Skinny jeans

Absentdaughter and I both wear jeans a lot of the time. I have about 12 pairs of boot-cut jeans from Next that are not yet worn out. She wears a variety of different styles and, indeed different colours. (Mine are all "denim blue" even if they contain a small percentage of elastane.)

This afternoon I was doing absentdaughter's ironing. Don't tell me off – it's one of things I do to help her with her six children to make life a bit easier. I actually hate ironing. Anyway, I thought I might try on one of her pairs of skinny jeans and see what I look like.

We are both about 5 feet 9 inches tall, but she had a baby nearly three months ago so she is currently a size 12. I wear a size 8 but I think I am really a size 6; however, I am past that bit where you lie flat on the floor and pull up the zip with a bootlace threaded through the puller.

I thought her jeans looked quite nice on me – I have to say that my legs are my one good physical quality, still dancer's legs; everything else about me is pretty much rubbish. So I asked Mr absent what he thought. WRONG! He didn't even look before dismissing the idea with a bit of force, telling me that he has never liked skinny jeans and they just look like tights.

I think I shall stroll over to Richmond Mall tomorrow and buy a couple of pairs. How long before he notices?

Oh definitely go for the skinnies Absent you will look amazing with that lovely figure of yours envy.

To hell with Mr Absent. If you feel good in them that's all that counts. As others have said skinnies are far more versatile than boot cut as they look great with ballet pumps, trainers, flat short boots or longer boots.

who knows we might get you in leggings yet grin

I'm looking forward to having the option of skinny jeans - ie when I've lost another 12kg. I may or may not take that option!

Im a size 18 and I wear leggings all the time, my weight is around my middle and my legs are quite slim so as long as I wear a longish top I feel ok. If I lose weight is is always from my legs. Im looking of for a pair of skinny jeans at the minute probably will end up with jeggings though. As long as theyre comfortable I don't really mind. Im not a dress and tights person.

Skinny jeans are practically a uniform for me. I love them with ballet flats, loafers or boots, wouldn't be without them however I could not abide them in hot weather. I've been in Greece for a few weeks now in 30 degree heat and have seen young ones wearing jeans in the day time, I've no idea how they do it, must be genetic.

Totally agree Lupin - at 68 I would wear skinny jeans if I was tall and slim but as I'm sort and on the tubby side they look wroooong and are very uncomfortable.

It's not the age but the figure type. Anyone who can should as far as skinny jeans are concerned. If I tried it - being a classic apple - I'd look like an old style penny balancing on cocktail sticks. One that's gone green with age and envy. As for shoes - I like the look - on others (gnash, gnash) - with ballet flats or long boots.

I have the same problem as the scarf lady with a generous sized bosom. But my legs are quite skinny, so I have to be very careful how I put an outfit together so that I don't look ridiculous, like an upside-down triangle. Being rotund with skinny legs means that I can wear skinny jeans easily, but need a long top to go over them so that it hangs down well over my bust, and balances out the pipe-cleaner legs. However, I do wear skinny jeans a lot in the winter, and shorts in the summer. I take the view that if people don't like what they see, they don't have to look. I just the way God made me. I am 67.

Well done absent!

Firstly, I apologise to absentdaughter who is a size 10 not a size 12. What on earth would be the point of my trying on skinny jeans that are two sizes too large? Anyway – I have done it. In fact, I have bought two pairs because they were "on special". The family is coming to lunch tomorrow so I shall get the verdict then!

P.s. I like them.

Falconbird Sat 11-Jul-15 07:00:05

Never liked skinny jeans even when I was skinny. I find them very stiff and uncomfortable. I think they only suit certain body types and mine was never one of them.

Marelli Fri 10-Jul-15 20:59:39

My legs are long - but nowhere near as long as absent's! I also have a 14-16 bum blush. I wear my skinny jeans with boots in the winter and with sandals or pumps in the better weather. Always with a very long top, though!

Granne72 Fri 10-Jul-15 20:45:30

I have just had to remove my trousers for GN's so I can now reliably inform you that they are 'Gap high rise skinny'. Really comfy , come to my waist , slightly stretchy and look good (i think) with ballet pumps or canvas lace up pumps. In winter i wear them with boots.
Always wear a long top with them as legs reasonable, hips not my best bit.

Ana Fri 10-Jul-15 20:35:29

Don't you need a bum to do the Max Wall Walk? Size 6 implies that you haven't got much of one, absent!

glassortwo Fri 10-Jul-15 20:33:37

Is that before or after a glass of wine grin

absent Fri 10-Jul-15 20:25:12

Thanks glass. Mind you, I can do the Max Wall walk if necessary.

glassortwo Fri 10-Jul-15 20:07:31

absent go for it you have great long legs, and there is not n inch of fat on you. I am great deal shorter than you and a great deal wider and I love my skinny jeans grin

2 brief comments - 1) I LOVE H and M and 2) why do women ask the man in their life what they think when it comes to clothes and, even worse, take notice of what they say? Please have confidence and go with what YOU feel good in.

Probably by the time all us grans are wearing skinny jeans they won't be fashionable any more. I have just bought a jumpsuit. It's really comfortable but a bit of a drag when you want to go to the loo....
