembley, Grandma?" "Of course I will," I glibly remarked, thinking, "No chance!"

Needless to say, I ended up spending a fortune on fares and tickets, still thinking "No chance that they will win against Manchester City. I just hope that they don't show Wigan up too badly!"

Well, Wigan defended, and defended, the score was 0 - 0, and a minute before full-time, with extra-time looming, Wigan scored from a corner.

I am not a great football fan, but I will never forget the explosion of emotion from the Wigan fans, and the dumbfounded silence from the City supporters.

A day I have never forgotten!

Not a famous one or World Cup but my late son playing in goal for his local team. Two same son taking 7 wickets with his local cricket team. Puffed up with pride.

The World Transplant Games..it is truly an inspirational occasion to see these men women and children take part ..well the first time I watched them I was reduced to tears and I defy anyone not to be moved.
And if you feel like being inspired and proud to be a human being, go to the World Transplant Games this it’s on Newcastle Gateshead....

I will never forget watching the 1985 World Snooker Championship final between Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor, a long long match that went on till the early hours. I'm not a great snooker fan but there was something about that particular game that had me hooked.

Rugby Union 1972 - Barbarians, an invitation team, v All Blacks.
[ All my fave Welsh players played in Barbarian's team] I was at college and sat on my friend's bed watching it on tiny black and white TV. So excited I kept banging my head on the overhanging bookshelf. Never felt any pain until next day. I have it now on DVD and sometimes late at night after a glass of wine too many, DH and I relive glory days. rugby dragon stdavids

Federer vs Nadal Wimbledon 2008 - so exciting!

Geraint Thomas winning last year's Tour de France.
Such an unassuming, modest chap. He had bad luck in previous races, crashing out or carrying injuries, helping Wiggins and Frome win, it was lovely to see him on the Champs Elysee. Such a gruelling race lasting three weeks. I love seeing the scenery/chateaux.

Andy Murray winning his first Wimbledon- best sporting moment ever!

Shizam Wed 06-Mar-19 19:48:47

Nick Skelton and Big Star winning individual gold medal for show jumping in Rio Olympics. Charlotte du Jardin winning dressage gold at London Olympics. Cried tears of joy for both!

When Northampton Saints won the rugby Premiership in 2014. The open top bus parade the next day was amazing. Got some great photos.
Oh, and Torvill and Dean winning Olympic gold with that perfect score (which has never been repeated).

Super Saturday at the 2012 Olympics for me too Ceri. I was at a friend's bday party and she asked if we'd mind just watching one race as she was interested - it ended with 30 of us all crammed into the room yelling and cheering at the telly for several hours grin

shysal Thu 07-Mar-19 14:07:15

I am not a great follower of sport, but Torville and Dean's Bolero is my favourite. It still moves me to tears.
