Any tips for discoloured crusty elbows. The most popular tip seems to be lemon juice but that hasn't worked, neither has slavering in moisturiser. I know it might seem trivial but I hate them!! Someone please come to the rescue.

Oh! I like the avocado skin idea! smile Not that I need it right now; my elbows are as soft and smooth as a baby's bum if you don't count the wrinkles when I straighten my arms.

Er, jings, I'm curious to know why you hate olive oil. I don't have strong feelings about it at all.

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter is great - cheap and a little goes a long way grin

I'm currently using Burts Bees hand cream on hands, feet and elbows. Wonderful stuff

I also use bio oil which is usually cheaper from Amazon. My daughter swears by coconut oil which is in the Holland and Barratt penny sale at the moment.

Jingl If you don't like olive oil, you could try using unrefined coconut oil instead. I use Coconoil, which comes in a large pot and you can use it for cooking as well!

Elizabeth Arden 8hour cream is good for heels, elbows, cuticles or any hard skin.....it was originally developed to treat horses hooves grin

Bio-oil seconded, it's very good. It does seem to help to remove some old skin, I bought it to help with some scarring so think it would work on elderly elbow skin.

I would use the Scholl rough skin remover meant for feet first, which would remove any rough skin, then apply the bio oil. Maybe every few days.

For those who love to eat avocados, save the skins. Sit with your elbows in the halved skins – not at the dinner table – and let the avocado oil work the magic.

Hello there, a good product is Bio-Oil, I don't know if its available there or not but it is marvelous for crinkly skin and elbows, it puts the moisture right back in instantly. It is similar in consistency to virgin olive oil. Give that a try, you don't need much. Bio-oil is the best. We get it at a chemist for about $20. I hope that helps you, all the best. Let me know how you go.

Since I've been using the Doublebase gel recommended for steroid-thinned skin, my elbows have been beautifully moisturised.

Have tried the lemon remedy on and off for years rosequartz but it makes no real difference. The irony is that I rarely go out in clothes without sleeves but I saw sight of my elbows in the bathroom mirror at thought they definitely need some tlc.

My elbows get some eczema so as well as lavish E45 ordinarily I need some hydrocortisone cream when it gets red and sore.

Charleygirl shock
A vision of you with your feet up on the table!!

Nelliemoser Sat 26-Jul-14 18:29:22

Charleygirl grin

Charleygirl Sat 26-Jul-14 18:25:44

Nellie is that why I have a lot of problems with my heels?!!!

rosequartz I have also heard that expression but I also have no idea where it came from.

rosequartz Sat 26-Jul-14 18:07:34

DD1 told me when she was a small girl that 'all joints on the table should be cooked - take them off'. Where or whom she got that from we will never know!

Agus Sat 26-Jul-14 16:36:53

GD2 asked me recently if my elbows were sore. When I asked her why she thought they were sore she replied, because they have big scars! As I never look at my elbows, when I did look, I fully understood why she thought that's what my wrinkly elbows could be!

Don't think any amout of oil and sugar would help in my case. grin

whenim64 Sat 26-Jul-14 15:24:51

Nellie you're right (my right elbow is scuffing up on my armchair right now). I have put my elbows on the table all my life and don't intend to stop.

shabby that tip with the oil and sugar works fast - a couple of days usually sees a big improvement.

Nelliemoser Sat 26-Jul-14 15:14:28

I find it hard to see my elbows so who cares?

You have got rough skin on your elbows because you didn't listen to your mothers when she told you to keep your elbows off the table.

It serves you all right! wink

rosequartz Sat 26-Jul-14 14:24:12

Lemon is supposed to help with the discolouring, shabby, how long did you try it? I heard that after you have squeezed a lemon put a half lemon on each elbow and lean on your elbows for a while (if you see what I mean).

Scrub vigorously with one of those net shower things, then moisturise. Aveeno is good, or perhaps try heel balm, I think Sanctuary do one which is quite thick and soothing but rubs in well.

Must have a look at mine - not easy!

ninathenana Sat 26-Jul-14 14:18:05

I have managed to soften and smooth mine by always using moisturising shower cream and rubbing them well with one of those nylon scrunchy things.
Will the olive oil mix stop them looking grey and dirty though ?

Ana Sat 26-Jul-14 14:14:14

Well, I didn't mean literally 'old'! smile

Galen Sat 26-Jul-14 14:12:14

Ah! (Nodding head wisely) that explains it.

Nelliemoser Sat 26-Jul-14 14:11:49

ANAbeware of using any "old" cooking oil I cooked some falafel, strained that oil to use again and put it in a jar.

After chopping some chillis I used a small amount of the falafel oil to wash off the chilli residue left on my hands. It removed the chilli but left a strong smell of garlic.

It's best to use fresh oil.
Chilli "heat" is oil based and really needs oil to get it off your hands, soap and water alone does not do it properly.
