Hair conditioning

I used quite a lot of heated hair appliances to do my hair and think that I need a quick (or over night) conditioning treatment as my hair appears quite dry.

To save me trawling through Boots or Superdrug do you have a recommendations please ?

I might try those almond wipes Stansgran. Putting the L'Oreal oil in my hair, as suggested by another Gransnetter has made a great difference to the feel of my hair.

I too am on the same amount of thyroxin but still have dry patches all on my neck and round my collar bone.

Stansgran Wed 26-Aug-15 21:06:21

Just to say I take 150mcg thyroxin but still have dry skin although no problems with my hair. I use age perfect almond oil skin wipes in the morning as I feel that's when in need the moisturising. Especially my ears! They flake and it's horrid.

damaged hair requires moisturizing and rich with vitamin formula conditioner

Thank you NanKate,
Went back to the doctor, because face went sceptic, gave me antibiotic cream to put on it,It's much better now, still red and itchy, but not painful. He told me it takes three weeks to clear.

Coconut oil,I rub it in evening before washing.
I take 100ml thyroxine too.Im 5'6" and 10stones so not too bad.
A question tho,I've had a grade two breast cancer, but for the second time,I've got a Basill cell?(think that's right) it's a non cancerous skin blemish, caused by too much sun.But I've had to put a chemotherapy cream on them (5 of them) my face is a unsightly mess and so painful it makes my eyes water.Has anyone else had this, how long will it take to clear?

Jan I am just as bad. About one in 20 of my purchases does what it says in the tin. The hair oil is one of them and the Instyler hair appliance.

As my daughter says, 'Mother, you are an ad-man's dream!'. Anything new comes on the market, hair or skin wise, and I'm there!.
However, as regards hair products, I have now simplified my products.
My hair is high lighted but all I use now is an Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner and instead of mousse or any other styling product I just use 2 small pumps of pure Argan Oil. My hair condition has improved so much. Having said that I still use my Gel Wax and 'Freeze and Shine' to finish!

No Roses I am glued to my IPad. It's my piece of technology of choice. Having said that I do love a good book.

Go out the door! anyone else sick of their iPad.

rosesarered Fri 14-Aug-15 14:08:52

Tegan grin
A magnifying mirror is a must when you get older. always check it before you go out, the. You can check if you have put dark green eye liner on your eyebrows by mistake!

Tegan Fri 14-Aug-15 13:22:38

I use Elizabeth Arden brow shaper and eyeliner which fills in the gaps. Mind you, I've just checked it in the magnifying mirror shock and noticed a lot of facial hair that I didn't know I had sad#notlookinginthatmirroragain

First of all Jane my solution to the eyebrow problem is that I buy from Superdrug a cheap eye shadow and brush in my missing brows and they look fine.

I so sympathise over the weight gain. I managed to lose 3 stone and have, until recently, kept my weight down. Then my Dr said I was on too high a dose of thyroxin and reduced me from 150 mcg per day to 100 mcg which caused weight gain and me sleeping for hours on end. I persuaded her to put me back on 150 mcg and I feel better but the weight is not falling off. I like you changed nothing in my diet or exercise pattern. Sorry I can't be more helpful on this topic.

janeainsworth Fri 14-Aug-15 12:17:45

Yes I have vanishing eyebrow syndrome too Nankate. Applying vaseline to them makes them look a bit better but I don't think has resulted in any regrowth sad

Just as an aside, (non-hypothyroids need not read) I have just had a bit of a contretemps with my thyroxine. 9 months ago GP & I decided to reduce dose from 100mcg to 75mcg after blood tests consistently showed very low TSH levels.

Since then I have put on 3 kg shock without eating differently or reducing amount of exercise. Just had another blood test which shows TSH levels much higher, which dr agrees is cause of weight gain, so I have gone back on to 100mcg, and am hoping the extra kgs will come off as easily as they went on. I was surprised what a difference the dose could make and how quickly sad

Jane I have an under active thyroid too hence my dry complexion, hair etc, oh also some of my eyebrow is bare on one side due to the condition. Anyway this oil appears to have replaced the oil I no longer have naturally in my hair which is a result in my book.

Wasn't it ridiculous years ago all the things we were told not to do, such as not washing our hair when we had a period and not cutting our nails on a Sunday. I wish I had been a bit more rebellious and ignored these warnings.

Tegan Fri 14-Aug-15 09:34:27

I used to rinse my hair in very cold water after washing till I chickened out of doing it, but since I've been going to the gym/sauna I've been going straight into the cold shower in the hope that it helps my hair grow a bit better. Not sure about my hair#beyondhelp but my skin feels great.

janeainsworth Fri 14-Aug-15 08:48:49

I don't know Nankate!
I always had greasy hair when I was younger and used to feel very self-conscious about it. In an era when we were told it was 'unhealthy' to wash your hair more than once a week, I used to feel guilty for washing mine twice a week shock
In later years when I had to look presentable at work I washed it alternate days and sometimes every day.
10 years ago I became hypothyroid & hair got thin & lifeless.

I've used argan oil for about a year & improvement is visible. I think the spray-on oils are better than the little bottles of oil. I also massage my scalp twice a day following a tip from Tegan.

I think the fact that it doesn't make your hair look greasy must be to do with the chemical composition of the oil. I use an olive oil facial cleanser and once in a senior moment put that on my hair by mistake. Hair looked horrible, lank and greasy, and I had to wash it straight away.

Now I wash my hair every 5 - 6 days and washing it more often seems to make it limp and with no body.

Teetime Fri 14-Aug-15 08:44:57

Oh good glad my recommendations worked for you. I have read in several places now that only washing with conditioner is recommended to control frizzyness and dryness ( a once a week only shampoo is what is being said). Aveda apparently are the first to come up with a Con-wash preparation apparently expensive as all Aveda is but other will follow- I might experiment with my Frizz Ease conditioner.

Nelliemoser Fri 14-Aug-15 07:31:26

Every one's hair is differently textured so it isn't likely that one product works for all types.
Like Pheonix's non waterproof cat.
I might try the olive oil trick.

NanKate Fri 14-Aug-15 07:03:43

It's interesting Jane how the oil can make the hair feel thicker without making it greasy. This beauty aid will become a firm favourite with me.

janeainsworth Thu 13-Aug-15 22:30:48

I've been using Moroccan Argan oil (spray on to wet or dry hair) for a few months now & my hair seems thicker and shinier.

NanKate Thu 13-Aug-15 20:23:07

Thanks Teetime I have bought the Elvive hair oil you mentioned and it is proving great. My hair looks shiny and is not so flyaway. flowers

NanKate Tue 11-Aug-15 17:09:50

Thanks All for your suggestions. Been and raided Superdrug today and will start sloshing different conditioners on tomorrow and will report back. flowers

Eloethan Mon 10-Aug-15 10:17:10

I use Aussie Conditioner for Colour treated hair. I've tried many others but always go back to this one as it really suits my hair and gives it body. I suppose, though, what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another so you just have to try a few to see what you like.

Alea Mon 10-Aug-15 09:58:32

Moroccan oil is good.
