This week Kathy Morris gives an insight into her experience of hair loss, and its knock-on effects.

From trawling the internet to visiting every salon in her area, Kathy determinedly searched for a cure. Do add your own experiences, and of course, solutions, here.

Just twigged that Plantur has caffeine in it; I've seen adverts for mens shampoo with caffeine in. I'll get some and try it. I hate having showers instead of baths but when I do I sometimes mix shampoo with conditioner to save time [they used to sell shamppo with conditioner, not sure if they still do]. I'll try mixing some Argan oil with it next time. It appears that different makes of it have different smells; the one I have is the Holland and Barrett one, and it's very smelly. Thinking about caffeine in shampoo makes me wonder if people ever put cold tea on their hair [is it something my mum used to do; I know she used to put beer on it and sometimes something called 'bay rum'?].

KatyK Mon 25-Nov-13 18:49:44

Tegan - with my hair loss I tried cold tea! Someone told me montmorency cherry juice (to drink), or white wine vinegar (on scalp). I tried them all. Sadly for me nothing worked - it was alopecia in my case - no hope! I hope these things you are trying help you ladies smile

I know that when they first started promoting Plantur 39 in this country it was directed mainly at men, but then seemed to graduate to women also.

I am not sure as to whether mixing Argan oil with any ole shampoo and conditioner is going to have any other affect other than making your hair unbelievable soft and fly-away Tegan.
The Plantur shampoo is a very drying shampoo, so it goes well with the Argan oil, plus of course both have the ability to help stregthern hair other than just washing it! That combination makes sense to me, and having seen for myself how it can work I will definately include it in my regime as of now.
I dont think there will be many parts of me now that wont be being Argan Oiled!!!
I think you must be right that various types of AO have different smells! I get mine (its a French make) on line from FUn. Not necessarily the cheapest around, but also no where near the dearest.

Yes, they do still sell the combined shampoo and conditioners. Maybe not as popular as they used to be, but still many companies make it, so there must still be a market for it!

Bay rum is still available in some quarters and I do remember some men used to use it as a hair dressing.....not sure if it was ever used to promote growth tho'! I remember well people using 'beer rinses'. It was supposed to make your hair shine, apart from making you smell like a brewery!!

KatyK Mon 25-Nov-13 22:16:14

angie - I was tested for thyroid - negative result there for me.

out2grass Mon 25-Nov-13 22:21:10

Thanks Angiebaby for the tip of making one own silk pillow cases...certainly has to be cheaper than the cheapest to buy! I'm just rubbish with a needle and thread, but I just might have a friend!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I dye my hair too! Just hate the pepper and salt look........Just because we are old - there is nothing in the rule book that says we have to look it!!

Of course if we were as lucky as Tegan, and could go gloriously white! (little green devil raising its head here!) Now that is a colour that can look soooo fab on young and old and can look virtually ageless, if styled well.
Ah well, back to the tint bottle........blonde? why not!

Just a word of warning for anyone who may take up the suggestion of using the Plantur 39 shampoo with Argan Oil added!!! Be VERY careful as to how much oil you add......I have just slightly overdone it, I think by about 10 drops, and looking in the mirror I resemble a Bichon that has just come out of the doggie beauty parlour!! only without the 'Ah' factor. A fluff ball is the only way to descibe! soft and fly away being an understatement.
Will make sure I dont go over 3 drops, 4 at the most next time.....

Oh yes, on a positive note although there was some hair left around the drainer in my shower, it was minimal to what has been there in the past as was the hair in my comb. So I would think, this is most definitely worth perservering with.

out2grass Thu 28-Nov-13 12:29:19

News update on the Plantur shampoo with Argan Oil .....Just combed my hair into place, normally there would be quite a number of hairs in the comb, and in the sink over which I brush or comb (to catch the falling hair). Today there was literally TWO hairs in the comb! grin and it has settled down from being a puff-ball yesterday, to being easy to comb and style. Normally it would be tatty and dry, standing on end, and just a mess. Today, it is shiny and looks really healthy and reasonably, well not extactly thick! but 100% better than before....Cannot be bad, can it? I am thrilled to say the least.
It would be good to know if anyone else is trying this!

Nonu Thu 28-Nov-13 12:38:46

I also sleep on silk pillowslips, they are quite pricy but seem to do the trick of keeping hair smooth !!

Tegan Thu 28-Nov-13 13:22:51

Tried a different approach yesterday. Put lots of oil on my hair prior to washing then washed it in the shower. Also used some Weleda Phomollient on it afterwards. I've had the phomollient for ages along with all my other 'miracle cures' but didn't like it much [my hairdresser did think it was good]. Stopped my hair being so 'fly away' so think I'll carry on using it. Couldn't see any Plantur shampoo in Boots [although there was something similar]. Can't believe how upset I used to get about my hair years ago when it was sooo much better than it is now.I'm also not surrounded by hair [it was everywhere a few weeks ago] but it could just be the lack of stress due to finishing work and the fact it's not having a 'resting phase'. Definately getting a silk pillow. Trouble is, mentioned it to my daughter a couple of days ago so it might work it's way into any Christmas presents I might get. Had I mentioned it to my son it would definately be in my stocking on Christmas morning [he's amazing at storing up information about what people want as presents, even really obscure things like giving me a solar powered rainbow maker for the kitchen].

KatyK Thu 28-Nov-13 14:32:19

Tegan - I too can't believe I used to complain about my hair years ago, just because it wasn't as thick as some of my friends. I wish I had it now that my hair is practically non-existent. There may be a lesson in there somewhere.

Tegan Thu 28-Nov-13 14:54:16

It's like when we have a passport photo done and we're horrified ,then, ten years later we have the new one done [horiffied doubled], look at the old one and think 'I looked pretty good then didn't I'....I have a new plan and that is to wear chunkier earrings [I always wear quite delicate dangly ones] which I think will move the focal point away from my scalp wink.

KatyK Thu 28-Nov-13 15:29:43

Yes I agree with that Tegan. When I have my passport done I think oh no I look terrible then when I get the next one done I look back at the old one and think I wish I looked like that now ! smile

out2grass Fri 29-Nov-13 10:24:50

I know the Plantur shampoo is available on Boots website Tegan, but I get mine through Amazon - much cheaper, well slightly!

Good luck with the silk pillow! It really does help in keeping hair (and face) smooth.

Great idea about the chuncky earings! Distraction technique! A dear friend of mine who is no longer here, but had exteme problems with her thinning hair, had tried everything - internal and external! and finally started wearing 'Gypsey Rose Lee' type earings......No one saw her head or hair! Only her fab earings.

Tegan Fri 29-Nov-13 10:32:54

I've realised I've got a lovely silk scarf that someone gave me as a Christmas present that I've never actually worn; I may try that over my pillow for a couple of days and see what it's like.

out2grass Sat 30-Nov-13 10:23:13

Cant see why a silk scarf wont have the same affect as the silk pillowcase, but you would need to tether it somehow! Unless of course you are one of these folks whose head never moves from the second you lay it down!

Just thought of another idea! Depends on how large your scarf is, you could smooth your hair and actually put the scarf on your head. On second thoughts, maybe not. Cant see that being as comfy as actually laying on it, and comfy it really is.....for me, heaven is a silk pillowcase.

annsixty Sat 30-Nov-13 11:35:56

In the DT today Patra have an offer of two silk pillowcases for £52 for those of you interested.

out2grass Sat 30-Nov-13 13:03:46

Sure somone will leap at that good value. Mine come from Amazon at £13... two for £26!!!!!.ok so they are only silk on one side, but for me that is preferable as they dont slip around at all. They also wash beautifully.

out2grass Sat 30-Nov-13 13:10:51

Whoops! Sorry, just checked and I have been misleading you!!! They actually cost £13.99! Soooo, two for £27.98 and postage is free!!!

Won't your grandmother's hair grow back on its own, keith?

And why have you given us a link to a massage contraption? confused

I to have very thin hair it is an embarresment but at the moment I just try to ignore it. I do think of wigs but imagine they will be hot and uncomfortable. Also cheap ones look too thick and shiny and real hair need looking after like 'real hair' plus they don't
last if you wear them every day.

There is a stigma attached to wearing a wig yet if I were black it is considered the thing to do.

KatyK Thu 02-Jan-14 10:26:23

Don't mean to harp on but there are other solutions to wigs. As I have said many times on this thread I have a hair system which is attached to a fine mesh which looks like your scalp. My hair loss is very severe so this wouldn't suit everyone and is rather pricey, but it has changed my life considerably. I didn't know about these things until I had to find something to help me. I don't think the stigma exists so much now Over, with all the celebrities and whoever wearing wigs and extensions.

Nonu Thu 02-Jan-14 10:59:42

my SIL wears a wig , can hardly tell , it looks nice !
