Thanks for all your tips - much appreciated. I will have a chat to skinny hairdresser next week. I'm hoping no base colour will make it all less itchy, less time consuming and less expensive. grin

jing and seacliff - sorry about the disappointment of 'grey days'. I have to agree with you, the days are indeed all very grey at the moment.

me too Jingle - it certainly is a grey day here.

I would try no base colour at all, just three/four highlight colours, which is what I do, it looks natural, I only have it done twice a year.

Anyone else think this was going to be a thread abut the weather/mood? Quite disappointed really. Could do with a good moan.

I bit the bullet a few months ago, lightened the remaining dark bits and let the existing light ash highlights and new silver/grey growth blend together as the white grows through.
Very pleased with the result. Worth planning it with your hairdresser though to avoid white roots (not a good look) if the present colour is a dark one.
There are various articles in magazines (w&h) and online, as well as a few threads on GN. Good luck.

Naturally,I was very dark, almost black,so when my hair grew back after chemo, obviously it was mostly grey,I let it go for a while, then I started putting pure blond streaks in.Now I got a bit more blond, and yes,it suits me.Very easy to do too. Will put a photo if you like.My freind used to say,oh no,you can't go blond. But me being me.

Thanks, roses. My base is a sort of mid blonde but I'm still wondering if that could be an irritant?

rosesarered Fri 23-Oct-15 15:14:06

If the base colour is dark, dark hair dye is a known irritant.Either go for a light brown base plus highlights or just a mix of highlight colours.

For years I've been having a base colour on my hair plus a few highlights. For about the same number of years I have had an itchy scalp and a friend told me recently that the itchy scalp is caused by the base colour.

Has anyone any experience of this and what would my hair look like if I just had the highlights and let the grey show through elsewhere?
