Would you wear this?

In the GN feature on knee-length dresses, is this the best M&S example they could come up with? It looks so unflattering! I don't possess a dress, but if I needed one it wouldn't look like this!

The only dress I have is for summer - red with a small pattern in white. It's retro style, '50s. V neck, buttons down the front with a fitted waist, short sleeves and a full skirt.
I bought it at a 2nd hand stall in the local market for about 20€.

Somebody said it would be the last thing she would wear and it looks like the last things -ready for the coffin perhaps.

But to be honest I did wear a long black woollen dress at 21 but I was slim and had auburn hair in those days. I often dressed down to make my hair noticable but now its grey and whispy and then and then........ hopeless.
Shows how M&S think, anything will do for the old ladies!

It's a bit Jane Eyre, imho. It would be down to the floor on me, but probably looks better on.

It could look good at a funeral.confused

Poor Galen ?

A dress with sleeves is very constricting - if I was wearing that I'd be dying to rip it off and wear something less suffocating. I've given up on dresses completely, anyway, but I don't see anything stylish in this one at all either.

A bad photo but it looks very dull and safe.

On a personal level, I never wear anything with a clearly defined waist because in waisted outfits, even though I am not over weight, the answer to the question 'Does my bum look big in this?' is always 'yes' and I have the photos to prove it.

The word slouchy says it all. But then I don't really do dresses and certainly not knee length. Yesterday I was wearing the lovely Wallis dress I bought in a charity shop - geometric abstract pattern of brown, white, black, yellow and turquoise, with a mid calf handkerchief hem.

I have two dresses for summer, one is a £15 maxi dress I've had for 6 years and the other is a linen sundress I bought on ebay!

It doesn't have a single redeeming feature

I don't do dresses unless with leggings. So I really wear them as a long top. My last buy was a Masai dress/long top for £30 in the sale......I so love it.

The one in the pic is too high up around the neck for me. Wouldn't break my stride to check it out.
However if it was on display and styled with accessories it might look more attractive.

It will be in the Gunwharf outlet store next year! I can usually predict the non sellers.

Greyduster I also immediately thought of Mrs Danvers! grin

It's very drab.

I tend to find that if it looks good on the hanger it'll look lousy on me. If it doesn't look great on the hanger but there's something appealing about its fabric/colour/styling it may well be good on the body (ie I don't have a figure like a clothes-hanger). You're right Synonymous, if it's really well cut it can look great whatever the fabric. Masai fall into this camp for me (hopefully grabbed at sale price).

hildajenniJ Mon 28-Mar-16 12:25:29

It's not my style or colour. I have never owned a black dress. I showed it to Mr hjj, he just pulled a face when I asked him if it would suit me! I need a couple of dresses, but not this one.

TerriBull Mon 28-Mar-16 12:16:01

Not exactly "the little black dress" more like a dreary black sack hmm

tanith Mon 28-Mar-16 11:50:25

Not in a month of Sundays.. its very drab and dull.

Galen Mon 28-Mar-16 11:47:11

Noto of course ( well cultured)

Kittye Mon 28-Mar-16 11:43:17

Looks as dull as dishwater.

Synonymous Mon 28-Mar-16 11:40:17

Nothing that is designed to have a body inside it looks great on it's own but as others have said it is how you accessorise it. The cut is hugely important too and when you slip on something that is well cut you just 'know' and it can make you look stunning - in spite of one's self and all the flaws. tbublush
I would have to try it on to know and many times I have been pleasantly surprised by something which looks uninspiring.

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 11:35:21

Galen! Apologies, I bet you look great in it. Are they real pearls?

suzied Mon 28-Mar-16 11:30:37

I love wearing dresses and make ( and buy ) a lot. But this looks like it would maybe look better with a nice wide leather belt, chunky jewellery and knee high boots , maybe a long sleeve coordinating t shirt underneath. In other words, it's a bit dull but could be dressed up. That picture wouldn't entice me to try it.

Teetime Mon 28-Mar-16 11:28:53

Its rather drab isn't it?

Greyduster Mon 28-Mar-16 11:28:47

Looks like something Mrs Danvers would wear when she was prowling around Manderley!!

rosesarered Mon 28-Mar-16 11:27:45

Most dresses look a bit sad on the hanger, but when worn ( and who wears it makes a big difference) can look stunning. So I reserve judgement.
