Fig Fragrance

Diptyque" do a lovely one - the candles are called Figuier but the perfume is called Philosykos. Jo Malone also does a fig and cassis perfume. Both looooooooooovely!

A website is always useful. I do now recall being told that Jo Malone did fig and cassis - not too sure about the blackcurrant bit but I lurve Diptyque candles - used to have the odd mad splurge on them when I lived in Paris as they ain't cheap -and that they did Figuier candles but would never have found out that Philosykos is Figuier too

Couldn't resist quick peek at two fragrance suggestions. Hope to go for Phlosykos but WOW no expense spared is an understatement and really wonder whether buying it would be indulging myself too much. The price is even more stratospheric than I remembered. Only available from a few shops in London and I am in Newcastle upon Tyne so can't rush out and get my grubby little paws on it. Most sites in US and Beautyhabit.com (could be very addictive!) is a US dollar site too with high shipping costs I expect and in neither case an opportunity to try the fragrance on my skin. I usually try the tester, do my shopping, hope to get warmish and then see what it smells like on me.

Might be back to John Lewis for the room fragrance! And you think that I am joking. ............

I love the Jo Malone one -that's what I would buy as a treat any day. big department stores often stock her stuff. snailspeak are you OK now? Do hope so.

Hello snailspeak and welcome. Hope you are feeling better. Glad you managed to get your money back. My MIL (mother in law) was scammed on a Barclaycard and it too the full force of my SIL - a formidable woman who works in HR in banking - to get the £400 returned.

I think you should treat yourself if you can - you might not get the "carte blanche" to do so again for a while! The Jo Malone is lovely and the 30ml size not too bad for price. Mail order is post free I believe and a lot of the major stores like Selfridges or John Lewis stock her fragreances so you could try first. I bought DD's Christmas candle for the Marylebone High Street Diptyque shop and I agree - not easy to find outside London. (Plus - arm and a leg) But go on, be a devil!

Oh you naughty girls encouraging me to be so self-indulgent - moi? Cannot bring myself to spend £88 on a bottle of Philosykos or I'd feel guilty every time I used it or would put it in a prominent position for display purposes only . So I have made an executive decision just so that you all appreciate that I am quite bonkers. I am going to buy a £14 bottle of the room spray I mentioned after I have tried it again and if, as is likely, I make a huge mistake, at least the house will smell good. It is a White House product (Tuscan Fig Homespray) and they also do Cassis. I shall also sniff out the Jo Malone in John Lewis, Ariadne, but after Christmas as I have been reliably informed at the gym today (yes, I am back in action and thanks all for good wishes) that town is "hell". Is it only in Newcastle that people go on a huge seasonal overspend and all at the last minute when the shops are only effectively closed for one day?

Gracemum: You are definitely a woman after my own heart but apparently with longer pockets or is Christmas a good excuse for a spending spree? Treating hubby to a Dipthique candle indeed. Sounds a bit suspicious to me? It wouldn't be a crafty treat for yourself. Jess M: you are forgiven for being hopeless with perfumes - you save a lot of money that way and it was lovely to hear from both you and Ariadne.

I found another interesting perfume site but why are they all American? Anyway, it is <<nowsmellthis>> and is a blog about perfumes naturally. At the same time I came across a lot of bargain basement sites and cheap offers. Never used one. Are the products more often than not knock-offs and evil smelling fakes? My only encounter with fakes was when the French police confiscated a fake Hermes bag from me (lovely it was) at the Franco-Italian (Ventimiglia) border. They were stopping just about every car and grabbing stuff from just about everyone who was not in the know. They had a lorry loads of fakes. Gosh, all that money up in smoke. Do they really torch the goodies as they claim or do they land up in Paris street markets. Yes, I do know the French wily ways as I lived in France for some time and love haggling with dealers but Nice is my favourite market and we have some excellent souvenirs and bargains from there. We always get there early and split up for an hour then meet at a café to discuss our finds and I do Allan's haggling as he is not very good at it in English and his French only runs to menu reading and drink ordering at which he is surprisingly fluent. Bit more snooping around and then take the little train from the promenade that wends its way round all the narrow cobbled streets up into the hills where we picnic under the trees.

Phew. My husband calls it verbal diarrhoea so I'm off to put my feet up and watch the News and I think I deserve a nice for being so parsimonious although gracesmum's 'carte blanche' comment certainly made me think as it is probably very accurate.

Oh, did I say DH, I meant DD (littlest - she deserves it!) I love perfume - it creates a total mood for me - many years ago I was a very unhappu au pair in Germany, homesick and feeling a bit lost. On my afternoon off I sometimes went into town and one week I bought myself a bottle of perfume - can't remember what it was - but it just lifted my spirits and whenever I felt low, I would put some on a hanky (remember those?) and have a little sniff! My current favourites are Kiehl's Vanilla and Cedarwood, Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, and Diptyque Doson which was a sample when I bought the candle and I can feel myself weakening..............

A friend of mine cannot tolerate perfume on her skin but always uses the same fragrance and uses a very up-market room spray to waft around her wardrobe once a week with great success and no stale after-smells. That White House Tuscan Fig room spray is looking that little bit more appealing and I might get to keep the £74 I save at Dipthyque to play with, that is unless I take a liking to Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir which I was given a tester of a while back. What does Doson smell of or perhaps you should not tell me . Fortunately, I do know that you are only supposed to try a maximum of two fragrances in one day and for some reason not rub your wrists together when testing. Anyone know why as I certainly don't?

snailspeak: I have heard that you shouldn’t rub your wrists together because it cancels out the notes however I don’t believe this is not true. Rubbing your wrists cannot generate anywhere enough force to crush the atomic-sized molecules in the perfume. The only thing it could possibly do is to heat it up slightly.

However if you are superstitious then you can just dap instead of rubbing.

Don't like it. I bought a pack of several small Jo Malone to mix yourself on a flight with BA. I tried them a couple of times and now they're cluttering up my dressing table along with a lot of other small perfumes. I must have enough for 50years. Including CoCo by Chanel, Versace Versace, joy in. 100 ml.

USE IT up perfume does deterioate as soon as opened,

OH GOT ME some lovely Chanel NO.l 5 last xmas going to use it as treat most days!! had squirt in Boots other day of same and it lasted all day reckon was eau de parfum and mins is eau de toilette less strong.

Like Paris also, it is gentle non heavy scent.

Quite like Daisy but resisted it so far as have little grand daugher with that name who never seen!!
