My Nanny used to hold her stockings up with threepenny bits. She would lift her skirt and give us a threepenny bit to get some sweets.

My sister's friend once, when going for a check with the Dr., sprayed her 'garden' with feminine deodorant. She had mistaken her daughter's glitter hair spray. Dr's comment "Thank you for making the effort!"

Another went for a smear and the nurse picked up a pair of tweezers and plucked a 1st class stamp from her 'bits' Goodness knows how it got there. The mind boggles.

The only person I have known to wear "panties" is my mother in law. Anything less like panties than the vast white cotton garments that adorn her nether regions would be hard to imagine. I presume there must have been a time when panties were daring and modern. Probably shortly after the days of the pink directoire knickers so beloved of my grandmother! I suspect that panties is an Americanism to distinguish undergarments from pants (trousers). I don't think I have ever actually described my knickers as panties, not least because it sounds so juvenile, but I'm not offended by the word.
