At what age should we stop....?!

Just read about this ridiculous survey on the Huffington Pos which suggests at what age women should cut their hair, stop wearing skinny jeans, give up on technology etc etc!!! The whole article is actually ridiculing the survey but it got me thinking - do I actually think there is a cut off age for us? Rapidly approaching 60, I certainly don't feel ready to give up on anything I wear or enjoy doing, and nor do any of my similarly aged friends! My daughters and granddaughters love that I'm youthful in outlook and style and my youngest daughter is delighted to be able to borrow my clothes. How do Gransnetters feel about this?

OK, so my phone is a damn sight smarter than me, but otherwise I don't think there is a cut-off point where you can't wear or do what you want - there is a huge advantage in being GN age-group that we don't have to ask for anyone's permission to do anything or not do anything. If other people don't like it . . . tuff! My life, my choice.

If we all want to wear what we like and expect not to be judged, then are we best off not judging others?

I'm 71 going on 35 ! I wear whatever pleases me each day. Some times I feel I need to be conservative and wear what I call sensible clothes. Other days I wear trendy or even hippy type garb. Thank goodness for charity shops as they enable me to have an extensive wardrobe at very little cost ! I just love colour and luckily can still get away with sometimes quite extrovert stuff!
The only problem I have now is that dreaded middle aged spread! I am 5'9 and reasonably slim except for that tummy which has appeared from nowhere and has to be accommodated ! Thank goodness for tunic tops !

I love looking at what others wear and as far as I'm concerned, the worst thing you can do is wear clothes that are too tight. I'm sure some women are obsessed by their clothes size and refuse to buy the next size up even if they look daft.

I've been plus size for years, but I have always made sure I wear the correct size - even if I don't particularly suit what I'm wearing! grin

You're a lovely lot! As I expected, like me you all feel we should be whoever we want to be, do what we want and wear what we want for as long as we possibly can. So long as we don't frighten the horses! It was just a bit of nonsense that I stumbled over and thought you might enjoy discussing. Loved your comments - thanks all!

If you don't care what anyone thinks, you can black yer ass and go naked if you want to.But be prepared for some comments.
Very few people get it right anyway.even celebrities.

Wilygran. I have the answer regarding TV presenters for you. My DIL is a BBC news director, saw her today and asked the question. BBC news presenters do have a dress guideline -- anything they wear should be available to buy from High Street or similar outlets.
So if you can't find an outfit, email them to find out where tey bought it. But note, this only applies to BBC News presenters, can't comment on others.

This summer there seem to be so many large young women wearing black leggings - apparently under the impression that they are slimming. They would look so much better in palazzo pants or linen trousers, and be much cooler too I would have thought.

I just wear what I like, bearing in mind that my legs won't stand exposure and I have no waist! Most of my clothes aren't very different from DD's, except that she can wear shorter skirts and tighter trousers.

Feeling slightly nauseous at the image Jane shock

When its even mildly sunny you see some extremely ill advised clothing choices to put it mildly. Its awful too when the 'taps aff lads' edit goes round and we are subjected to the awful sight of big bare pot bellies and tattoos stretched thin! Eek

I'll be 66 in August and I wear whatever appeals to me - I'm normally a size 10/12 and am 5ft 6" tall. I've never been a 'let it all hang out' sort of person. Very, very importantly - I LOOK IN THE MIRROR - I'm slim, cellulite free - but do have a 'thickening ' of my middle area - so I dress appropriately. When I look at photos of the young, particularly at race events, I laugh out loud!!!!

Dandibelle Sat 16-Jul-16 17:07:35

Too many overweight younguns around with clothes too tight these days.
They need to mind there own business and live and let live.
Can't stand cheeky kids!

DanniRae Sat 16-Jul-16 16:10:50

Yes Anya! In fact I'm off now - Oh No, my husband cooks our meal on saturdays I'll wait until tomorrow or maybe the day after.........

But I'm definitely going, some day.

wilygran Sat 16-Jul-16 15:31:46

I often wonder if female TV presenters are forced to use a special supplier for outlandish clothes. I never see anything remotely similar in the shops!

gettingonabit Sat 16-Jul-16 14:53:53

Yesss! No-one to cook for, or please. Just me! Preferably somewhere by the sea, or London..

It'd be nice to escape the tyrrany of slap, clothes and the scrutiny of strangers. Just for a bit.

Jalima Sat 16-Jul-16 14:45:06

Yes!

as long as I had a chief cook and bottlewasher cum gardener with me too.

Does anyone else feel, just occasionally, that they would like to run away, leave every responsibility behind and just live out their life alone with no one to worry about, somewhere warm?

hapgran Sat 16-Jul-16 13:49:30

I am determined not to fade into the background as I get older, so tend to wear bright colours (which also cheer me up). I would not, however, want to look as if I am trying to be a teenager or even twentysomething so it is always a fine balancing act!

Maggieanne Sat 16-Jul-16 13:07:49

Greyduster, just go back to Primark and buy those trousers! Although I just wish I had someone who could give me sound advice, and, for goodness sake, tell me how big my backside is.

Louizalass Sat 16-Jul-16 13:01:50

I wear skinny jeans but under long-length tunics as I don't have the flat stomach of my youth! I'm nearly 67 and can't believe it. I wear what I like, but don't wear mini skirts because I'd feel daft. I looked great in them up when I was young! I have short hair but only because I've always had short hair.

I refuse to go grey, I get 'blonded' by the hairdresser and, as I'm still working full-time, I can still afford to do so. However, a friend of mine who has white hair, recently had a soft tinge of pink highlights in her hair and she looks wonderful and has had so many compliments.

grammargran Sat 16-Jul-16 12:40:10

If you've got good legs that are marred by varicose veins (I look on mine as medals of honour earned from three pregnancies), then go for leggings, jeggings, opaque black tights, tunics and knee length dresses - works at any age. I've always had short hair and have recently grown it - it's taken over a year mind! - to just below my ears, and the difference is amazing, so much softer and less aging. I think that some older faces need a little 'foliage'. Mine certainly does. I've been lucky(?) in that I've not gone grey - and I'm 77 soon - but it is fading brunette so time for a touch of colour? I'm also lucky in having daughters - need I say more .......

Am 68 and slim. Would pass for a 14 year old from behind!! Wouldn't have long hair unless it was 'luxuriant ', and wouldn't show bare white legs with dresses and skirts. My shorts for the garden in my cool part of GB, but would wear longish ones in a hot country, with tinted legs!

PetitFilou99 Sat 16-Jul-16 12:38:54

Well, if my Dad is anything to go by, at the age of 83 years old, he decided to change from a PC (which he's had since they were invented) to an Apple computer, so you are never too old...!!

I do get the odd request for help now and then and, as I've never possessed an Apple product in my life, I have to go online to find a solution to the problem. But overall, he's been like a wiz-kid with the brand new iOS.

So there is hope for all of us after all...!!

Greyduster Sat 16-Jul-16 12:22:17

I recently found myself in Primark (Don't ask!), passing a rack of skinny, mud coloured trousers, and thought "I'll just try a pair of those, for fun!" I really really liked them, they fitted well and with the right pair of boots, I could see myself wearing them, but...... I suddenly had DDs voice in my head saying "no, mother, really, NO!" So I put them back and came away, but I really should have had the confidence to say, "what the hell" and to have bought them anyway. I am probably past the stage of making extreme sartorial gestures now!

Zena510 Sat 16-Jul-16 11:58:55

I think we should do what we feel comfortable doing and wearing.
I have subtle tattoos / have blonde highlights / use make up/ dress in what makes ME feel comfortable.
Seems young people dress as they want albeit sometimes outrageously.
Whatever rings your bell or floats your boat ! Who am I to criticise someone ☺️
