The past few days I've been noticing what other women are wearing: amongst the hundreds of women I've seen on the South coast while I've been travelling there have only been three wearing skirts or dresses, all the rest have been in shorts, leggings or trousers. Has the skirt had its day?

Skirts look nice while one wears it. It gives an elegant look. Long skirts along with crop tops look good.

I wore a dress the other day and both DGC said ".you look nice Granma ! " But I was hobbling in my sandles as not enough support for my dodgy ankle so back to the trousers again with a lace up sadly .....

janeainsworth and Granof11 - yes I might order it. It's made of cotton, which is good, because most of the cheap dresses are made of polyester.
I just think there must be some catch, it's so cheap. Probably comes from China! We'll see.

I like to wear skits in summer but this year it's been difficult getting something pretty which is short enough for me. I've been to M&S twice but no luck at allsad

Granof11 Sun 10-Jul-16 15:33:11

Hi TriciaF - just looked at that navy dress. It's gorgeous and such a bargain. Go for it. I would.

Summers are usually very hot where I live so I quite often wear skirts or dresses as they are cooler than the jeans I live in during the winter and even shorts, cut-offs, cargo pants etc. Also – although don't tell anyone else – I can wear them without knickers and without discomfort! grin

I actually have a decent pair of pins but I havent worn skirts or dresses for as long as i can remember I m not sure why i just feel far more comfortable in jeans, cut offs shorts or casual wear i cant wear heels any more and feel really dumpy and old fashioned in a skirt without heels If I am going out for the evening I still wear smart pants in fact i dont own any dresses or skirts and havent for years So for me they re a past creation

Have just been with my granddaughter to get her new school uniform which includes a lovely pleated kilt skirt, just above the knee. Lovely for skinny schoolgirls but I do wonder how it will sit on the traditionally built (of any age). Having a thick waist, I feel trussed-up in a skirt unless it is one of those pull-on jersey wool jobs, put with a long top.

I only ever wear trousers to the Gym. Long skirts, short skirts, even my new passion 50s circular skirts.. they all seem much more comfortable to me. And as for wearing trousers on a flight - yuck and double yuck !!

Regalo Fri 08-Jul-16 21:56:53

Oh nooooo.....I live in skirts and sun dresses in summer. I hate trousers as I feel too porky in them..although I do wear jeans. Mid calf skirts are my thing..hides the legs! I try to avoid tights for as long as possible until I really get cold.

Grannyknot Fri 08-Jul-16 21:39:20

I've a couple of calf length skirts made out of T-shirt type material that I live in as soon as the weather allows, they have a broad band at the top that folds (doubles) over thereby providing a comfy, but fairly tight fit. Hope that makes sense.

Always used to wear jeans & trousers but gave up a couple of years ago & now much prefer dresses - never skirts & tops which tend to emphasise a slighter rounder midriff! I've discovered Bombshell & Damsel in a dress this year & am in love with both companies but also love my old favourite Masai.

Moocow Fri 08-Jul-16 20:51:52

Love skirts especially in hot weather. Jeans are practical but whenever I can I get out if them sharpish! Feel bound and that they show off my fat more than a nice skirt.

Calypso8 Fri 08-Jul-16 20:22:48

I only ever wear skirts , long and floaty , love Per Una and Monsoon , great for covering my fat legs ! Never wear trousers or shorts ?

Sheilasue Fri 08-Jul-16 20:10:12

I wear trousers because I have thread veins and I am very conscious of them, I wear shorts indoors in the warm weather but wouldn't go out in them I have one skirt for summer which Is long. I have two skirts for the winter which I wear with thick black tights.

Jalima Fri 08-Jul-16 20:07:04

I would like a few slim linen shifts in good colours.

However, first of all I need to have a slim silhoutte hmm

Jalima Fri 08-Jul-16 20:05:36

You suggest wearing a pair of cycle shorts under a floaty dress
petra have you seen all the slebs wearing those hold-you-in shorts etc under their designer dresses?
grin

Marmight Fri 08-Jul-16 19:59:15

I wear trousers/jeans 99.9% of the time because I just feel comfortable like that; however I recently, on impulse, bought a soft cotton, fairly full, blue and white striped skirt which reaches well below my knees and am finding I actually feel good in it. In the warm weather (what's that I hear you ask) it is much more comfortable than close fitting trousers and now I have stopped wearing shorts, having seen a photo of myself shockI think I may have been converted and am actively looking for a second one.......

GandTea Fri 08-Jul-16 18:54:09

Galen, I couldn't wouldn't be good for your blood pressure. smile

ninathenana, Mrs P bought her first pair of high heels for years (for dancing) took her a while to get used to them again, but she looks smashing in them. As for me, can you get them in size 12 ? (Please don't say yes)

J52 Yes, just hairy Locks in kilts, doesn't work for me.

petra Fri 08-Jul-16 18:04:25

caramac Have I read that correctly? You suggest wearing a pair of cycle shorts under a floaty dress.

Caramac Fri 08-Jul-16 17:26:16

I wear dresses for work and shorts as often as possible on days off. Dresses are simple as I'm useless at putting stuff together. I've got good legs a massive bust and a thick waist. I'm short too. I didn't dare wear shorts until a couple of years ago but love them now Thigh rub problems can be solved with slick stuff runners use or tights like bicycle shorts sold by Evans and other places. Both work with floaty dresses.
