I was at an event last night and I notice several women wearing light cotton dresses with black leggings and a cartigan. i don't wear dresses often because I don't find tights comfortable. Do any of you wear dresses and leggings?

I wear leggings with l-o-n-g tops so my bottom is covered. Either long ones or, if it's warm, crop ones. But never worn them with a dress, however reading this thread I have decided to give it a go.

They shouldn't bag at the knees, no. I've got chunky legs too and buy my real size. I'd go for a 14 if I were you.

Thanks gettingonabit, I was thinking denim blue, as I have a vintage Clarks handbag and sandals in that colour.
Another question: do leggings go baggy at the knees during wear? My legs are chunky, so should I go for 14 or 16?

gettingonabit Tue 17-May-16 10:00:42

shysal I think leggings would go well with that dress, personally (but that's just me).

I'd go for denim blue and cropped.

I haven't worn a dress or skirt since I retired 9 years ago. I am soon to celebrate my 70th birthday at afternoon tea, so dug this forgotten unworn sale dress from the back of the wardrobe. It fits well but barely covers my knees, which are fat and wrinkly. I have a crochet shrug to cover my upper arms. Would it look OK with leggings? I feel the heat so they would have to be 3/4 and lightweight. If so, what colour? The dress is coral, denim blue and white. I am size 14, only 5'3" and will wear flat sandals. Any tips would be most welcome.

I think leggings look OK under thigh length/above the knee dresses though I don't wear them. I can't see why you would wear them under mid calf dresses, I wear pop socks with longer dresses/skirts. I've only worn leggings under trousers when it is very cold, they make a good extra layer. leggings rarely look good with short tops, even on slim women, unless they are very young. I find it hard to find long tops I like, and am wary even of wearing jeggings or skinny jeans too much without a long enough top.

Would've posted a photo but can't work out how to do it from my kindle fire. Lucky you lot! ?

I was at an event yesterday where there was supposed to be a dress code. I specially went shopping to comply with this. I bought a nice little retro, colour block dress and wore black tights and black shoes. I received compliments ? HOWEVER it's a good job I shopped in BHS closing down sale and spent next to nothing because, to my fury, many people totally flouted the much trumpeted dress code and wore jeans, t shirts etc. The fact that my feet were killing me didn't help! BUT the black tights were good (M&S) and leggings wouldn't have done at all. My dress is sleeveless and my arms haven't seen the light of day all winter so are pretty pasty. I can definitely recommend M&S gradual tan. It's excellent! (I don't work for them!)

The worst sight I ever saw was a lady wearing flesh coloured leggings at an outdoor concert. She stood on a chair in front of me and I got a wonderful view of every varicose vein and every lump of cellulite on what looked like naked legs!

Bijou Sun 08-May-16 21:05:28

I have never worn leggings. Are they like tights but without feet? If so what do you wear on your feet? Are they bulky round your bottom?
I wear thick tights in the winter, thinner ones when it is warmer and go bare legs in the summer.

grannybuy Sun 08-May-16 20:07:43

Can't help thinking they are for 'the young'. Might wear them to an exercise class, or in the garden, but not as a going out outfit. I am slim, and would pass for a teenager from behind,(only). Lots of other things to wear instead, with a dress. Self tanned legs in summer, tights in winter. Personal taste, obviously.

PS ankle ones look best.

I would look like Max Wall

I think it's a nod back to the eighties (the decade, that is...)

I remember a dress I had under which I wore bright green leggings...back in the day.

Linsco56 Sun 08-May-16 15:47:47

I have worn leggings with a dress (slightly above the knee) and a pair of flat pump shoes when working around the house and garden. I think I would feel a bit self conscious wearing them on a trip into town. I have seen a neighbour of mine wear leggings well with a dress but although she's about 70 she is is perfect size 8 and had funky stylish short hair and a bubbly personality...she just carries it off well! So...I think it very much depends on the person. grin

I wear my leggings UNDER my jeans. Lovely and warm in Orkney! I do struggle with the sight of the see-through variety, Carole 2512, and wonder if they realise and should I mention it ! I remember debating with my daughter some years ago whether to tell a girl her thong was exposed high above the waist of her jeans. We decided that there was an outside possibility it could be a fashion statement. Turns out we were right

tanith Sun 08-May-16 10:28:21

I'm in my shorts as soon as the sun comes out and have a light tan all the time as it never seems to completely fade in the Winter , legs and feet look so much better with a light tan. I find long dresses make me look shorter than ever that's if I could ever find a long dress that doesn't need a foot taken off the bottom before I could even walk in it.

NotTooOld Sun 08-May-16 10:13:32

But GrannyMosh, don't you feel the need to get the sun on your legs? Not just for the tan but also for the vitamin D? I don't think we get enough sun on our bodies.

GrannyMosh Sun 08-May-16 09:48:18

Neither! In mild weather, I wear ankle-length cotton kaftans and leather mules. Cool, comfortable, colourful and elegant, can be dressed up or down, and they hide a multitude of sins.

carole2512 Sun 08-May-16 09:27:20

I love my leggings, and always have black ones. I did once have a patterned pair, blue and white, but I felt it made my thighs look huge. I don't really wear a dress with my leggings, but most of my tops are quite long and reach mid-thigh. I wouldn't wear them as a dress with tights though. The worst sight I ever saw was a schoolgirl with very sheer black leggings - you could see the colour of her legs through the fabric, and her tiny little thong, which was red showed through - not very pretty sad

Theoddbird Sun 08-May-16 09:22:00

I wear hold up stockings with skirts and dresses. I detest tights...so uncomfortable. If leggings are worn with skirts or dresses they really should match the colour for a complete outfit and never with high heels. Just my opinion of course.

Newquay Sun 08-May-16 08:38:45

My v stylish DD told me a while ago that no one over the age of 12 should wear leggings-not that I ever have?

Faye Sat 07-May-16 23:45:30

I wear full length jeggings mainly black under tunic or above the knee dresses, in summer I wear 3/4 slim fitting pants with cuffs with long tops, dresses with short sleeves and sleeveless dresses and occasionally a short top. I also have longer not so slim fitting 4/5 pants I only wear with shorter tops. If it was a mid calf dress and in summer I wouldn't wear leggings/jeggings etc underneath mainly because it would be too hot but I think it could look okay. If I am riding my bike I wear leggings with a tshirt, I think they look fine under dresses and long tops but don't seem to wear them myself. I wear flat shoes.

Marelli Sat 07-May-16 23:16:08

I wear leggings under a dress. Usually length of dress would be slightly above the knee, though. Flat shoes and bare feet.

NotTooOld Sat 07-May-16 22:54:31

I really like the look of leggings under a dress but do you then have to have bare feet in your shoes?
