No more t-shirts?

I was watching a dept. store clothing consultant on tv giving hints on how to dress to look younger and thinner when over 50. She said we shouldn't wear t-shirts but tops with interests and v neck when possible. Use Blazers often and be careful with prints because they can scream old woman. I think she is right about the cotton t shirts I've gone through my closet and purged them.I may save a few for home wear and gardening. I have summer blouses I can wear I'll just have to get the iron out!

I can't say I give a fig about what anyone else thinks. I'm 62, I frequently wear crazy colours in my now naturally white hair (and have had more than 1 compliment from strangers about it!) and I adore "in your face" colours and patterns in my jeans, tops , jewellery, shoes and bags. Why should I turn into a boring cardboard character when inside I still feel young?

I suppose the problem is that we are all different and ready made clothes tend to be all the same! Maybe I should pluck up the courage to get out my sewing machine again.

I do agree with littlefierce that we shouldn't worry too much about being "age appropriate, though.

How to dress age appropriately: wear clothes.

Baby - I can't find blazers or other jackets to cover my bum - the current fashion is much too short, I think, drawing attention to the bit I want to hide. I agree with you re T shirts, but I think I'd rather look like a tent than a barrel.blush

I agree that it was good when you could choose the length of M&S T shirts. It seems to be assumed that those of us who are broad in the beam want long tops to cover the bulges. Actually, that just makes us look bigger. M&S used to do tops that would just reach to the top of the hip bone (above the bulge!) which was more flattering. Manufacturers please note that larger women don't want to look like tents!

Need to say that whomever said should of is incorrect, should have is correct, sorry Not bothered about looking thin just comfy
so jeans and t shirts will continue together with leather jacket would look silly on bike in a blazer.

It occurred to me today that, though I have about half a dozen tee shirts, the only time I wear them is under an open shirt. I have a thing about collars - got a have them. I wear a lot of cotton shirts and polo shirts. Tees and even a crew neck sweater without anything under it make me feel very "exposed". There are some nice tops in the shops at the moment, but so many of them have scoop necks, so they're not for me, sadly.

Blame the chest of drawers Stillhere. Mine does the exact same thing to my clothes, as does my wardrobe, especially during the winter. Come spring everything that hasn't been out for six months or more has mysteriously shrunk! grin

When Nannylovesshopping mentioned slash necked t-shirts I had a flashback to the 60's remember making slashnecks out of new terry nappies!!! Did I really do that!!!!!!

Coolgran65 Thu 07-Apr-16 19:06:10

I like the T shirt fabric, love a V or scoop neck, must have a reasonable sleeve....... but it's the body length. Most T shirts are just too short.

1974cookie Thu 07-Apr-16 18:26:55

I have no plans to ditch my T-shirts just yet. I find that fitted V necks ( not too low though) are more flattering than round neck which I find have a tendency to make your boobs look as if they are heading south once we are past our youth, and oh boy, I left my youth behind quite a while ago !!!!!!
I have several V necks in all sorts of bright jewel like colours. I usually wear them with a plain black pencil skirt. I have a couple of pretty M+S embroidered short jackets from years ago ( in the days when M+S sold clothing worth having ) that I co-ordinate the T shirt with, or I choose a plainer jacket so that the colour of the T shirt speaks for itself. I am very lucky in that I have very good friends who would tell me immediately if my T-shirt days were over.
My advice would be to keep well away from any with Logos or fancy patterns. Keep them simple and just carry on enjoying wearing them.

Pish. I wear what's comfortable and what I think suits me. I also don't give a damn if someone thinks I'm an old woman. I am one. Not very old but definitely old; Minibags says so. She has one friend whose mother is a tiny bit older than me but I'm older than some of her friends' grannies.

granjura Thu 07-Apr-16 17:47:20

I shall wear what I want - and certainly not take any notice if fashion gurus lol!

nanaGill Thu 07-Apr-16 16:03:56

I love my T shirts - preferably V necked and short sleeves. It seems to be increasingly difficult to get them in decent fabric and interesting colours though.

MadMaisie Thu 07-Apr-16 16:02:41

T shirts all the way for me, but in plain colours. I too can't do with glittery bits, pictures or slogans and after seven years of wearing a blazer at school I have no intention of ever putting one on again.

Mumsyface Thu 07-Apr-16 14:36:51

When I occasionally see those pretentious, patronising and horribly over painted women on TV rattling on about "age appropriate" clothing I hear myself hurling abuse at them.....and then I hear a little voice say "granny!" Oops!

ninathenana Thu 07-Apr-16 12:55:20

I will not stop wearing T-shirts.
I have one or two 'posher' tops but several Tees in all sorts of colours. I have never worn blouses as am small busted but have a large waist so they either fit bust or middle. I'm definitely not a fan of the "pulled button look" with flesh showing when I sit down grin Or on men with beer bellies either grin
I do have a black jacket ? blazer for evening but prefer a cardi

Victoria08 Thu 07-Apr-16 12:11:39

Any t shirts or tops with three quarter length sleeves, I find annoying.
When it's chilly, you want coverage.
If it's hot, I wear short sleeves.

NotTooOld Thu 07-Apr-16 11:36:53

Nanny - I think I saw some in MnS yesterday - slashed neck t-shirts, that is.

Tizliz Thu 07-Apr-16 11:30:05

knowsley reminds me of a group of lads that came on Dragons Den with a cycling clothing range called FLAB - fat lad at back, that is what they call the cyclist at the back of the group. The Dragons thought it was insulting not funny, but I see they are now in business.

cathyd Thu 07-Apr-16 11:22:42

I threw out my round neck t shirts years ago, but only because I felt I couldn't breath in them. I always wear v neck t shirts or an occasional scoop neck, either plain for around the house or beaded/patterned for going out. I only wear a (white) blouse for funerals ( it was bought umpteen years ago for an interview)so rarely used.

goose1964 Thu 07-Apr-16 11:15:06

So she wants us to dress like Mary Berry? No thanks . I have rather generous boobs & to get a blouse that fits at the front it is huge on the back & if the back fits the front won't do up or gapes, no -one is getting me out of my t-shirts

Babyboomer Thu 07-Apr-16 11:07:58

I really wish it was easier to get plain white tops and blouses that don't look like either school uniform shirts or sportswear, and don't have logos or fussy detailing. A plain white top (with whatever neckline you prefer) in a good quality fabric is so useful with a variety of outfits. At the moment white T shirts tend to be the nearest thing you can get on the high street.

shelana Thu 07-Apr-16 10:50:16

Tee shirts with horizontal stripes are OK-perhaps not so much on large busts.Vnecks are good at making the top half look taller but a floaty scarf can do this as well.Logos and girly designs look a bit silly on mature ladies--but at the end of the day make your own style and people will love you for it!The young may not notice you but they will only smile benignly
if they do!
