Shopping for bras

At the grand old age of 65 my darling husband (of 41 years) decided to treat me to some posh bras instead of the usual M&S jobs. So our first port of call was to Rigby and Peller. What a complete disaster! They tried to force me into a size 32 which I haven't been for the last 35 years, and I felt that I was being fitted by the Gestapo. The next day I returned the whole lot, as a protest to their dubious standards, and went down the road to La Perla to see what they would offer. This time they insisted that I was an E size ( which I have never been) and i returned those two bras today as they were too big an hour after wearing one of them. As they had no other bras in the shop to fit me they refunded my husband's money which is against their normal policy and we went back to M&S where we foUnd plenty of brass to choose from. Almost forgot to saythat La Perla tried to sell me a Much Used and clearly dirty bra, for £69! Rigby and Peller was noisy with much larking about by the staff that they hardly noticed that we had walked into the shop. Marks in contrast was helpful and reliable. So my advice is don't be tempted to go up Market, save your money and go to Marks. On the other hand, I wonder if anyone can recommend another good bra company.

Twobabes - the odd thing is that I am not particularly good at putting everything away. For several years, while the kids were small and we were living on one salary, I made do, as most of us did and we had to look carefully at how our income was spent. There wasn't cash to spare for fripperies like pretty matching underwear. Post-divorce, independent and earning a reasonable salary I decided to treat myself and since then it has become a harmless habit. In contrast to the Rigby and Peller customers, I don't necessarily spend a fortune. As long as a bra fits well I don't mind where I buy it - favourite one at the moment is from Sainsbury's! Cheaper ones don't last indefinitely but don't think that matters too much.

I don't have a wardrobe, just a rail with an old curtain lining flung over it to keep off the dust. I have found it trouble free and easy to move. I suppose it wouldn't suit a neat freak though. Too casual by far! grin We hang trousers on one of these: www.amazon.co.uk/Wooden-Rotating-Trousers-Hanger-pairs/dp/B003X8EW28

We have another one, with fewer rungs, in the bathroom, for towels.

Have just finished tidying undies drawer. All bras have matching knickers and are arranged from left to to right - white, through cream to pastels. Back row black and colours. Undies usually coordinate with outer clothes. Wardrobes arranged in colour-coded order. Have pretty non-slip extra-slim hangers and use Betterware's clever '6 hangers on one bracket' gadget which means you can squeeze a lot into a little space. When my children were little and I was a stay-at -home mum, a friend visited while I was pegging out washing - grouping colours together - and she said that proved I should be back at work!! On the other hand I can be very untidy and am not obsessed with dusting and hoovering.

Goldengirl..I intend to buy a set of 3 Ahhbras but the tops I wear are more or less the same but are longer and also control my tummy and hips !! They are ''Marilyn Munroe'' from TKMaxx. They do a lovely underwired slightly padded full top too which I wear for ''going out'' (not that I need padding )
I hardly ever get to shops so i usually shop on line (inc my groceries) but a trip up to Edinburgh to Ikea usually involves ''popping" into TKMaxx.

am feeling truly inferior now........but I do have a sort of system.....honest. The clothes I wear regularly i.e. this season's are in the wardrobe in my bedroom. The others are in another wardrobe in another room. Whilst the once in a blue-moon stuff is in the, as yet unfinished, second guest room. smile will that do?

greenmossgiel Fri 02-Sept-11 18:04:05

Don't do any of that - I'm a total mess!!! shockgrin

HildaW Triumph bras aren't like the Doreen nowadays, I have at least twenty and all are pretty. No I don't match briefs to bras.
Surely everybody has the hangers the same way, logical, if you don't they get all tangled. I hang clothes by colour and also stack jumpers by colour.

Just been looking at Marisota they have a good collection of bras and some of the styles go from 34 - 48 and various cup sizes B to L, I have not tried them but may be worth a look.

Triumph.......will never ever wear them. I suddenly devolped my chest at 16...almost over night was a 36c/d. The Triumph 'Doreen' bra was the only one that fitted when all my mates were in delicate little flower print jobs. So its put me off them for life especially with all those memories of being teased in the cahnging rooms at school. But at least I finally managed to ditch the vest. Mind you I'm pretty sure we were much later at going into bras in those days (late 60s) nowadays all 9 year olds seem to need them.

No my undies dont match.....I'm still a difficult fit being a 34GG/H so am pretty limited as to brand and style.

As for hangers being all the same way round.........er..............no..........but they are all the same brand, John Lewis!

Grumpyoldwoman Fri 02-Sept-11 17:29:20

Like you all my hangers are the same and must face the same way..I always remove empty hangers too.. I have my wardrobe colour co-ordinated ...but I must admit drawers are not quite so tidy !!

susiecb Fri 02-Sept-11 17:20:55

oops didnt mean to be so directive perhaps your not a Sweaty Betty like meblush.
Triumph - havent seen those for a while I used to love that brand.

Just to start another hare runnning - do you always have matching bra and knickers which not only match each other but are the same colour or near as damn it to your top clothing? I do so thats me OCD and a Sweaty Betty Mother would be proud of me if I get run over!

PS All my hangars are the same and face the same way in the wardrobe never have any clothes not hung up/put awaysmile

greenmossgiel Fri 02-Sept-11 16:14:56

susiecb Fri 02-Sept-11 15:49:54

Thank you I will look out for those.
yes bras you have worn must be washed daily if nothing else to restore the elasticity. Also nice to wash out the skin scales and sweat dont you think?

glammanana Fri 02-Sept-11 15:44:34

susiecb Fri 02-Sept-11 15:08:18

HildaW Fri 02-Sept-11 13:08:20

Gave up wearing white bras years ago. You have to wash them everyday!

susiecb Fri 02-Sept-11 09:13:02

Went to John Lewis yesterday looking for nice white frilly bra and knicks. the only white ones they had were already a strange shade of grey and nothing pretty - anyone seen anything that might fit the bill?

Grumpyoldwoman Thu 01-Sept-11 09:12:27

Folowing on from what I was saying about not being able to wear a bra...last night I couldn't sleep because my nose was streaming and I put TV on.....there was a 'Teleshopping' advert for 'AHH BRA' which is similar to what I wear (but mine cover my waist and bottom !!). Look very comfy though. smile
