Has anybody been watching the football?

What, because we're disagreeing with some of your statements?

I don't know anyone bordering on depression because their team lost.
The quote I made was one of Bill Shankly, not my own.

No your constant reference to geography. What is it like today in Liverpool?

Quite a few threads mention geographical location - Mick’s GM thread, for one. Sometimes is is germane to what is being posted, sometimes it helps to give a fuller picture. Does anybody have a problem with that?
It’s not as if anybody is worried their anonymity is being compromised - look at Urmstongran, for instance!

^Girls and women watch -and indeed play football too^.

Yes, and very good they are too!

Yes, much much better too. My GD plays and many of my nieces. But they have been taught that it is a 'game', that your work hard to win, but it is OK to lose, and OK to admire the team who won.

As said, for some, football following just becomes too much, too serious, too everything, too far, too much.

I am not a football fan in any shape or form but every four years I barely miss watching a match, usually routing for the underdogs so I would like Croatia to win.

Yes, I was very sad when England lost but I was not crying. At the end of the day it is a football match.

Callistemon21 Sun 11-Dec-22 22:44:14

Well, England beat Wales 3-0, I should be sobbing into my brew

^I know several cases where it felt as though it had - from grand-father, to son and grand-sons. Real despair, anger, nightmares and more. Glad to hear this didn't happen with kids you know.^

Good heavens, no.
I'm sorry some of your friends are so upset about this.
Perhaps losing 6-1 is rather chastening, though.

Did you watch the faces of some on tv? For some, it was natural disappointment, and totally natural, For others it was much more than that, sadly

No but I'm not following it that closely, I suppose.
I'm interested, but not over-invested.

Oh stop it! This is getting pathetic and bordering on 'stalking'.

The score was 2 to 1, no? This is what we are talking about here.

Oh dear,I am glad to say nobody of my acquaintance has reacted in such a disproportionate way to a sporting result.
We must move in very different circles. .
Out of interest though why do you attribute these sentiments or indeed anything to do with football to male family members?

We should not teach them to put so much into nationalism and ball games! Ridiculous

Supporting one’s home team is not rampant nationalism but national pride - not the same thing.
Show me a millennium when little boys did not love kicking a ball around . Nothing wrong with ball games.

Absolutely NOTHING wrong at all. Did you read my last post?

Very fine line for some between national pride, and nationalism. When you see the angry, almost violence faces and expressions on chidlrens' faces, copied from dads and other adults. The swearing, insults, racism- from some, and the massive distress and 'Angst' - then you know it has gone too far.

I was commenting on one particular post.

Nobody’s world has come to an end, you need to resist the temptation of the straw man fallacy of raising a spurious argument with the aim of shooting it down.
C’est tout.

I don't even understand your comment, lol. Staw man fallacy/spurious argument/aim to shoot down. What? Pardon? LOL.

Oh dear, does it?

^The French game was dirty, and the umpire hopeless and inconsistent.^
Fair comment Fleurpepper and once the players get away with that sort of behaviour they will carry on doing it.

Yes, it was, I agree.

Now I'll support Croatia 🙂

Fleurpepper Sun 11-Dec-22 19:33:06

Thanks Joseanne, totally agree.

Which is why people should not suppot their team at all cost- but the best team, at the end of the day.

We were taught to train hard, play well but fair, but also, to accept that the best team should win.

Woke? Really? In the 50s and 60s?
