Boatneck tops

I dislike boat necklines too, but also find most V necks and some scooped ones are too revealing. An exposed wrinkly cleavage is not sexy!
I sew up a couple of inches of the opening where possible, and I do have some of those safety pin tapes, bought recently on Ebay. but find them fiddly. I have sloping shoulders, and have to use self adhesine non-slip tape (a bargain in Lidl) under the straps of my shoulder bag and rucksack.
What with also wanting short sleeves to the elbow, choices are somewhat limited. I bought some long-sleeved Boden tops and cut off the lower part of the sleeves.

I must be very old fashioned as I still have the little gold safety pins and those press-stud things for use on dressy occasions when I don't want a lingerie malfunction.
My phone must think I'm a socialist today as it just changed mal to Mao shock (that is not a cue for this thread to degenerate into playground politics and a plethora of blue links BTW)
I think for casual wear a bit of bra showing is now acceptable. I have black bras and deep shocking pink ones for this very purpose smile

The bit you are previewing will be displayed above the box where you've just typed your message so just scroll down again and you'll be able to edit your post.

Don't forget to click 'post'. Quite a few times I've looked for a post I'm sure I typed but because I previewed it I forgot to send it! hmm

How can I preview and still put like when I meant little.

I've got a slippery shoulder too! Mine is the left one Lona, I hope yours gets better soon.

I used to use the like gold pin things, I think you can still get them. You can leave them in while the garment is washed but have to make the effort to put them in the first place which needs getting round to. grin

What I have done with my comfy old bras this year, because I don't like their dingy, greying straps showing under sun tops, is dye them all a pretty turquoise colour. It has worked very well. Cotton and nylon dye different shades but that looks deliberate and it has covered up the discolouration from sun cream too.

kittylester Wed 24-Jun-15 15:58:53

It worked for me.

I cant get the link to work Riverwalk. It shows the writing but not the picture. Not sure if it is just me.

TriciaF Wed 24-Jun-15 14:33:29

I can't wear them either. I bought a pink knitted cotton top recently with a boat neck. I stitched around the inside of the neck a few times with elastic thread.
It did lift the neckline a bit, but seemed to drag the sleeves up too. So the overall effect wasn't pleasant.
It's still languishing in a drawer, never worn.

Lona Wed 24-Jun-15 14:27:40

My right shoulder is 'frozen' at the moment and sticks up like a small boulder and still my tops slip off!
I know............... Let it Go grin

merlotgran Wed 24-Jun-15 13:20:23

I go for the balcony bra effect when I'm gardening. This is because when I've spent an hour or so yanking out nettles my boobs are hanging over the top!

merlotgran Wed 24-Jun-15 13:17:56

My favourite comfy old bras have now stretched so much in the wash they tell me I'm two sizes smaller than I actually am. grin

kittylester Wed 24-Jun-15 11:04:17

Thing is merlot, it could easily be a greying bra strap. grin And, even when it's a black one, it's not a sexy scrap of lace it's more like scaffolding.

Flipping heck Elegran, what makes you think I'm that organised. confused

merlotgran Wed 24-Jun-15 10:55:56

I love boat necks because I hate anything close to my neck (gives me a choking feeling). A bit of black bra strap showing looks OK with a casual look and I don't think they're supposed to stay straight are they?

They're great for layering but I'm not sure I'd wear one to a smart occasion.

kittylester Wed 24-Jun-15 10:47:24

That's definitely worth a thought River, thank you!

Elegran Wed 24-Jun-15 10:44:31

Many years ago we used to hold the bra straps to the shoulder seams with a couple of gold safety pins. The non-sharp side of the pins was sewn to the seam, so that you just had to slip the strap inside and fasten the pin. You could also get little bits of ribbon with press studs, to sew to the seams and fasten round the strap.

Those tapes they sew inside tops, presumably to keep the wide necks from slipping off coat hangers, can also be cut in half and tied round the straps.

All this needs doing when you get dressed, of course, and before you find yourself out in public, hitching up your neckline every two minutes.

Kitty do you have vest/cami tops with wider shoulder bits?

I find them very useful for wearing under shirts and loose-necked tunics - they hide the bra strap and look nice. I have a number of them from Gap, M&S, etc in white and various colours.

Uniglo have some very thin ones, which don't add bulk!

The fashion now seems to be deliberately slipping off one shoulder. And what about the leaning over to pick something up? We had a temporary teacher at my co-ed secondary school for a few weeks. The girls all thought she did it on purpose. We didn't ask the boys what they thought............

kittylester Wed 24-Jun-15 09:35:04

Not just me then!

Lona, I've got a lovely loose knit jumper that I have to keep 'utching' up.

It might be sexy soutra if it wasn't for the fact that my bra straps are industrial strength. grin

I really love them Teetime but they drive me nuts!

Oh, dear! That top was in the sale too, think about how much money I might have saved by buying it! grin

Meercat Wed 24-Jun-15 09:11:22

I can't cope with boat necks either. They won't stay straight and end up slipping off one shoulder. I spend all my time hoicking them back into place

Teetime Wed 24-Jun-15 08:49:33

I love a boat neck especially Joules stripy tops- very sailorish. They are very flattering kitty.

annodomini Wed 24-Jun-15 08:43:01

I have slippery shoulders. But boat necks don't suit me anyway. I go for V-necks.

Soutra Wed 24-Jun-15 08:23:45

Meant to be sexy, you minx you!!grin

Lona Wed 24-Jun-15 08:21:59

kitty, everything slips off my right shoulder! I don't know why either, but it's very annoying!

kittylester Wed 24-Jun-15 08:18:16

I've seen a lovely top on Phase 8 but it has a boatneck and I don't cope well with those! They always slip off one shoulder showing a sturdy bra strap.

Have I got odd shoulders or does it happen to everyone? Is there trick that no one has told me about?
