Help! Have M and S stopped doing them?

My MIL, in her 80s, is a conservative dresser. She wears those loose t shirts, usually synthetic. Round neck. Plain fabric usually pastels. You know the sort of thing. She could do with a new one or two for her birthday.
They don't seem to have any of them on M and S web site. Have they turned their noses up at the over 80s? Or am I just looking in the wrong part of the website?

And what's more, so many of their basic items (e.g. formal trousers for work) are 'out of stock' if you give up with your local store and try online! Lots of larger sizes, but not so many for the long-tall-Sally type like me...angry

They have certainly lost the plot with their website. I can't understand that a company as big as M&S have a terrible website, hard to get on and off or move around in, crashes, freezes etc.

Have you tried Edinburgh Woollen Mill Jess? My mum used to love their stuff and the styles have hardly changed in years. Plenty of T shirts skirts and cardigans all in coordinating colours.
Cotton Traders is another suggestion, they advertise in the papers a lot.
I haven't bought anything in M&S for ages - they are just not stocking the kind of things I want. Back in the 80s I was always in M&S,now I think they've lost the plot.

Just been on the M&S website to see what the problems are. Not something I'll be doing again in a hurry!
I don't think some of these web designers have a clue.

I was about to suggest British Home Stores, they have some lovely things and M&S does seem to be veering away from their older customers, which is a shame.

So glad to hear others hate the new M&S website I have found it so frustrating to use, it has crashed several times and sometimes it has frozen and I can,t use the select button. I am moving house soon and have bought several things from the home section but it has almost been not worth the effort by the time I,ve got off the site I am exhausted!

With regards to the tops you have been looking for Jess have you tried Peacocks or British Home Stores?

I complained to Mand S about the new website and have received an e-mail from a company working "with them" with a questionnaire which asked for opinions.I filled it in very honestly,we shall see if it counts for anything.

I hate the new M and S web site too - it just isn't user-friendly like the old one was. I'd like to know who they tested it on - if anyone.

Grannylin Wed 02-Apr-14 08:46:16

Jess grin I know the feeling.I'm being stalked by a pair of walking shoes I looked at last week!

Aka Wed 02-Apr-14 08:22:35

Agree storynana the new website is awful. Can't find filter functions either.

Aka Wed 02-Apr-14 08:15:21

Big Brother perhaps watching you? wink

JessM Wed 02-Apr-14 07:24:12

I am now getting stalked by this top. Everywhere I go on the internet it is appearing on the screen in the advert boxes. They can take this internet marketing lark too far.

Sorry of course M and S in Llandudno proper.
I did locate 3 options on short sleeved plain tops in synthetic fabrics. Quick phone call established that back fastenings not required.
2 of the options were in Per Una which just goes to show that they are no longer aiming to get 20 year old customers. A white one, A white one with black bits on and - my final choice - a deep blue one on the classics range.
smile
I think the one on the model is pinned to make it look fitted. No idea why they think they need videos of the clothes hmm

And what on earth has happened on M and S new website. I can't get it to work properly.

Last summer I bought a number of M&S tee shirts with a scoop neck and almost-elbow length sleeves - was pleased to find that they washed well. There are some new colours this year and I will certainly add to my collection. Cotton Traders also had tops with elbow length sleeves. Have you considered Matalan?

Ana Tue 01-Apr-14 18:45:25

If they're not on the M&S website it does seem likely they've been discontinued!

glammanana Tue 01-Apr-14 18:35:58

phoenix I have looked for them in every M&S that I come across and can't find them sad I usually buy 3/4 a year as they wear so well with everything.

Anne58 Tue 01-Apr-14 18:09:41

Soutra I bet they didn't have the slightly longer sleeve that so many of us (well, me) prefer!

Ariadne Tue 01-Apr-14 17:44:51

Agree that Bon Marche T shirts ( and cardigans, and trousers and blouses and shirts etc.) tend to be embellished, but it's one of those shops that is always worth a look. Once you have ploughed past the polyester and beads, you can often find nice enough bits and pieces. I still have two big, heavy cotton over shirts from there that appear every summer. AND they do trousers in inside leg 25" inches, but you need to plough through (see above)

Ana Tue 01-Apr-14 16:22:05

There are no clothes shops at all in Llandudno Junction, Jess...hmm

Joelise Tue 01-Apr-14 16:16:30

Cotton Traders do cotton t shirts in all sizes, they wash very well. I like Landsend, who do a supima cotton & also modal t shirts, they aren't cheap though, at £19 95, but keep there shape & colour.

Soutra Tue 01-Apr-14 14:00:44

M&S £8 Woman basic t shirt got a good write up in Sunday's Telegraph
Stella magazine.

JessM Tue 01-Apr-14 07:41:12

Oh yes that is close. But I think i need to go to an actual shop. These look rather fitted compared to her usual style. Gotta go to the bright lights of Llandudno Junction today and there is nothing like eyeballing the item and feeling the fabric is there.
Difficult isn't it because a lot of the tops are very patterned at the moment and not necessarily to the taste of those of us who like plain (at any age).
Also noticeable that they have started catering for the larger woman. At one extreme you have the styles that suit the petite and athletic size 10s and at the other those that are styled to suit the buxom size 16+. If you are a small busted 12-14 with womanly hips you are in the wilderness

Is this the kind of thing you mean JessM? I bought one for my grandma only a few weeks ago.

Windsmoor a bit closer - and rather pricey for something that is going to be washed every wear. But this is jersey and i just want plain silky fabric.
