Long grey hair

I like wearing my hair longish - and my biggest challenge is keeping the hairdressers from scalping me. It's as if they see a woman of a certain age, a good head of hair, and come over all glazed and go at it like Edwards Scissorshands. I constantly have to say "Please stop", usually when they bring out those funny thinning scissors with the square teeth.

So I constantly hop from hairdresser to hairdresser or salon to salon living in hope (not a good strategy either).

I know one or two women with long grey hair and to be honest they look like witches, but I suspect they do not spend time and effort on their hair.

I was on a Brittany Ferry crossing to Caen yesterday and on it was a lady with long immaculately groomed silver hair. She looked fabulous.

Not a fan of long grey straggly hair - at any age - Helen Mirren and Julie Waters have lovely grey hair styles. I love Mary Beard - her enthusiasm for her subject is wonderful. Just reading her latest book Pompeii - so I'll excuse her awful hair. Because it just doesn't matter.

Mine has been up and down like a yoyo over the years.
When DH died 10 years ago, my hair went very thin!
I had it cut and kept it short til now!
It's completely silver/white, now so I'm growing it again.
I do prefer it long and up.

Anno Iwas just reading that Helen Mirren was being photographed by her husband when the bikini shot was taken, so she had every possible bit of her sucked in!
I had my long hair cut very short when I left Art School. I thought 21 was too old for long hair. Took years to grow it again when I realised I was an idiot.

It's a question I tackled 18 months ago when I still had long 'blonde' hair. Even with thick hair, and a preference for it long, wearing it long and grey seemed impossible. I admired beautiful, long white hair in the Gudrun Sjoden range of clothes (a pity photos aren't an option, here); and the designer herself has long white hair, but it didn't feel right for me. So it was cut off short to allow the white to come through. Well, white in front and near black at the back. My landlord said, "Phew!" You look completely different - so much younger. Ah well, then...

"HER" hair.

My mum used to say any woman over forty should shouldn't wear their hair past the shoulders but never said why. However as I get older I can see that long straggly hair detracts from the woman beneath. Sadly in our society appearance means too much. A woman's ability and intelligence are dwarfed often by other women. In the newspapers it is often female journalists who are the most critical of other women, this I do not understand.

Going to look at those clips, Galen. I hate doing the old roots, Glamma, but it's too expensive to keep the grey away at the salon! When mine is white all over, I'm going to grow it out - if I can bear it!,

Gosh you lot are good! You're putting me to shame and making me feel I should make an effort. My hair is salt and pepper grey, and very determined to go it's own wavy way. So I just opt for an economy cut which I can just wash and leave until it gets too unruly again. I might think to brush it in the morning but often forget.

I agree Mary Beard is amazing but she seems to have my attitude to hair management which doesn't altogether work with so much hair. I just wish she would tie it back as I find it can be distracting.

I'm wearing one at the moment and have just ordered another. Thet hold much more hair than ordinary ones. I've ordered a gold one for evening wear!

Anno I don't think they were augmented, my hair is that thick and I've a friend with beautiful white hair, it's very thick and looks like one of the models.
I've just had mine cut shorter and layered and it looks much whiter!
I love it and can't wait for it to be white all over.

Re clips. I've just found some great ones. I found them on amazon. Rather expensive at £25-£35 pounds each. Made in France and the only ones that hold my hair.
If anyone is interested I'll try and find the name of the firm.

Surely that picture of Helen Mirren in a bikini must have been airbrushed! Where's the cellulite and the sagging tum? She just has no right to look that good!

I wish mine was as thick as those. Can you get silver extensions? Surely some of them had augmented styles. I refuse to call mine white or grey. Only silver will do. Now I must go and polish it!

Those women DO look fabulous - but they're all beautiful, and in the main, look like they've been coiffed and beautified for the photographs. I know that on me, with my home-made attempts at grooming - it really wouldn't work! #bringontheniceandeasy (see other post about hash tags!)

gally what we have to remember is that those models probably wake up in the morning looking nothing like their photo's they have some top stylist on call for every photo shoot,how very unfortunate for them eh? I wake up looking like "not to night josephine" and if washing then spend an hour drying the mop it takes ages.

Fabulous styles Baubles - my hair is now white and I'd love to have the courage to go short and layered again. I used to have very thick black hair so it was a bit of a shock to go 'negative' and it's no longer thick! Probably stick with the status quo - just below chin level and cut into the back. I had longer hair until about 3 years ago - looking at photos, I think it was a bad mistake

baubles some faulous cut's on there aren't there ? that is what makes all the differance I think a good cut and good shampoo and conditioner make for an easy life in my book.
