Can anyone 'out there' tell me how to wear a summer scarf please?

A few months ago my DD bought me a lovely floaty cotton scarf-thing about 6' long and 3' wide. It is in a delicate shade of turquiose subtly patterned with butterflies.

I tried it this way and that, folded, draped and every which way including up, but it never looked right so I hung it decoratively over the handlebars of my exercise bike. I know she's offended I've never worn it.

Today my DDiL appeared with a present for me - a floaty, cotton scarf about 6'x3' in a beautiful shade of blue, lightly patterned with butterflies.

Now I have two lovely scarves I don't know how to wear and probsbly two offended people when they don't see me wearing them sad

Please advise.

Lots of great suggestions but it's the round the neck bit that will never look right on me, especially in summer. I don't even suit round necked tops so go for 'V' or boat necks.

However I have come up with a solution smile

In another thread I said I was looking for a floaty summer top. Well never did find one, but DiL was wearing a lovely one the other day and she pointed put it was just two rectangular pieces of material, hemmed, sewn across the 'shoulders' (top) but leaving room for head and then sewn, bat-wing style, under the 'arms' (sides)

Guess who is now the owner of a floaty top made (in 20 minutes) from DiL's scarf? It's very flattering and as DiL gave me the idea in the first place she's happy smile

I drape mine across the end of the plain bedding on the spare bed. It looks very chic (unhelpful). grin

Here is how I styled mine....... Place whole scarf around your shoulders , take one end firmly and tie it to the other end, now swing it around to one side, twist tightly and tie another knot.Pull to other side, because it looks wrong, panic a bit as it won't come off over the head, unravel whole thing and sling it on the floor, leave the room, cursing.

Anya, my DDiL bought me the same scarf as yours bought for you!The year before my DD bought me a similar one in Pink. Now, I do wear scarves, but just not those really huge ones, so they hang in the wardrobe. They are really wraps, but unless you are wearing a plain solid colour dress, in which case you could drape one around yourself, they are useless.

Have any of you ever looked on Pinterest for ideas on how to tie your scarves? It's a great source of ideas for all sorts of things, you just type in what you want to look at in the box at the top and up come lots of different ideas from other pinners. The topics are endless, but a word of warning...the site is very addictive!

The pirate costume's very intriguing Anya.
Loose and low (ish) Think necklace not scarf. Only works with soft fabric which drapes well. But I did laugh at the mental image of a starched tablecloth.

I have some lovely scarves but I cant bear them in summer they are just too sweaty and hot to bear. Winter is a different matter I wear lots of different scarves with different outfits.

Take your long scarf and roll it and then drape it accordingly around your neck or just enjoy wearing a floaty scarf loosely. I love these summer scarves over light tops.

Fold it in two, put the double thickness round the neck, pull the ends through. Voila!

Thank you very much for the two links - really opened my eyes.

I love scarves and have loads of them. It makes such a difference to the appearance of old outfits and they keep my neck warm. I mainly use the cowl neck and the simple loop as in the video link. When I got a bit too warm the other week, I just unravelled my scarf and left it hanging down either side of my long cardi, which still looked quite good.

If it is floaty enough, how about folding it as narrow as possible and tying it round a wide brimmed sun hat like a hat band, just let the ends float down your back.
Get a nice photo on a sunny day and forward it to the relevant parties.

Rats, I meant smile

I love my chiffon scarves. But remember you only need to wear the relevant scarf once or twice in front of the donor to let yourself off the hook if you really can't get on with them. There's another video here Pick one and just go for it! (And post a photo, I bet you look better in it than you think) (smile)

I too struggled with long chiffon type scarves until I hit on the idea of joining the ends. This makes a circle or snood which can be wrapped (draped!!) around the neck. You can have one level shorter or both the same length and it fits snuggly under a jacket .
p.s I thinkthis only works with long rectangles not square scarves

I was given really little helpful book on tying scarfs. RHS publication. Maybe an ideal gift idea for some of you ladies who have friends struggling about £10? Good Luck!

You tie a knot in your arms?

You can see I'm not very good at following instructions grin

Anya Mon 06-Jul-15 23:11:45

My thoughts exactly Treebee.

But...I have developed a style that might work. You drape it, fully opened, over your shoulders like a wrap, then let the two ends drape down your arms. Now tie a knot at the end of each arm, and then slide the resulting sleeve up to just under the elbow. It's a sort of cross between a wrap and a floaty bolero top.

Might wear it / them like this in the garden to start with.

Great little video. My current favourite way is the effortless classic way , but I agree, the summer is no time to wear one.
Strange how you were bought 2 scarves so similar when you don't usually wear one Anya.
I always feel once a gift is given it's completely up to the recipient what they do with it. I have no qualms about re gifting !

I'm a short necked person with eczema so any scarf that isn't cotton brings my eczema up like mad.

I love all the floaty scarfs that are in fashion just now but what with the short neck and the eczema I just admire other people.

Also in the hot weather scarfs can make you even hotter.

Have you got a helpful friend?
I rush to the most stylish ones for their help. They are more than happy to show me.
That way they can work with your body shape.

Anya Mon 06-Jul-15 07:18:04

I will keep trying and yes, the scarves are lovely. It's not them, it's me, I just look silly in them sad

J52 Mon 06-Jul-15 07:10:51

I have just caught up with this thread, and would suggest the same as * Janerowena*.

The scarves sound lovely.

Anya - have you tried wikihow? I don't think there is much on there they won't show you how to do. Just pop wikihowtowearascarf into Google.
